Dogs may bite when they are scared, in pain, frustrated, startled, threatened, guarding something valuable, or defending territory; the reason depends on the individual dog and situation. Reduce risk by giving dogs space, supervising children around every dog, asking before approaching an unfamiliar dog, and seeking prompt medical and public-health advice after a bite or scratch.

Why dogs bite

People and dogs communicate differently, so a person may miss signs that a dog is uncomfortable. Common situations include fear, pain, frustration, feeling threatened or startled, territorial defense, and guarding food, toys, puppies, or other valued things. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of any individual dog. The World Health Organization’s dog-bite prevention guidance and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s prevention guidance emphasize context and individual behavior.

Any dog can bite, including a familiar or friendly dog. Breed alone cannot determine whether a particular dog will bite; consider the dog’s history and behavior.

Recognize when a dog needs space

Possible signs of fear or discomfort include crouching, lowering the head, lip licking, a tucked tail, flattened ears, yawning, looking away, freezing, or trying to move away. A stiff stance, direct stare, raised fur, bared teeth, growling, lunging, or barking may also signal that a dog needs space. Signals vary between dogs, and a wagging tail does not always mean friendliness. Do not approach or try to interpret a single signal in isolation.

Prevent bites around children and familiar dogs

Never leave a young child alone with a dog, including a family pet. Children are especially vulnerable to dog bites, according to the WHO. Supervise interactions closely and separate the child and dog when an adult cannot actively supervise.

Prevent bites when meeting an unfamiliar dog

Do not approach an unfamiliar dog, even if it seems friendly or healthy. If you want to pet a dog, ask its owner first and let the dog approach rather than reaching out to it. Stop if the dog appears uncomfortable.

If an unfamiliar dog approaches you, the CDC advises these steps. They are general safety guidance, not a guarantee.

  4. If knocked down, curl into a ball and protect your head and neck.

See the CDC’s dog safety guidance.

Responsible dog ownership helps reduce risk

Socialization and keeping a dog on a leash in public can help reduce bite risk. Follow local leash rules; a leash is one safety measure, not a guarantee. Supervise interactions with children and give a dog space when it seems uncomfortable. The CDC, AVMA, and ASPCA offer prevention guidance for dog owners and the public.

What to do after a bite or scratch

  1. Get to safety. Separate the person from the dog without putting yourself at risk.
  2. Wash the wound promptly. Wash with soap and water. If the animal could be rabid, the WHO advises washing immediately for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Seek medical advice. Get prompt care for a deep or serious wound, or if you are concerned about infection, tetanus, or possible rabies exposure. A clinician can assess the wound and consult public-health authorities about rabies prevention.
  4. Report and gather information. Follow local reporting rules, particularly if the dog is unknown, appears sick, or is acting strangely. If possible, identify the owner and obtain the dog’s rabies vaccination information.

The CDC provides U.S. guidance on wound care and reporting. For possible rabies exposure, seek medical advice promptly; the WHO explains that recommendations depend on the exposure and location in its rabies guidance and animal-bites fact sheet.

These figures describe different things: the first concerns medical attention after dog bites, while the second concerns the source of human rabies cases globally.

FAQ

Why would a dog bite someone it knows?

A familiar dog may bite if it is scared, in pain, startled, frustrated, threatened, guarding something, or unable to move away. Familiarity does not remove the need to supervise and respect the dog’s space.

Does a wagging tail mean a dog is friendly?

No. A wagging tail can mean different things in different dogs and situations. Consider the dog’s whole posture and give it space if it seems uncomfortable.

Should I approach a dog that looks friendly?

Do not approach an unfamiliar dog without permission. Ask the owner first, let the dog approach if the owner agrees, and stop if the dog looks uncomfortable.

What should I do after a dog bite or scratch?

Get to safety and wash the wound promptly with soap and water. Seek medical advice for serious wounds or possible rabies exposure, and follow local reporting rules. If rabies exposure is possible, the WHO advises washing for at least 15 minutes and seeking medical attention.
