Some cats may tolerate a tiny taste of plain, unsweetened yogurt, but many cats do not digest dairy well. Yogurt is optional—not a needed food or a proven digestive remedy. Avoid flavored or mixed products, count any taste among treats, and ask a veterinarian about symptoms, concerning ingredients, or cats on medical diets.
Why yogurt is only a sometimes food for cats
Yogurt is not a necessary part of a cat’s diet. Complete feline food should remain the nutritional base, and a small taste of yogurt is unlikely to add a needed nutritional benefit. The ASPCA recommends keeping treats limited; the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) says treats should provide no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calories. These are general treat recommendations, not yogurt-specific serving limits.
Cats vary in their ability to tolerate dairy. Lactose intolerance can cause diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal discomfort. Plain, unsweetened yogurt avoids added flavorings and sweeteners, but does not guarantee that a particular cat will tolerate it.
How to assess a yogurt product
There is no blanket “best yogurt” for cats. Check the full ingredient list and consider the product’s form and recipe, the calories and fat in the amount offered, and your cat’s tolerance, health history, and diet plan. A label such as “Greek,” “lactose-free,” or “probiotic” alone cannot establish that a product is suitable or therapeutic.

| Product feature | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Plain and unsweetened | Avoids added flavorings and sweeteners, but still contains dairy and may not be tolerated. |
| Greek-style or strained | Recipes vary; the label does not establish suitability or a cat’s tolerance. |
| Lactose-free | Addresses lactose but does not make yogurt necessary or appropriate for every cat; check other ingredients and calories. |
| Flavored, sweetened, frozen, or mixed | May contain added sugar, toppings, or ingredients that need separate safety assessment. Avoid unless your veterinarian has reviewed the specific product. |
| “Probiotic” yogurt | The label does not establish a feline benefit, therapeutic dose, or treatment effect. |
How much yogurt can a cat eat?
No universal yogurt serving based on a cat’s body weight is established. A tiny taste is a cautious suggestion, not a validated dose. Product calories, other treats, body condition, activity, life stage, and medical needs vary, so do not use a serving chart or a teaspoon amount as a medical rule.
If your veterinarian agrees that your cat may try yogurt, offer only a tiny taste and stop if any digestive signs occur. Count it among all treats. WSAVA recommends that treats make up no more than 10% of a cat’s daily calorie intake; ASPCA recommends treats represent 5% or less of daily food intake. These organizational recommendations differ and neither defines a yogurt portion.

What symptoms can yogurt cause?
VCA lists diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal discomfort among signs of lactose intolerance after milk consumption. Yogurt is dairy, but symptoms after eating it do not by themselves diagnose lactose intolerance or another condition.
If your cat develops symptoms, stop offering yogurt, keep the product label, and note the amount eaten, timing, and signs. Seek veterinary advice for significant, persistent, or recurring symptoms, reduced appetite, a known medical condition, or a prescribed diet. Chewy’s general guidance advises calling a veterinarian if symptoms do not resolve within 24 hours; follow your veterinarian’s advice for your cat’s situation.

What if my cat ate yogurt?
- Remove the product and check its complete ingredient list.
- Record the product, amount, and time eaten, and note any symptoms.

- Contact your veterinarian for significant or persistent symptoms, a concerning ingredient, or if your cat has a medical condition or prescribed diet.
For flavored, sugar-free, or mixed yogurt, assess the exact ingredients rather than relying on the product name. Chocolate, raisins, and other add-ins may need their own risk assessment. The ASPCA says xylitol does not cause serious problems in cats or ferrets, unlike dogs, so do not apply dog-specific xylitol toxicity claims to cats. A product may still contain other ingredients that warrant veterinary or poison-control advice.
Which cats should skip yogurt?
Ask your veterinarian before offering yogurt to a cat with a medical condition, food sensitivity, or veterinary-prescribed diet. WSAVA advises consulting the veterinary healthcare team about whether conventional treats are appropriate. If your cat has persistent gastrointestinal signs or appetite loss, seek veterinary assessment rather than trying yogurt or other cultured foods.

Are there better treat options?
Treats are not required. If you want to reward your cat, consider reserving a small portion of its regular complete food or selecting a commercial cat treat. Choose based on the ingredients, calories, and your cat’s health and feeding plan. A veterinary-reviewed Chewy guide also suggests lickable cat treats as a similar creamy snack; they are still treats and should be assessed like any other product.
