How to Read a Pet Food Label: Ingredients, Nutrition, and Life-Stage Claims Explained

Start with species and the nutritional adequacy statement, then interpret ingredients, nutrient guarantees, moisture, calories, and feeding directions in context.

Start with the label’s species and nutritional adequacy statement: they tell you whether the food is intended for your dog or cat, for which life stage, and whether it claims to be a complete diet. Then check calories, feeding directions, the guaranteed analysis, and ingredients. Each label section answers a different question—and none, by itself, proves that a food is the right choice for an individual pet.

This guide reflects U.S. FDA and AAFCO guidance. Label requirements and adoption of model rules can vary by jurisdiction.

1. Check the species and nutritional adequacy statement

First make sure the product is intended for your pet’s species. Dogs and cats have different nutrient needs, so a food labeled for one should not be assumed suitable for the other.

Next find the nutritional adequacy statement, often printed in small type on the back or side of the package. It identifies the life stage the food is meant to support, or says that it is for intermittent or supplemental feeding. A treat or supplement is not necessarily a complete diet; some such products are exempt from ordinary adequacy requirements.

IRIS USA Airtight Pet Food Storage Rolling Container, 30 lb Capacity, Black
  • Food Storage for All Pets: Keep dog kibble, cat dry food, bird seed, pellets, and treats fresh and organized in one versatile 33 Quart container that holds approximately 22–26 lbs of most dry kibble, depending on kibble size—not all 30 lb bags will fit
  • Airtight Freshness Protection: Snap‑lock lid and foam-line seal lock out moisture and humidity, preserving flavor and nutrition while keeping storage areas clean and organized
  • Easy to Move, Store & Refill: Comes with attachable wheels, giving you the freedom to roll the bin from your kitchen pantry to feeding station or tuck it away on a shelf when not in use
  • Multiple Sizes & Lid Colors: Choose from a variety of BPA-free airtight bins in different sizes and lid colors for storing daily and specialty feeds, or snacks; Lightweight polypropylene design—flexible, not rigid like hard-sided bins
  • Space-Saving Dimensions: Measuring 16.5" L × 10.8" W × 18.4" H (16.9" H without wheels), it’s compact enough for pantries, laundry rooms, utility shelves, countertops, or cabinets

“Complete” means a food supplies the required nutrients; “balanced” means those nutrients are present in appropriate ratios. A complete-and-balanced claim may be supported by formulation to recognized nutrient profiles or by feeding tests conducted using AAFCO procedures. Look at what the package actually says rather than assuming a front-of-package phrase has the same meaning.

AAFCO provides model standards and procedures, but it does not approve, certify, endorse, or review individual pet foods or company labels. The FDA explains that references to an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding trial using AAFCO procedures provide greater assurance that a complete-and-balanced claim is valid: FDA: “Complete and Balanced” Pet Food.

2. Match the life stage to your pet

AAFCO recognizes growth, adult maintenance, gestation/lactation, and all life stages. Nutrient needs and ratios vary across these stages, so a statement for one stage should not automatically be treated as suitable for every animal. A food labeled for all life stages is intended to meet the requirements for the stages covered by that claim; check its feeding directions for separate amounts where provided.

Life stage is only one part of the decision. A pet’s health condition may call for individualized guidance, especially when considering a therapeutic or medical diet. A label cannot determine whether a particular food is appropriate for your pet’s diagnosis.

3. Read the ingredient list as a formulation description

Ingredients are generally listed individually in descending order of predominance by weight as formulated. That order describes relative ingredient weight, not the finished food’s nutrient ranking. The list does not give each ingredient’s exact quantity, digestibility, or the complete nutrient balance of the food.

As a result, a first-listed ingredient, a named ingredient on the front, or a “with” claim is not enough to judge nutritional adequacy or overall quality. FDA describes ingredient-listing rules and notes that certain collective names may be allowed under regulations: FDA: Animal Food Labeling and Pet Food Claims.

4. Understand the guaranteed analysis

The guaranteed analysis gives selected nutrient guarantees, not a full nutrient profile. Standard guarantees generally list crude protein and crude fat as minimums, and crude fiber and moisture as maximums. Additional guarantees may appear or be required to support particular claims.

“Crude” refers to the analytical method used for the guarantees; it does not mean that an ingredient is crude or low quality. Because protein and fat are minimums while fiber and moisture are maximums, the figures are not exact measurements of every batch or a complete basis for ranking foods.

Compare moisture carefully

Package percentages are typically stated on an as-fed basis, which includes the food’s moisture. Nutrient profiles, by contrast, are expressed on a dry-matter basis. For foods with similar moisture content, as-fed percentages may be compared more directly. When comparing a wet food with a dry food that has substantially less moisture, convert the nutrient percentages to dry matter first.

Dry-matter percentage = nutrient percentage ÷ (100 − moisture percentage) × 100.

For example, use the protein and moisture percentages shown on each package in that formula. The result makes the percentages more comparable by removing water from the calculation; it does not turn the limited guarantees into a complete nutrient profile.

5. Check calories and feeding directions

Look for calorie content, commonly expressed as kilocalories per kilogram and also per familiar unit such as a cup, can, or biscuit. Calories help you compare how much energy a serving provides; the unit matters, so compare like with like when possible.

Feeding directions give suggested amounts for a pet’s weight and life stage. Treat them as a starting point, not a precise prescription: an individual animal’s needs can differ. If the label covers all life stages, it may give separate instructions for growth, gestation/lactation, and maintenance. Adjust feeding with attention to your pet’s condition, and ask your veterinarian for advice when health needs affect the choice.

6. Separate regulated information from marketing

Terms such as “natural,” “human-grade,” or “premium,” and prominent ingredient names, do not replace the nutritional adequacy statement. Some nutrient or health claims require supporting guarantees or substantiation. Read the full package and distinguish a claim about intended nutritional use from promotional wording.

In the United States, FDA describes federal requirements covering product identity, net quantity, manufacturer or distributor identification, and ingredient listing. Many additional labeling requirements are based on AAFCO model regulations adopted into state law; the model regulations themselves are not official regulations, and adoption depends on jurisdiction. For details, see FDA: Pet Food and AAFCO: Labeling & Labeling Requirements.

7. Compare two foods in a useful order

  1. Species and life stage: Confirm that each food is intended for your pet’s species and relevant stage, including growth or reproduction when applicable.
  2. Adequacy and intended use: Read whether the food claims complete-and-balanced status, how that claim is substantiated, or whether the product is for supplemental or intermittent use. Do not interpret an AAFCO reference as individual product approval.
  3. Nutrients on a comparable basis: Note which guaranteed values are minimums or maximums. If moisture differs substantially, compare dry-matter values rather than as-fed percentages.
  4. Calories and portions: Compare calories using a common serving unit, then read the feeding directions for the relevant life stage.
  5. Ingredients and claims: Use ingredient order to understand formulation weight, not as a standalone quality score. Check what the package’s claims actually establish.

AAFCO’s consumer guidance covers these label elements and how to read them: AAFCO: Reading Labels. Its guidance on choosing a food also emphasizes species, life stage, health condition, and feeding directions: AAFCO: Selecting the Right Pet Food.
