There is no reliable measured weight limit that applies to every hawk, and the sources reviewed here do not establish a controlled maximum payload for hawks in sustained flight. A hawk may capture or kill prey it cannot carry away: red-tailed hawks, for example, take black-tailed jackrabbits that can weigh up to six pounds, but may feed on heavy prey on the ground. Most ordinary dogs and cats are unlikely to be carried away by a common hawk, though very small pets can still be attacked or injured.
What does “carry” mean?
Grabbing or killing prey is different from lifting it off the ground and flying away with it. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission explains that hawks may stay on the ground to eat prey or roadkill that is too heavy to carry. A sighting of a hawk with a large animal therefore does not show that the bird can transport the whole animal in flight.
- Attack or capture: The hawk strikes or grips an animal; the animal may remain on the ground.
- Feed at the site: The hawk eats prey where it was caught, including prey too heavy to carry.
- Carry away: The hawk lifts the prey and transports it through the air. The sources reviewed here do not provide a controlled maximum weight for this ability across hawks.
What the available weight figures do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Up to six pounds | Cornell Lab of Ornithology says black-tailed jackrabbits taken by western red-tailed hawks can reach this weight. | A red-tailed hawk’s ability to fly away with a six-pound rabbit. |
| Just over three pounds | Cornell’s stated upper body weight for red-tailed hawks in its comparison. | A measured carrying limit. |
| About three pounds | North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s description of the largest hawks in North Carolina. | A weight that applies to every hawk species or region. |
| Under two pounds | HawkWatch International’s generalization about most North American raptors’ body weight. | A measured payload or universal rule. |
| Under 10 pounds | A U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2017 precaution advising against leaving small pets of this size exposed outside. | A biological maximum that hawks can carry. |
These figures refer to prey weight, bird body weight, or a safety precaution—not a controlled payload test. HawkWatch International offers a broad rule of thumb that raptors generally cannot carry prey larger than their body weight, but that should not be treated as a universal law or measured limit. Cornell’s jackrabbit example is about prey taken, not proof of airborne transport.
Could a hawk carry away my pet?
Most ordinary household dogs and cats are not realistic candidates for being carried away by a common hawk. The risk is not zero for very small animals: wildlife guidance notes that a hawk may rarely target a small dog or cat, and an attack can injure an animal even if the hawk cannot fly off with it.

How to protect small pets and poultry
- Supervise small pets outdoors. Keep them close and leashed where practical, especially in areas where raptors are present.
- Use a roofed enclosure. Cornell recommends a roofed kennel for a small dog kept outdoors and a catio for an outdoor cat.
- Cover poultry runs. North Carolina Wildlife recommends overhead protection such as poultry netting, chicken tractors, or covered runs for chickens.
- Do not rely on a weight cutoff. An enclosure reduces exposure but is not a guarantee against every hazard.
- Do not harm or harass hawks. Native hawks are protected under federal and state law in North Carolina; check the rules and permits that apply in your jurisdiction.
If you find a hawk on the ground
A grounded hawk is not automatically injured. It may be feeding on prey, or a young bird may be fledging. UC Davis lists possible signs of injury or illness such as lethargy, inability to stand, balance problems, a wing that cannot fold or function, or visible blood.
