If your dog has bitten someone or is threatening to bite, first prevent another incident: create distance and confine the dog somewhere secure if you can do so safely. Get medical advice for anyone bitten, contact your veterinarian promptly, and follow local reporting requirements. Aggressive biting has different possible causes, so do not treat it as a problem that can be solved with punishment or one obedience command.

What should I do if my dog bites someone?

  1. Separate and confine the dog. Move people away and place the dog in a secure separate space only if you can do so without putting anyone at risk. Do not punish, corner, grab, or force contact with an agitated dog. If you cannot safely separate people, get away and contact local emergency or animal-control services.
  2. Check the injured person. Wash the wound with soap and water, then seek professional medical advice. A clinician should assess the injury, infection risk, and whether rabies-related care is needed. Call emergency services if the injury needs an immediate response.
  3. Share information and follow local rules. Provide the dog’s owner contact details and most recent rabies-vaccination information as appropriate, and follow local bite-reporting requirements. Reporting and animal-observation procedures vary by location; ask local animal-control or public-health authorities what applies.
  4. Contact the dog’s veterinarian. Explain what happened and disclose the complete bite history before arranging a visit. Ask how to bring or handle the dog safely.

If another person’s dog bit you, seek medical advice and give animal-control authorities identifying and location information about the dog when appropriate. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s bite-prevention material offers general guidance; medical care and local procedures depend on the situation.

How to prevent another bite while arranging help

  • Keep the dog away from people, animals, objects, and situations that have preceded biting. Use closed doors or other secure separation rather than relying on verbal control.
  • Never leave a child alone with a dog, including a familiar family pet. Do not ask children to manage, approach, feed, or separate the dog.
  • Teach household members to give the dog space when it turns away, stiffens, growls, or moves out of reach. Stop the interaction and increase distance; do not confront or punish a growling dog.
  • Do not force greetings or deliberately recreate a trigger to test the dog’s response.

The AVMA notes that pain or illness can increase the likelihood of a bite and recommends veterinary care. A veterinarian can assess possible health contributors and help coordinate next steps; an article cannot determine why an individual dog bit.

Why a veterinary and behavior assessment matters

Biting may be associated with discomfort, fear, illness, or other circumstances. The same outward behavior can have different causes, and the available information does not diagnose a particular dog. Contact your veterinarian promptly and describe the events, any known triggers, and the dog’s health or behavior changes.

For longer-term help, work with a veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional who uses reward-based methods. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) says its Humane Dog Training Position Statement remains its current authoritative position and recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems. It advises against aversive methods such as electronic, prong, or choke collars, leash corrections, and physical or psychological punishment.

Is a muzzle a solution?

A muzzle may be considered as one part of a safety plan, but it does not resolve the cause of biting or make every interaction safe. Ask a veterinarian or behavior professional for guidance on whether a muzzle is appropriate, how to choose and fit one, and how to introduce it gradually with rewards. A suitable muzzle should prevent biting without injuring the dog or interfering with vision or breathing. Supervise the dog whenever it is muzzled; do not leave it unattended.

Should I punish my dog for growling?

No. Stop the interaction and create distance. Growling, stiffening, turning away, or moving out of reach can signal discomfort; punishing the dog does not address possible pain, fear, or illness.

Does a muzzle make my dog safe?

No. A muzzle is conditional risk management, not a cure or a guarantee of safety. Get professional advice about suitability, fit, and gradual reward-based conditioning, and continue to maintain distance and supervision.
