If the filled bag will go in ordinary trash, do not assume that a compostability claim means it will break down in landfill conditions. A certification or standard describes performance under defined composting conditions; local acceptance is a separate question.
How to choose
- Check the destination. Ask your municipality, hauler, or receiving facility whether it accepts bagged dog waste.
- Check the bag separately. If pet waste is accepted, ask whether compostable bags are accepted and whether particular products or certifications are required.
- Check the exact product claim. Look for the finished bag’s certification and scope, not just a general claim about a material or brand.
- Compare fit and format. Use stated dimensions, roll count, handle style, dispenser compatibility, and thickness to assess whether the bag suits your needs.
- Do not treat specifications as performance tests. Dimensions and thickness do not prove leak, puncture, or cold-weather performance.
What compostability standards tell you
ASTM D6400 concerns plastics designed for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities. It is not a general claim that a bag will break down in a landfill or in every home compost pile. ASTM D6868 covers end items that incorporate plastics or polymers as coatings or additives with paper and other substrates for aerobic composting; it is distinct from ASTM D6400.
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s 2025 technical report on compostable materials summarizes ASTM D6400 criteria as no more than 10% of original dry weight remaining after sieving through a 2.0 mm sieve after 84 days, and 90% of organic carbon converting to carbon dioxide within 180 days under specified test conditions. These are standard criteria, not a claim that every product listed below was independently tested in this research, and not landfill timelines.

Certification and local acceptance are different checks. A facility may accept dog waste but reject bags, or reject pet waste altogether. Follow the rules of the actual program and receiving facility.

What this research does—and does not—show
The research supports comparing manufacturer-stated dimensions, thickness, roll format, handle style, and certification claims. It does not establish a tested winner or independently verify the named products’ certification status for each SKU. No comparative testing of opening, leaks, punctures, cold-weather handling, or value was established.

This research does not establish a tested best bag. Check local acceptance first, then compare product-page specifications and verify certification claims for the exact product.

Will a compostable dog-poop bag break down in a landfill?
Do not assume so. ASTM D6400 concerns plastics designed for aerobic composting in municipal or industrial facilities; it is not a landfill breakdown claim.
Does ASTM D6400 mean a bag is home compostable?
No. ASTM D6400 concerns municipal or industrial aerobic composting. Do not interpret it as a universal home-compostability claim.
Can I put bagged dog waste in my green bin?
Only if your local program and receiving facility accept dog waste in that type of bag. Check both questions directly; certification alone does not establish acceptance.
Does a thicker bag perform better?
