Arabian horses are known for athletic ability, endurance and versatility, but no breed description can predict an individual horse’s temperament or suitability for a particular rider. A purebred Arabian is identified by accepted registration records, not appearance alone. For prospective owners, the key is to assess the individual horse’s training, health, intended use and documentation.

Arabian horse at a glance

Topic What the research supports
Breed identity Purebred status is based on entry in a stud book or register accepted by the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO).
General traits WAHO describes the breed in terms of athletic ability, endurance, versatility and good temperament. These are breed-level characterizations, not guarantees about an individual.
Uses Arabians are associated with athletic and endurance ability, and the Arabian Horse Association serves breeding, competitive and recreational interests.
Routine care They need the same essential welfare and veterinary care as other horses; the reviewed sources do not establish a separate routine-care protocol for the breed.
Inherited conditions Four Arabian-associated conditions have had genetic tests available: SCID, cerebellar abiotrophy, Lavender Foal Syndrome and one form of OAAM. Confirm current testing and interpretation with a veterinarian or laboratory.

What is an Arabian horse?

WAHO defines a purebred Arabian as a horse that appears in a purebred Arabian stud book or register accepted by the organization. Registration records—not a dished face, tail carriage or other physical trait—establish whether a horse meets that definition. Check the relevant registry’s records when verifying an individual horse’s identity and status.

WAHO says its definition was agreed in 1974 and is updated or reconfirmed at biennial conferences as required. Registry rules and procedures can change, so buyers should confirm current requirements with the applicable authority.

Temperament and suitability

WAHO describes Arabians as having good temperament, athletic ability, endurance and versatility. That is an organizational characterization, not a measured ranking or a promise that every Arabian will be calm, easy to ride or suitable for a beginner.

#1 Best Overall

A horse’s behavior is shaped by its breeding, handling, training, health and circumstances. When assessing a prospective horse, consider its actual behavior and training history, your experience and the activity you have in mind. The reviewed research does not provide a standardized comparison of Arabian temperament with other breeds or establish that the breed is suitable for every novice.

Uses

WAHO highlights the breed’s versatility, athletic ability and endurance. The Arabian Horse Association describes serving breeding, competitive and recreational interests. These descriptions support a broad account of the breed’s uses, but they do not establish that Arabians are superior in a particular sport or that every individual is suited to every discipline.

Choose a horse based on its individual training, health, conformation and soundness as assessed by qualified professionals, along with the demands of the intended activity. Pedigree and breed reputation cannot replace that evaluation.

Care and health

The reviewed veterinary guidance is general to equids rather than unique to Arabians. AAEP welfare principles call for appropriate food, water, handling, health care and an environment suited to the animal and its use. Work with a veterinarian to determine care for the individual horse and its region.

  • Provide suitable food, clean water, appropriate shelter and handling, and an environment that supports the horse’s welfare.
  • Ask the attending veterinarian to recommend core and risk-based vaccinations for the horse and region.
  • Arrange dental assessment and seek veterinary advice about persistent changes in eating, behavior or comfort; dental discomfort can affect feeding and digestion.

Arabian-associated inherited conditions

WAHO’s September 2020 overview identified four conditions for which genetic tests were available at that time. The information is dated: confirm current test availability, interpretation and any applicable registry requirements with a veterinarian, recognized laboratory or registry.

Condition What owners and breeders should know
Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) WAHO describes this as an autosomal recessive condition. A horse with one copy is a carrier; breeding decisions should consider the status of both prospective parents.
Cerebellar abiotrophy (CA) WAHO identifies this as an Arabian-associated condition with a genetic test available when its overview was written. Confirm the current test and its interpretation with a veterinarian or laboratory.
Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS) WAHO describes this as an autosomal recessive condition. Request relevant records and discuss mating implications with a veterinarian or recognized laboratory.
Occipital atlanto-axial malformation (OAAM) WAHO’s overview refers to one tested form. A result should be interpreted in light of the particular test and its scope.

For the conditions described as recessive, WAHO says a horse with one mutation copy is a carrier and does not show clinical signs from that carrier status; an affected foal requires two copies. A carrier result is not itself a diagnosis of illness. Request actual test records rather than relying on a verbal assurance, and confirm what a result does and does not establish.

How to evaluate an Arabian horse

  1. Define your intended use. Be specific about the activity and the level of work you expect.
  2. Assess the individual horse. Consider its observed behavior, training history, health and suitability for your experience and plans.
  3. Verify documentation. Check registration and pedigree records with the relevant authority, and request any relevant genetic-test records.
  4. Consult qualified professionals. Have a veterinarian assess the horse in light of its history and intended use; seek appropriate professional advice about soundness and conformation.
  5. Plan for ongoing care. Discuss welfare, routine veterinary care, vaccination and dental needs with the attending veterinarian.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Arabian horses good for beginners?

Some individual Arabians may suit a beginner, but the research does not establish breed-wide beginner suitability. Consider the specific horse’s behavior and training, your experience, and the instruction and support available to you.

What is an Arabian horse’s temperament?

WAHO characterizes the breed as having good temperament, athletic ability, endurance and versatility. This is not a guarantee about an individual horse; behavior depends on the horse and its handling, training, health and circumstances.

What are Arabian horses used for?

WAHO describes the breed as versatile, and the Arabian Horse Association serves breeding, competitive and recreational interests. Suitability for a particular activity depends on the individual horse and the demands of that activity.

Do Arabian horses have special health problems?

WAHO’s September 2020 overview identified SCID, cerebellar abiotrophy, Lavender Foal Syndrome and one form of OAAM as conditions with genetic tests available at that time. This does not mean every Arabian is affected. Confirm current testing details with a veterinarian or recognized laboratory.

How do you care for an Arabian horse?

The reviewed sources do not establish a breed-specific routine-care schedule. Follow general equine welfare guidance and ask a veterinarian to tailor health care, vaccinations and dental assessment to the individual horse.

How can I confirm that a horse is a purebred Arabian?

Check whether the horse appears in a stud book or register accepted by WAHO, and verify its records with the relevant national registry. Appearance alone does not establish purebred status.
