Laboratory exposure reproduced disease signs and mortality, but the finding does not prove that one bacterium explains every outbreak or every affected species.
The North Pacific outbreak began at continental scale in 2013 and affected at least 20 sea-star species from Mexico to Alaska. A population analysis estimated that as many as 5.75 billion sunflower sea stars died, but that is an estimate—not a count of carcasses.
What happened to the sea stars?
The North Pacific outbreak of sea-star wasting disease (SSWD) became apparent at continental scale in 2013. Reports came from intertidal areas and underwater habitats along the Pacific coast of North America. Researchers documented the disease in at least 20 species, according to the USGS disease overview.
Affected animals could show several symptoms in quick succession:

- White or discolored lesions on the body surface
- Loss of the normal firm body shape
- Arms twisting, drooping or detaching
- Breakdown of tissue around the lesions
- Rapid decay that gave the wasting process its “melting” description
Some individuals died within days. Because sea stars are slow-growing animals, a sudden regional loss can affect populations for years even after the visible outbreak subsides.
What does “billions” actually mean?
The most dramatic estimate concerns the sunflower sea star, Pycnopodia helianthoides, a large predator that can reach roughly a meter across. An analysis of more than 61,000 population surveys from 31 datasets estimated a 90.6% decline and as many as 5.75 billion deaths, according to the National Science Foundation.
That number is an estimate generated from population data, not a count of individual carcasses found along the coast. The surveys indicate a collapse across a huge geographic range.
The leading culprit is a bacterium
In a 2025 study, researchers found Vibrio pectenicida strain FHCF-3 in high abundance in diseased sunflower sea stars’ coelomic fluid—the fluid surrounding their internal organs and often described as a functional equivalent of blood. The study in Nature Ecology & Evolution reports that researchers cultured FHCF-3 and exposed healthy sunflower sea stars to it under controlled laboratory conditions. The animals developed disease signs and died.
Those experiments support describing FHCF-3 as a causative agent of SSWD in sunflower sea stars. The study tested a particular bacterium, species and disease model; it does not establish that FHCF-3 explains every historical wasting event, every affected sea-star species or every outbreak in a different environment.

Why the old virus theory is no longer the answer
Early investigations implicated a sea-star-associated densovirus. Later research found the virus commonly present in healthy sea stars as well as diseased ones, so its presence did not reliably track illness. The densovirus is an earlier proposed explanation, not the currently established culprit. The newer bacterial evidence is stronger because it includes controlled exposure experiments that reproduced disease signs and mortality in sunflower sea stars.
Did warming cause the die-off?
Warming is not a complete explanation. Marine heat waves and other environmental conditions may affect a sea star’s susceptibility, bacterial growth, transmission or ability to recover. They may also help explain why an outbreak becomes severe in one place or year rather than another.
The 2025 findings identify a bacterial pathogen; they do not show that warming alone caused the die-off. The USGS summary and study describe environmental conditions as potential influences on disease dynamics, not as the demonstrated sole cause.
Why losing sea stars threatens kelp forests
Sunflower sea stars are important predators of purple sea urchins. Urchins eat kelp, and a healthy population of sea stars can help keep that grazing pressure under control.
When sunflower sea stars disappeared, urchin numbers increased in many areas. Dense urchin populations can strip kelp forests, creating “urchin barrens”—seafloor habitats with far less kelp and fewer of the animals that depend on it.

- Safe Resin Construction: Crafted from polyresin that is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums; won ' t water or affect aquatic inhabitants
- Set of Five Unique Pieces: Includes five sea stars in assorted colors and sizes; creates a and engaging display among your aquarium substrate or decorative gravel
- Easy to: Smooth, non-porous surface rinses quickly under running water; color stays bright without fading or peeling over extended use
- Versatile Decor: Ideal for fish tanks, terrariums, and home displays; also perfect for beach-themed gatherings or creative crafting projects
Experiments found that sunflower sea stars consume about 0.68 urchins per day. The researchers concluded that pre-outbreak sea-star densities were generally high enough to help prevent urchin barrens, as reported by the National Science Foundation. The die-off therefore produced a trophic cascade: removing a predator changed its prey’s abundance and put pressure on an entire habitat.
| Change | Likely ecological consequence |
|---|---|
| Sea-star wasting disease reduces sunflower sea stars | Fewer predators remain on the seafloor |
| Urchin populations face less predation | More urchins survive and graze |
| Urchin grazing intensifies | Kelp forests can shrink or disappear |
| Kelp habitat is lost | Species that shelter or feed in kelp may also decline |
Does identifying the bacterium mean the crisis is over?
No. Finding FHCF-3 is an important scientific step, but it is not a field treatment and it does not demonstrate that sunflower sea-star populations have broadly recovered.
The discovery gives researchers tools to develop culture-based tests, look for the bacterium in additional populations, compare strains and investigate whether some sea stars are more resistant than others. It may eventually help conservationists identify animals suitable for breeding or restoration programs.
Several questions remain:
- How does the bacterium enter and spread? The route of infection and conditions that promote transmission need further study.
- Why are some animals or populations more vulnerable? Genetics, age, nutrition, temperature and local water conditions may all matter.
- Does FHCF-3 affect other species in the same way? Evidence from sunflower sea stars should not automatically be generalized to all sea stars.
- What is the disease’s precise pathology? A 2026 “Matters Arising” article argued that a formal microscopic case definition would strengthen the causal claim and noted that pathology remains insufficiently characterized. See the 2026 article.
What pet owners can take from this
Sea-star wasting disease is a wildlife disease, not a disease that ordinary household pets catch from watching an aquarium video or walking on a beach. The practical lesson for animal lovers is broader: wild animals can be affected by pathogens in ways that ripple through an entire habitat.
If you encounter a sick or disintegrating sea star, do not handle it, move it to another tide pool or place it in an aquarium. Photograph the animal, record the location and report the sighting through a regional sea-star monitoring program or local marine science organization. Do not collect wild sea stars, seawater or beach animals for a home aquarium.

The careful version of the verdict
After a decade-long investigation, researchers identified Vibrio pectenicida strain FHCF-3 as a causative agent of sea-star wasting disease in sunflower sea stars. The evidence explains a major part of a die-off estimated to have killed billions of these animals.
It does not mean every detail is solved. The roles of environmental conditions, the disease’s microscopic pathology and the cause of wasting in other sea-star species still require investigation. “Case solved” is fair as a description of a major breakthrough—not as a claim that the entire North Pacific outbreak has been explained.
FAQ
What killed the sea stars?
The strongest current evidence identifies Vibrio pectenicida strain FHCF-3 as a causative agent of sea-star wasting disease in sunflower sea stars. Laboratory exposure reproduced disease signs and mortality. Scientists have not shown that it explains every wasting outbreak or every affected species.
How many sea stars died?
A population analysis estimated that as many as 5.75 billion sunflower sea stars died, representing an estimated 90.6% decline. This is a model-based estimate from more than 61,000 surveys, not a direct count of carcasses, according to the National Science Foundation.

Was the die-off caused by climate change?
Warming and marine heat waves may influence susceptibility, transmission or outbreak severity, but the evidence does not show that warming alone caused the event. The 2025 study identified a bacterial pathogen in diseased sunflower sea stars.
What should I do if I find a sick sea star?
Do not touch, move or collect it. Take a photograph, note the location and report the observation to a regional sea-star monitoring project or local marine science organization. Avoid putting wild sea stars or seawater into a home aquarium.
