To verify a cat breeder’s health testing and registration claims, request dated health and genetic records for both the sire and dam, confirm that each report belongs to the named cat and came from its stated source, and check registration paperwork with the registry named on it. These are separate checks: registration records document pedigree under a registry’s rules; they do not certify a cat’s health.
How do I verify a cat breeder’s health testing and registration claims?
Start by asking for the health and genetic records for the sire and dam, not just a verbal assurance that the kittens’ parents were “tested.” TICA’s Pet Buyer’s Guide recommends requesting both parents’ records. For each claimed test, ask for a legible report showing the cat’s name or other identifier, the test performed, the result, the date, and the issuing laboratory or veterinary professional.
Then check two evidence streams independently: the health documents with their issuer, and the kitten’s registration and pedigree with the registry named on its paperwork. For medical findings, ask your veterinarian to interpret what a test establishes and when.
What records should I request for both parents?
Ask the breeder to provide a separate record packet for the sire and dam. A useful report should identify the tested cat and state what was tested; a summary that says only “clear” may not tell you which condition, test method, or date the claim refers to.

- The breed-relevant conditions the breeder screens for and the reason for each screening choice.
Screening recommendations depend on breed and condition; there is no single checklist established here for every cat. Ask a veterinarian familiar with the breed which additional screening is relevant to the parents and kitten.
How can I confirm a report belongs to the named cat?
Compare the animal identifiers on the report with the breeder’s records and the registration documents. A name alone may not be enough to distinguish cats, so check any registration number, microchip number, date, or other identifier available. PawPeds’ health-program instructions illustrate why the tested cat’s identity should be captured in testing documentation.
Ask the breeder how the report can be verified with its issuer. With the breeder’s permission, contact the named laboratory or veterinary clinic and ask whether it can confirm that the document corresponds to that cat and date. A screenshot or breeder summary can help with an initial review, but seek an original report or confirmation from the source before relying on a material claim.

Access may depend on the breeder’s cooperation: TICA notes that individual commercial genetic-test results are private to the submitting owner unless disclosed. If the breeder will not share a report or authorize confirmation, you cannot independently verify that claim from the information provided.
What does a genetic test establish—and what does it not?
A genetic result and a clinical examination answer different questions. For hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), Cornell University’s Feline Health Center says, “Echocardiography is the gold standard for the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats.” Its HCM guidance, updated May 2025, explains that genetic screening may indicate increased risk, but not every cat with a tested mutation develops the disease.
If the breeder claims a parent was checked for HCM, ask whether the evidence is a genetic screen or a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram). For an echocardiogram claim, request the dated imaging report and the examiner’s credentials, then ask your veterinarian or a veterinary cardiologist to explain what the findings establish at that time. A genetic panel is not an echocardiogram report, and one normal test does not guarantee a cat will never develop disease.

How do I check whether the kitten is registered?
Request the kitten’s full registered name, registration number if assigned, breeder or cattery name, litter details, sire and dam identifiers, pedigree, and any registration application or ownership-transfer documents. Check those details through the registry named on the paperwork. A breeder’s membership in, or listing by, a registry does not by itself prove that a particular kitten or litter is registered.
Follow that registry’s own rules rather than assuming all registries use the same process. TICA’s registration guidance specifies a breeder-signed three-generation pedigree for its individual-registration route. CFA has different eligibility and pedigree requirements; consult its registration guidance for the applicable process. Confirm the names, registration numbers, parentage, pedigree, and any claimed breeding rights against the relevant registry’s records or instructions.

Registration or a pedigree shows what was recorded under a registry’s rules; it is not a health certificate and does not establish that a cat is free of disease. CFA also cautions that pedigree-based registration from other associations and descendants cannot guarantee bloodline purity. Keep registry documents as evidence of registration and ancestry, and health reports as evidence of the specific screening performed.

What should I check in the sales contract?
Read the complete written contract before paying. TICA recommends asking about the health guarantee and return policy and having the terms included in a written agreement. Identify the actual scope and duration of coverage, exclusions, deadlines for a veterinary exam or notice, available remedies, and any conditions for returning or rehoming the cat.
These are contract terms, and their legal effect depends on the jurisdiction. If a provision is unclear or consequential, seek advice appropriate to where the sale takes place rather than assuming a breeder’s promise has a particular legal effect.
How to compare two breeders’ documentation
Compare the evidence itself, not the size of a test panel or the confidence of a sales claim. A larger panel is not automatically more useful if it misses the breed-relevant risk or cannot be tied to the cat that was tested.

Quick Recap
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Parent coverage | Separate records for both the sire and dam. |
| Conditions and methods | The conditions screened and the test method used, considered in light of breed-relevant risks. |
| Identity and date | Identifiers that match the named parent, plus the report date. |
| Issuer and provenance | A named laboratory, veterinarian, or specialist and a way to confirm the record at its source. |
| Registration evidence | The registry, pedigree depth, and exact status of the kitten or litter—not merely the breeder’s membership. |
| Sale terms | Written guarantee coverage, deadlines, remedies, and return or rehoming requirements. |
Warning signs that call for more verification
- The breeder says “tested” or “clear” but will not identify the test, date, or result.
- A report does not identify the parent, or its identifiers do not match the breeder’s records.
- A genetic-risk result is presented as proof that a cat has no disease, or as a substitute for a clinical assessment.
- The breeder points to registry membership as proof that the specific kitten or litter is registered.
- Health guarantees or return terms are only verbal, or the written contract does not explain the relevant deadlines and conditions.
