To identify an ant, look at its size, color, waist nodes, trail, food source, and nest location; color alone is not enough. For quick first steps, clean up food and water, wipe trails with soapy water, and seal entry points. If bait is appropriate, choose one labeled for the ant and location, place it where ants forage and children and pets cannot reach it, and allow time for workers to carry it to the nest.

Ant species and prevalence vary by region, so this is a practical set of 10 household examples, not a nationally ranked list. Fast action can reduce activity, but baiting is not an instant cure; persistent infestations, suspected structural damage, or uncertain identifications may call for local Extension or a qualified pest professional.

How to identify an ant

Ants generally have a narrow, pinched waist and elbowed antennae. Useful clues include worker size, color and markings, one or two visible waist nodes, odor, movement, food attraction, and where the nest may be. A hand lens can help with tiny ants. If an identification could affect safety or treatment, ask your local Cooperative Extension service or a qualified identifier.

For more identification help, see the UC IPM household-ant key and University of Maryland Extension’s ant guide.

Ants or termites?

Clue Ant Termite
Waist Narrow and pinched Broad, without a constricted waist
Antennae Elbowed Straight or beadlike
Wings Front pair longer than hind pair Four wings approximately equal in size

Winged insects indoors can be difficult to identify by sight alone. If they are emerging from a wall, ceiling, crawlspace, or structural wood, arrange an inspection rather than assuming they are harmless seasonal insects.

10 common household ant examples

Measurements below are identification clues from UC IPM, not universal measurements for every individual. Similar-looking ants may need magnification or local expertise for confident identification.

Ant Identification clues Where it may nest or feed Control implication
Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) About 1/8 inch; dull brown; one waist node. Outdoors in shallow mounds; often takes sweets and sometimes protein. Use an accepted bait, remove food and water sources, and block entry. Outdoor colonies may be impractical to eliminate entirely.
Carpenter ant (Camponotus species) Large, often 1/4 to 1/2 inch; workers vary in size; black or red and black; one node. Look for trails, damp or decayed wood, and sawdust-like frass. Carpenter ants excavate wood to nest; they do not eat it. Find the nest and correct moisture problems; seek help if damage or a concealed nest is suspected.
Odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) About 1/8 inch; dark brown to shiny black; one node; unpleasant odor when crushed. May nest in shallow outdoor mounds or indoors near wall voids, pipes, or heaters. Clean food sources and use a suitable bait if accepted. Correct moisture and seal entry points.
Velvety tree ant (Liometopum occidentale) About 1/8 to 1/4 inch; dark head, red thorax, velvety dark abdomen. Nests in dead wood such as limbs, stumps, and logs. Inspect nearby dead wood and the structure; ask local Extension for guidance if identification is uncertain.
Pavement ant (Tetramorium caespitum) About 3/16 inch; dark brown to black; two nodes. Often under stones or boards, or in mounds by sidewalks and foundations; eats sweets, proteins, and grease. Follow trails to pavement edges or entry points. A bait must match what the ants accept.
Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis) Tiny, about 1/16 inch; yellow or honey-colored to orange; two nodes. May nest in wall or cabinet voids, behind baseboards, or outdoors in debris. Use careful, species-appropriate baiting. UC IPM warns that insecticide sprays can disperse colonies and make the problem worse.
Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) Workers vary in size; reddish with a darker abdomen; two nodes; may form soil or lawn mounds. Outdoor mounds in areas where the species occurs. Treat as a sting-safety issue. Keep people and pets away and follow local Extension and product-label guidance.
Southern fire ant (Solenopsis xyloni) About 1/8 to 1/4 inch; amber head and thorax, black abdomen, golden hairs; two nodes. Can form small mounds in wood or under rocks. Do not assume advice for another ant species applies; use local identification and treatment guidance.
Thief ant (Solenopsis molesta) Extremely small, about 1/32 inch; yellow to light brown; two nodes. May nest outdoors or in wall and baseboard spaces; may prefer greasy or fatty foods. Try an appropriate bait only if accepted, and confirm the identification when possible.
Acrobat ant Listed by Maryland Extension among ants that can enter homes; this source set does not establish a species-level visual description. May be encountered indoors. For a small or uncertain ant, consult local Extension or a qualified identifier before choosing treatment.

How to get rid of ants fast

“Fast” means taking sensible steps promptly, not expecting a colony to disappear immediately. UC IPM describes ant management as a combination of mechanical, cultural, sanitation, and often chemical measures.

  1. Observe and identify. Follow an ant trail, note whether ants are indoors or outdoors, and inspect likely entry points. Take a clear photograph if identification is uncertain.
  2. Remove attractants. Clean food and drink spills, store food in sealed containers, manage garbage and pet food, and wipe trails with soapy water.
  3. Reduce access and nesting conditions. Seal cracks and crevices, trim vegetation touching the home, fix leaks and clogged gutters, and correct moisture-damaged wood.
  4. If bait is appropriate, match it to the ant and follow the label. Place bait where ants forage and children and pets cannot reach it. Different ants may prefer different bait types. Allow time for workers to carry bait back; University of Maryland Extension says baits can take 24–48 hours or longer, while UC IPM notes that control for some ants may take several weeks.
  5. Escalate if the problem persists or damage is suspected. Contact local Extension for identification or consider an IPM-trained professional for persistent infestations, inaccessible indoor nests, suspected carpenter-ant damage, or fire-ant situations needing regional guidance.

Do not spray over or around a baiting effort without checking product-label and species-specific guidance. In particular, UC IPM warns that sprays can disperse pharaoh ant colonies.

Do ant bait stations work?

Bait stations can help when the ants accept the bait, the product is labeled for the target ant and location, and workers can reach it and carry it back. If ants ignore bait, check whether the bait type, placement, freshness, or competing food may be the issue. Follow the label; do not increase the amount beyond its directions. Refillable ant bait stations are one possible DIY format, but effectiveness varies by species and product.

Raid Ant Killer Baits, For Household Use, Child Resistant, 8 Count
  • Kills ants where they hide for up to 3 months
  • After ants feed on the bait, they return to the colony and transfer the bait to the queen and the others, thereby killing the entire colony
  • Use indoors in corners, along walls and near entry points
  • Child-resistant

Keep bait and pesticides inaccessible to children and pets and away from food-preparation surfaces. Check the current label before use and follow it exactly. For pesticide guidance and local referral links, consult the National Pesticide Information Center’s ant information.

When should I call pest control?

Seek help when ants persist despite careful sanitation and appropriate baiting, when a nest is difficult to reach, when you suspect carpenter-ant damage, or when you need a reliable identification to choose a safe response. For fire ants, get local guidance and keep people and pets away from suspected mounds. An Extension office can often help with identification; an IPM-trained professional can assess difficult or damaging nests.

How do I get rid of ants fast?

Clean up food and water, wipe trails with soapy water, and seal entry points. If bait is appropriate, use a labeled product the ants accept and allow time for workers to carry it to the nest; there is no reliable one-day cure for every colony.

Are these carpenter ants?

Large ants with varying worker sizes, trails, damp wood, or sawdust-like frass can be clues. Carpenter ants excavate wood to nest rather than eating it. Contact a qualified professional if you suspect a concealed nest or structural damage.

Do ant bait stations work?

They can work when the ants accept the bait and workers can carry it back to the nest. Choose a product labeled for the target ant and location, place it safely, and follow the label.
