Yes, cats can get rabies. Any mammal—including indoor, vaccinated, stray, and feral cats—can become infected after contact with a rabid animal. In the United States, cats have been the most frequently reported rabid domestic animal since 1990.

Rabies is caused by viruses in the Lyssavirus genus and attacks the central nervous system. Once a cat develops clinical signs, the disease is nearly always fatal. If your cat may have encountered a bat or other wild mammal, or is showing sudden neurological or behavioral changes, keep people and pets away and contact a veterinarian and your local health department immediately.

How do cats get rabies?

Most cats catch rabies through a bite from an infected mammal. The virus is carried primarily in saliva and nervous-system tissue. It can enter through a bite wound, another fresh wound, or the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth. Cats do not have a unique cat-specific rabies strain; they usually become infected from wildlife.

Common wildlife sources include:

  • Bats
  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Foxes
  • Other infected mammals

A cat may encounter a bat inside the house without anyone seeing the contact. For that reason, living indoors does not eliminate rabies risk. In the United States, rabid bats occur in every state except Hawaii.

Rabies is not spread by ordinary petting or by contact with urine, feces, blood, clothing, bedding, or other objects. Being near a suspected rabid animal is not, by itself, an exposure. The concern is infected saliva or nervous tissue contacting broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth.

How long does rabies take to develop in cats?

The incubation period—the time between exposure and symptoms—varies. It can depend on where the cat was bitten, how much virus entered the wound, and how close the wound is to highly innervated tissue. A cat may look healthy for weeks or longer after exposure.

There is no symptom-free waiting period that owners can safely use to rule out rabies after a wildlife encounter. If exposure is possible, call a veterinarian or public-health authority even if your cat appears normal.

Symptoms of rabies in cats

Rabies does not look identical in every cat. Some cats become unusually aggressive, while others become quiet, weak, or paralyzed. Early signs may be vague and can resemble many other illnesses.

Possible early signs Later or severe signs
Sudden personality or behavior change Unprovoked aggression or attacking
Restlessness, nervousness, or withdrawal Difficulty swallowing
Lethargy or fever Excessive salivation or a drooping jaw
Loss of appetite or vomiting Weakness, paralysis, or seizures
Stumbling or poor coordination Coma and death
Unusual vocalization or self-mutilation Disorientation and abnormal reactions to movement or sound

The familiar image of a rabid animal “foaming at the mouth” is not a requirement. Affected cats may have trouble swallowing, causing drooling, but some develop a predominantly paralytic form and become increasingly weak or unable to move.

Signs can progress rapidly once they begin, and animals may die within days. These symptoms do not prove rabies: other neurological diseases can cause similar changes. Only an approved laboratory test can confirm rabies in an animal.

Can a healthy-looking cat spread rabies?

Potentially, yes. Infected cats may have rabies virus in their saliva during illness and several days before obvious symptoms appear. That is why a cat that bites or scratches someone is handled through a public-health observation or testing process rather than judged safe based only on its appearance.

What should you do if a cat bites or scratches someone?

Treat any bite or scratch from a stray, unfamiliar, unvaccinated, or abnormal-acting cat as a potential public-health issue. Take these steps:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wash the wound immediately. Use soap and running water for 15 minutes.
  2. Contact a healthcare professional or local health department promptly. Do not wait for symptoms.
  3. Report the incident to animal control or public health, especially if the cat is stray, cannot be identified, is acting strangely, or has an unknown vaccination history.
  4. Do not try to catch a suspicious cat. Give responders its location and description instead.
  5. Ask for vaccination records if the cat is owned, but do not assume a bite is harmless solely because the cat looks well.

Human rabies post-exposure prophylaxis may include wound care, human rabies immune globulin, and rabies vaccine. Whether it is recommended depends on the type of contact, the cat’s vaccination history, local rabies activity, and whether the cat can be safely observed or tested. A healthcare professional or public-health official should make that decision.

The 10-day observation rule

In the United States, a healthy dog, cat, or ferret that bites or scratches a person is generally confined and observed under public-health supervision for 10 days. This applies even if the animal has been vaccinated, because rare vaccine failures can occur.

The animal should not receive a rabies vaccine during that observation period unless public-health officials direct otherwise, because vaccine reactions could be confused with signs of rabies. Local rules may differ, so follow instructions from animal control, the health department, and the veterinarian.

How is rabies diagnosed in cats?

There is no approved definitive test that can diagnose rabies in a living cat. Confirmatory testing requires laboratory examination of brain tissue after euthanasia. Qualified laboratories designated or approved by public-health authorities perform the testing.

Do not attempt to:

  • Open the cat’s mouth to inspect it
  • Collect saliva or other samples
  • Restrain or transport a suspected rabid cat yourself
  • Give medication by mouth
  • Handle the cat’s saliva with bare hands

Call a veterinarian and the local or state health department for instructions. Professionals can decide how to protect people, isolate the animal, and arrange evaluation or testing.

Is there treatment for rabies in cats?

There is no reliably effective treatment once a cat develops clinical rabies. A cat showing signs consistent with rabies should be isolated from people and animals, and veterinary and public-health authorities should be contacted immediately. CDC guidance calls for immediate euthanasia and testing of animals showing clinical signs consistent with rabies.

Do not wait to see whether the cat improves, and do not attempt to administer a rabies vaccine as a cure. Vaccination can help prevent disease after some exposures; it cannot reliably reverse clinical rabies.

What if your cat was exposed to a rabid animal?

Exposure does not automatically mean that a cat has rabies, but it requires prompt professional assessment. Do not handle the wildlife or examine bite wounds without guidance. Contact your veterinarian and local health department, then provide the cat’s vaccination records and details such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What animal was involved
  • Whether a bite or scratch was seen
  • When and where the contact happened
  • Whether saliva may have entered a wound, eye, nose, or mouth
  • When the cat last received a rabies vaccine

For U.S. cases, CDC veterinary guidance generally distinguishes exposures as follows:

Cat’s vaccination status Typical management after a confirmed exposure
Currently vaccinated Immediate booster, owner supervision, and monitoring for 45 days.
Overdue but previously vaccinated Individual assessment by officials; many cats can receive a booster and be managed similarly to currently vaccinated cats.
Never vaccinated Euthanasia is recommended after a confirmed exposure because no licensed biologic guarantees prevention. If the owner declines, immediate vaccination and strict four-month quarantine in a secure facility may be required.

These are general U.S. recommendations, not a substitute for local instructions. State and local requirements can be stricter or different. Simply being outdoors near a suspected rabid animal does not always establish exposure; public-health officials assess the actual circumstances.

How to prevent rabies in cats

  1. Keep rabies vaccination current. Follow your veterinarian’s schedule and local law. In U.S. guidance, most cats should not receive their first rabies vaccine before 12 weeks of age, and an animal is considered immunized 28 days after its first vaccination. Product schedules vary.
  2. Reduce wildlife contact. Keep cats indoors, use a secure enclosure, or supervise outdoor time.
  3. Respond safely if a bat enters the home. Keep people and pets away from it and contact animal control or public health for advice, particularly if it was in a room with a sleeping person or unattended child.
  4. Do not handle unusual wildlife. Report sick, dead, unusually tame, or aggressive bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, or other mammals to the appropriate local authority.
  5. Keep vaccination records accessible. A current certificate can affect the options available after an exposure or bite.

Common rabies misconceptions

  • “Only outdoor cats get rabies.” False. A bat can enter a home, and an indoor cat may encounter it.
  • “A rabid cat must be aggressive or foaming at the mouth.” False. Quiet behavior, weakness, swallowing difficulty, paralysis, and seizures can also occur.
  • “Vaccination makes rabies impossible.” Vaccines are highly protective, but rare failures occur. An exposed vaccinated cat still needs official assessment.
  • “A live cat can be cleared with a blood test.” False. Definitive animal testing requires postmortem examination of brain tissue.
  • “Petting a rabid cat spreads rabies.” Not by itself. The major risk is infected saliva or nervous tissue entering broken skin or mucous membranes.
  • “A rabies vaccine cures a symptomatic cat.” False. Post-exposure prevention is different from treatment after clinical disease begins.

When to call for emergency help

Contact a veterinarian and public-health officials immediately if your cat has had contact with a bat or wild mammal, has an unexplained bite wound after being outdoors, or develops sudden behavior changes, trouble swallowing, heavy drooling, weakness, seizures, or paralysis. Keep the cat in a separate secure area only if you can do so without risking a bite or contact with saliva. Do not handle a potentially rabid cat yourself.

FAQ

Can an indoor cat get rabies?

Yes. An indoor cat can be exposed if a bat or another infected mammal enters the home. Keeping rabies vaccination current provides important protection.

Can a cat have rabies without acting aggressive?

Yes. Rabies may cause withdrawal, weakness, difficulty swallowing, paralysis, seizures, or other neurological changes without obvious aggression. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the disease.

Can rabies be cured in a cat?

There is no reliably effective treatment once clinical rabies develops. A suspected case must be handled with veterinary and public-health guidance because the disease can spread to people.

What should I do if my cat bites me?

Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then contact a healthcare professional or local health department promptly. Do not decide that rabies is impossible based only on your cat’s appearance; follow the required observation or testing process.

The Bottom Line

Cats can get rabies, usually after contact with infected wildlife, and the disease is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear. Vaccination, limiting wildlife contact, and rapid reporting of bites or possible exposures are the best protections. If rabies is a possibility, do not handle the cat or wait for symptoms—call a veterinarian and your local health department immediately.
