The animals in the reported exhibits were Chow Chows, not giant pandas. Reports describe separate displays in Taizhou, Jiangsu, and Shanwei, Guangdong, in 2024, followed by a reported exhibit in Shandong in 2026. The available reporting raises animal-welfare concerns, but does not establish the dye formulations used in the 2024 cases or document injuries to those dogs.
What happened?
In May 2024, Taizhou Zoo displayed two Chow Chows painted black and white. Popular Science reported that zoo officials said the exhibit was labeled “panda dogs.” The report said the zoo did not have giant pandas and wanted to create the display, but did not establish what kind of dye was used. Popular Science reported on the Taizhou exhibit.
In September 2024, a zoo in Shanwei, Guangdong, acknowledged that panda-like animals in a viral video were Chow Chows dyed black and white. Visitors and online viewers questioned whether they were pandas after seeing dog-like behaviors, including panting, barking and wagging tails. CNA reported that zoo signs described them as “panda dogs.” A representative told Sichuan Observer, “These are chow chow dogs being painted as pandas and are part of our specialties.” CNA reported the Shanwei case.
These are separate incidents at different locations; do not treat one zoo’s explanation or labeling as applying to the other.

The 2026 Shandong case is a later report, not evidence that the 2024 dogs were involved or that the same products or process were used. The Asia Business Daily report attributes details to Chinese media and zoo officials; its wording should be treated cautiously because the article is AI-translated.
Is “panda dog” a real breed?
The reports use “panda dog” as a label for a dog styled to look like a panda. They identify the animals as Chow Chows, not giant pandas, a panda-dog hybrid or a newly established breed. “Panda dog” describes the appearance or exhibit label; it does not indicate a biological relationship to pandas.

Were visitors deceived?
The reporting describes visitor confusion and criticism, but does not establish that every visitor was deceived or that either 2024 zoo was found legally to have committed fraud. Taizhou officials reportedly said the exhibit was labeled “panda dogs”; CNA reported similar labeling at Shanwei and the representative’s acknowledgment that the animals were dogs.
Labels and presentation can affect what visitors understand, but the reviewed reports do not establish a legal finding of fraud or animal cruelty. Keep the distinction clear between reported criticism, an operator’s account and an adjudicated outcome.

Could dyeing the dogs harm them?
The practice raised animal-welfare concerns. CNA reported expert concerns that dyeing a pet’s fur can cause skin irritation and serious allergic reactions. Popular Science noted that the kind of dye used in Taizhou was unclear and cautioned that human hair dye can be dangerous to dogs. These are general risks, not evidence that a particular formulation was used in either 2024 exhibit or that an individual dog was injured.
The 2026 report also quoted a local veterinarian warning that dogs can develop allergic reactions and contact dermatitis, even when products are advertised as natural. That general warning, reported in an AI-translated article, does not establish harm to the dogs in these cases. The reviewed reporting does not document case-specific veterinary diagnoses for the 2024 dogs.
