A Rat Terrier is a compact American farm terrier: playful, affectionate, intelligent, and often trainable, though some individuals can be sensitive or stubborn. Most need daily walks, active play, companionship, and mental stimulation, while their strong prey drive makes a leash or secure enclosure important around small animals and wildlife.

The breed’s short coat is low-maintenance, but nails, ears, and teeth still need regular care. Rat Terriers can suit active families, but early socialization, positive training, and careful supervision around children and other animals matter.

Temperament and household fit

Rat Terriers are often affectionate with family, playful, and eager to take part in household activities. Some are reserved with strangers. Their farm-terrier background helps explain why they notice movement, enjoy purposeful activity, and may chase small animals.

Many are patient with children, but every dog and child needs supervision. Introduce dogs carefully and monitor their interactions. Never assume that a friendly dog will be safe with every cat, rabbit, rodent, or other small pet.

Prey drive and containment

Rat Terriers may chase cats, squirrels, and other small animals. Recall training is useful, but it should not be trusted to override a chase instinct. Use a leash or secure enclosure around wildlife, cats, and other vulnerable animals. Secure separation is the prudent choice for pet rodents and similar small animals.

Exercise and enrichment

Most Rat Terriers need daily walks, active play, companionship, and mental stimulation. A useful routine can include sniffing walks, retrieving games, short training sessions, scent or problem-solving activities, and play in a secure area. Rotate activities to keep the dog engaged and give both body and brain a productive outlet.

Agility, obedience, and rally are among the activities that can suit an interested Rat Terrier. Adjust exercise to the dog’s age, health, and individual needs, and consult a veterinarian if a health concern limits activity.

Training and socialization

Rat Terriers can learn quickly and respond well to praise, but a determined dog may test boundaries. Use clear routines, reward-based repetitions, and short, engaging sessions rather than punitive methods. The AKC recommends early socialization and puppy training classes.

  1. Begin positive socialization early, introducing people, everyday settings, sounds, and handling at a pace the puppy can manage.
  2. Use praise and rewards to reinforce the behaviors you want.
  3. Keep sessions short, consistent, and varied to maintain interest.
  4. Practice recall and leash skills, but use a leash or secure enclosure around likely chase triggers.

Grooming and hygiene

The short coat is low-maintenance, but regular grooming still supports comfort and health.

  • Brushing: Brush weekly with a soft brush or hound glove. During seasonal shedding, the AKC recommends a shedding tool or rubber curry brush.
  • Bathing: Bathe about monthly when the dog’s lifestyle requires it.
  • Nails: Check and trim at least monthly as needed.
  • Ears: Inspect weekly for wax and debris.
  • Teeth: Brush daily if possible, using toothpaste made for dogs.

Feeding and weight management

Choose a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage: puppy, adult, or senior. Measure portions, account for treats, monitor body condition, and keep fresh water available. Ask a veterinarian about portions, weight management, or homemade diets rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all feeding amount.

Health and breeder questions

Recommended screening for Rat Terriers includes patella, hip, and cardiac evaluations, plus a Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) DNA test. Ask breeders for documented results and what additional testing they use. Rat Terrier Club of America materials also discuss congenital deafness testing by BAER and genetic-diversity work.

The AKC health guidance advises that conscientious breeders genetically test breeding stock with the aim of reducing health problems. Ask for records and family health history, and discuss any concerns with a veterinarian. The research desk found no independent population-level prevalence statistic for Rat Terrier diseases, so precise prevalence claims are not included here.
