Choose based on the individual cat’s likely fit with your household—not on pedigree or adoption status alone. A kitten usually needs more supervision, while a healthy adult’s personality is more established and may be easier to assess. Breed can offer clues about appearance and broad tendencies, but it cannot guarantee temperament; either route requires careful attention to health, welfare, and the cat’s history.

Compare the choices that matter in daily life

Decision Pedigree kitten Shelter cat
Age and care A kitten is generally energetic and needs more supervision and care than a healthy adult. [Cats Protection] Shelters may have kittens or adults. Healthy adults usually need less intensive care than kittens or juveniles; ask about the individual cat. [Cats Protection]
Personality Breed may suggest broad tendencies, but temperament varies between cats and is also shaped by early socialisation and experience. [Cats Protection] An adult’s personality is more established and may be easier to evaluate. Shelter observations help, but behavior can change as a cat settles into a new home. [Cats Protection]
Health information Research health conditions associated with the breed and request relevant parental screening evidence and written records. A pedigree certificate is not a health guarantee. [Cats Protection] Ask what is known about the cat’s medical history and care. Records or history may be incomplete; arrange a veterinary visit after adoption. [CDC]
When it may suit you You have a well-researched reason for a particular breed’s characteristics and can verify the breeder’s practices and health screening. You are open to an individual cat’s traits and willing to consider adults as well as kittens.

Start with your household, not the source

Before contacting a breeder or shelter, consider how much time you can give to supervision and play, the activity level that fits your home, and whether children or other animals will share the space. Decide whether you specifically want kittenhood or would welcome an adult cat. The CDC advises matching a cat’s personality and activity level to the family, other household animals, and the time available. [CDC]

What breed can—and cannot—tell you

A pedigree may make appearance and size more predictable, and can offer clues about broad behavioral tendencies. It cannot tell you exactly how an individual cat will behave. Genetics are only part of personality; early socialisation and individual experience matter too. Cats Protection notes the importance of socialisation before seven weeks. [Cats Protection]

An adult shelter cat gives you a chance to ask about observed behavior and see whether the cat’s current needs seem compatible with your home. Treat that information as useful evidence, not a promise: moving and settling in can change how a cat acts.

Take breed-related health and welfare risks seriously

Some pedigree populations have smaller gene pools, which can make particular inherited conditions more likely. Certain physical traits can also harm welfare. Research the specific breed and ask which health tests apply; registration or a breed label alone does not establish that a cat is healthy. [Cats Protection]

For example, Cats Protection describes the Scottish Fold’s folded ears as a cartilage abnormality associated with painful joint disease. Flattened faces, abnormal ears, and lack of fur are other appearance traits that may bring health or welfare problems. Consider the consequences of a trait, not just how distinctive it looks. [Cats Protection]

If you decide to get a pedigree kitten

Check the seller and the kitten directly, rather than relying on an online listing or a claim of pedigree. Ask for evidence of association membership or registration, pedigree documentation, relevant parental health testing, and the kitten’s health and rearing records. Find out how the kitten has been raised and what veterinary care has been provided.

UK Government guidance recommends checking that sellers are responsible and warns that advertising can mislead buyers about an animal’s history, breed, or pedigree. The guidance is UK-specific; registration requirements and legal rules depend on where you live. [GOV.UK]

If you decide to adopt from a shelter

Ask staff what they know about the cat’s health, history, activity level, comfort with people, and experience around children or other animals. Ask what veterinary records and post-adoption support are included. The shelter’s observations can help you make a match, but they cannot guarantee how a cat will behave in a different home.

Make the decision

  • Choose a kitten only if your household can provide the extra supervision and care that kittenhood requires.
  • Consider an adult if you want to evaluate a more established personality and are open to the individual cat’s needs.
  • Choose a particular breed for a researched reason, while checking its health risks and the breeder’s evidence and practices.
  • Whichever route you take, assess the individual animal and verify the information available about its health and history.
