As of October 7, 2026, you cannot view Punch at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden: the zoo says its Monkey Mountain viewing area is closed through October 18 for construction, with a possible extension. Check the zoo’s website and official X account before traveling; the zoo does not promise a reopening date. When viewing resumes, Punch may be mingling with the troop and hard to pick out—not posing with the plush orangutan from his viral videos.

The zoo is in Ichikawa, Chiba, east of central Tokyo. You can still consider visiting other parts of the zoo during the closure, but confirm what is open that day. Even after Monkey Mountain reopens, a Punch sighting or particular behavior is never guaranteed.

Can you visit Punch now?

Not at Monkey Mountain as of the research check on October 7, 2026. The zoo’s official closure notice says the viewing area cannot be viewed through October 18 while shade and other environmental improvements are installed. The work may be extended, including because of typhoons. Do not assume it will reopen October 19; check for an update immediately before your trip.

The closure applies to viewing Monkey Mountain, not necessarily every area or facility at the zoo. Check the official zoo website for current operating information. The zoo says updates will also appear on its official X account.

Where can I see Punch the monkey in Japan?

Punch is a Japanese macaque at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Ichikawa, Chiba—not at Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano. His exhibit is サル山 (saru-yama, “Monkey Mountain”), a managed zoo enclosure where visitors watch the troop from a viewing area.

Address: 284-1 Omachi, Ichikawa, Chiba 272-0801. For Japanese map searches, use 市川市動植物園 or the address. The zoo’s official access page has route details.

What to expect from Punch now

Punch was born on July 26, 2025. The Associated Press reported that his mother did not raise him, so keepers cared for him. They gave him a stuffed orangutan toy to help develop clinging ability, which young macaques need. Images of Punch with the toy spread online after he was introduced to the monkey enclosure.

His situation has changed since those viral clips. AP reported in March 2026 that Punch was using the plush less and interacting with other macaques. Its July report said he was mingling and playing with the group and had become difficult to distinguish from them. That is the best guide to what visitors should expect after viewing resumes: look for a young macaque among the troop, not necessarily a solitary baby holding an orange toy.

Keepers’ priority is Punch’s safe integration into macaque society. As keeper Kosuke Kano put it in AP’s March report: “Helping Punch learn the rules of monkey society and being accepted as a member is our most important task.” The toy is part of his story, but it is not a guaranteed feature of a visit.

How to get to Ichikawa City Zoo from Tokyo

Ichikawa is a Tokyo-area side trip, not a central-Tokyo attraction. Public-transport options and timetables vary by day, and the last leg may involve a bus, taxi, or a walk of about 30 minutes. Check the zoo’s access page and current transit timetables before setting out.

Option What the zoo’s access information says What to check
JR Ichikawa-Ono Station Bus or taxi options are listed; walking takes about 30 minutes. Current bus service and taxi availability.
Hokuso Railway Omachi Station A walk of more than 30 minutes via the nature observation garden. Whether the walk suits your group and the day’s conditions.
Motoyawata Station Direct Keisei Bus service is listed for weekends and holidays; community-bus options differ by day. Current routes, operating days, and timetables.
Car A private car park beside the entrance is listed with 240 spaces. The access page lists ¥500 per ordinary car per day and ¥2,000 per bus per day. Availability and details with the listed parking operator.

These details are from the zoo’s official access page. Timetables, parking availability, and prices can change, so verify them close to your visit.

As of October 7, the zoo says Monkey Mountain cannot be viewed through October 18, 2026, due to environmental improvement work, with a possible extension. This is separate from the zoo’s regular closing days. Check the closure notice for the latest status.

Will you be able to see Punch after the closure?

There is no published Punch viewing schedule or guaranteed appearance. Once Monkey Mountain viewing is available, Punch may be hidden, resting, moving among macaques, or difficult to distinguish from them. AP’s July 2026 report says he was mingling and playing with the group, so the plush is no longer a dependable way to identify him.

  1. Check the zoo website and official X for closure and operating updates before traveling.
  2. Confirm that Monkey Mountain is open on your chosen date.
  3. When viewing is available, look for a young macaque among the troop rather than only for the stuffed toy.
  4. Observe quietly and patiently; if Punch is not visible, visit another area and return later if time permits.
  5. Do not ask keepers to produce Punch or change the animals’ routine for a photo.

Arriving early may help you avoid some crowds, but it cannot guarantee a sighting. Treat the visit as an opportunity to observe macaques, not as a scheduled celebrity appearance.

Rules for viewing Punch ethically

Follow the zoo’s current visitor instructions and keep a respectful distance. Do not cross barriers, disturb the animals, or interrupt keepers. The zoo’s guidance includes a 10-minute limit for front-row viewing, and prohibits livestreaming and photographic aids such as tripods and selfie sticks. Ordinary photography is not a blanket ban in the guidance, but it must be brief and unobtrusive; instructions can change during busy periods.

Never enter the enclosure for a photograph or closer look. The Straits Times reported that two U.S. nationals who entered the enclosure were fined ¥300,000 each. An intrusion can frighten the troop and put animals and people at risk.

Can you bring Punch a gift?

No. The zoo says it does not accept physical gifts or food for Punch or other animals. Its official donation guidance explains how to support the zoo. The supporter guide is valid through December 31, 2026, according to the zoo’s October 1 update; use the official process and follow its payment rules.

Use official information, not viral accounts

Use the zoo’s main website and Punch-statement index for announcements and guidance. The zoo says it has no official Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok account; its official social presence among those platforms is X, listed as @ichikawa_zoo. Viral clips can be old or lack context, so check their dates before treating them as current.

Is a trip to see Punch worth it?

During the current closure, a trip specifically to view Punch is not a good plan: Monkey Mountain is closed through October 18 according to the zoo’s notice, with a possible extension. After viewing resumes, it may be worthwhile as a flexible zoo visit if you accept that Punch may be hidden or hard to identify.

It is a poor choice as a trip built around a guaranteed photo, a close encounter, or seeing him with the plush toy. Keep his welfare and normal social development ahead of a viral-video reenactment.
