Stripes, swirls, spots, warm ginger tones, cool silver coats, and a wonderfully expressive forehead “M” give tabby cats plenty of naming inspiration. This curated list contains exactly 167 distinct tabby cat names, from familiar choices such as Tiger and Ginger to more unusual ideas such as Herringbone, Tansy, Wonton, and Whorls.

One important clarification before you browse: tabby describes a coat pattern, not a breed. A tabby may be a domestic shorthair, domestic longhair, or a member of many different pedigreed breeds. Choose a name based on appearance, personality, or simply the one that feels right—not on assumptions about breed or temperament.

How to choose one name from 167

  1. Watch your cat for a few days. Notice whether the cat is bold, shy, noisy, cuddly, athletic, or fascinated by everything. Appearance can change as a kitten grows, while personality often gives you a name with staying power.
  2. Make a shortlist of five. Include at least one color or pattern choice, one personality choice, and one name you simply enjoy saying.
  3. Say each name aloud. Try it in the voice you would use at feeding time, during play, and when you need the cat to come indoors. A name that looks appealing on a screen may feel awkward in daily conversation.
  4. Check for household confusion. Avoid names that sound too much like another pet’s name, a family member’s name, or a routine cue. Pairs such as Milo and Miko or Billy and Millie can be difficult to distinguish quickly. Names that resemble commands such as no, sit, or stay may also be less convenient.
  5. Consider the adult version of the cat. A kitten-only joke may not feel right later. If you love an elaborate name, give it a short everyday form, as with Purrlock Holmes and Purrlock.
  6. Think about public use. You may need to say the name at a veterinary clinic, boarding facility, shelter, or near an open door. Choose something you are comfortable pronouncing and hearing in those settings.
  7. For an adult rescue, change the name thoughtfully. If the cat already responds to a name, a similar-sounding replacement may be easier than an entirely unrelated word. Guidance from VCA recommends observing a new pet, choosing a name that is easy to say, avoiding confusing sounds, and considering a similar-sounding name when renaming an animal. Pair the new name with positive experiences as you use it consistently.

Do cats learn their names?

Research suggests that domestic cats can distinguish their own names from other words. In the 2019 study, however, a response often meant an ear or head movement rather than walking over, vocalizing, or obeying. A cat that looks away may still have recognized the word; recognition is not the same as compliance. Read the published study or its accessible full text for the research details.

Build the name’s meaning with positive experiences. Say it once in a pleasant, consistent tone, then offer food, play, affection, or another reward when the cat looks toward you or comes closer. VCA’s cat-training guidance explains how food and treats can support learned behavior, while its reinforcement guidance covers rewards and consistent cues. Do not turn the name into a repeated scolding signal.

What kind of tabby is your cat?

Tabby is a pattern category rather than a breed. The Cat Fanciers’ Association describes four basic tabby pattern labels, although terminology can vary between registries and breed standards. You do not need show-cat precision to choose a name; an everyday visual description is enough.

  • Mackerel tabby: Narrow vertical stripes run down the body, often creating the classic tiger-like look. Mackerel is also a particularly good name from this list.
  • Classic or blotched tabby: The body has broad swirls, often with a circular or bullseye-like marking on the sides. Try Paisley, Maze, Ripple, Swirl, Marbles, or Mosaic.
  • Spotted tabby: Stripes may break into spots or appear as distinct dots. Dapple, Speckles, Spot, Buttons, Domino, and Rorschach are natural fits.
  • Ticked tabby: Individual hairs are banded, so the body may look more finely textured and less obviously striped. Ash, Pepper, Sage, or Pebble can work well. Terminology is not completely uniform: TICA explains that ticking can be understood as an effect over an underlying tabby pattern, while CFA includes ticked among its general pattern labels.
  • Rosetted or marbled variations: Some cats have more specialized markings, especially within particular breed contexts. CFA’s tabby explainer also discusses rosetted and marbled variations.
  • Patched tabby or torbie: A cat may combine tabby markings with red or cream patches. The term torbie is commonly used for a tortoiseshell-tabby combination, but registry terminology can differ.

Many tabbies have a characteristic forehead “M,” along with markings on the face, legs, belly, spine, and tail. It may be faint, partly hidden by fur, or difficult to see, so an obvious M is not a requirement for a cat to inspire an M-related name.

Color terminology can be just as variable. Formal descriptions may use terms such as red, cream, blue, silver, and brown, while owners commonly say orange, ginger, gray, or grey. UC Davis notes that feline coat-color classification can be confusing because registries and associations may use different terms for similar appearances.

Two tabby myths worth skipping

Are all orange tabbies male?

No. Orange cats are more often male because the orange-color allele is X-linked, but female cats can also be orange. UC Davis explains the genetics of the X-linked orange allele. Coat color also does not establish personality: an orange cat is not automatically goofy, friendly, unintelligent, or any other particular way.

Does every tabby have a visible M?

The forehead M is characteristic of tabby markings, but it may be subtle or obscured by the cat’s coloring and fur. Use it as inspiration if you can see it, not as a test your cat must pass.

A note on the word tabby

The word tabby originally referred to a patterned silk fabric associated with al-ʿAttābiyya, a district of Baghdad, and later came to describe cats with striped or mottled coats. Merriam-Webster’s entry traces this textile connection. It is a description of appearance, which is why tabby cats can belong to many breeds or to no recognized breed at all.

Why exactly 167 names?

167 is a deliberate curation count, not a ranking and not a claim that these are the world’s most popular tabby names. Published name lists use very different totals—for example, 93, 175, 200-plus, and 235—so the useful distinction here is transparency: the numbered directory above contains 167 unique names, with no repeated name counted under multiple categories. For comparison, see the current collections from Great Pet Care, Cats.com, Rover, and Catster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tabby a cat breed?

No. Tabby describes a coat pattern, not a breed. Tabby cats may be domestic shorthairs, domestic longhairs, or members of many pedigreed breeds.

What is the difference between a mackerel and classic tabby?

A mackerel tabby usually has narrow vertical stripes, creating a tiger-like appearance. A classic, or blotched, tabby has broader swirls and often a bullseye-like marking on each side.

Are all orange tabby cats male?

No. Orange cats are more often male because the orange-color allele is X-linked, but female orange cats are possible. Coat color does not determine personality.

What is a gray tabby called?

Everyday owners commonly say gray or grey tabby. Formal descriptions may use terms such as blue or silver depending on the coat and registry, but there is no requirement to use a specialized label when choosing a name.

Do tabby cats always have an M on their forehead?

The forehead M is a characteristic tabby marking, but it can be faint or difficult to see. It is inspiration, not a requirement for identifying or naming a tabby.

Can I rename an adult rescue cat?

Yes. A similar-sounding replacement may be easier if the cat already knows its old name. Use the new name consistently with food, play, affection, and other positive experiences.

Should I choose a short name for my tabby?

Short names are often easier for people to say consistently, but one or two syllables are not a strict rule. If you choose a long name, an everyday nickname can make it more practical.

What if my cat ignores its name?

Ignoring you does not prove the cat failed to learn the name. Research suggests cats can distinguish their names from other words, but responses may be as subtle as an ear or head movement. Practice in calm situations and pair the name with positive reinforcement.

Are tabby and torbie the same thing?

Not exactly. Tabby describes the patterned markings. Torbie is commonly used for a tortoiseshell-tabby combination, in which tabby markings appear alongside red or cream patches. Registry terminology can vary.

The Bottom Line

Choose the tabby name you can say naturally, that fits the cat’s look or personality, and that will still feel right when a tiny kitten becomes an adult. Whether the final choice is Tiger, Ash, Paisley, Quinn, or Purrlock Holmes, use it consistently and connect it with good experiences.
