Collapsed Trachea in Dogs: Causes, Signs, Diagnosis, and Treatment

A collapsed trachea can cause a dry, goose-honk cough, but diagnosis requires veterinary assessment because other conditions can look similar. Learn how veterinarians evaluate the airway, manage signs, and decide whether a specialist procedure is appropriate.

Collapsed trachea is a narrowing of a dog’s windpipe caused by weakened supporting cartilage. The classic sign is a dry, harsh cough often compared to a goose honk, but a cough alone cannot diagnose the condition. Many dogs improve with veterinarian-guided medication and lifestyle changes; severe cases may need specialist assessment for a procedure, which supports the airway but does not cure the underlying disease.

When to seek emergency care

Seek immediate veterinary care if your dog has difficulty breathing, blue gums or tongue, or faints. Keep the dog calm and cool, avoid pressure on the neck, and call the veterinary hospital ahead if possible. Do not give human cough or cold medicine unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. See Cornell’s respiratory-distress guidance.

A goose-honk cough is suggestive, not diagnostic. Heart disease, infection, and other airway or lung problems can cause coughing too, and may occur alongside tracheal collapse.

What is a collapsed trachea?

The trachea, or windpipe, carries air toward the lungs and is supported by C-shaped cartilage rings. In affected dogs, weakened rings can flatten and narrow the airway, restricting airflow. Collapse may involve the neck portion of the trachea, the portion inside the chest, or more than one section; in some dogs, smaller airways are affected too.

The cause is not fully established. Veterinary sources describe possible multiple contributing factors and a suspected genetic component, particularly because small and toy breeds are commonly affected. The condition is progressive and has no known cure, but signs and quality of life can often be managed.

What causes tracheal collapse in dogs?

Breed and risk context

Tracheal collapse is most commonly seen in toy and miniature breeds, including Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Poodles, and Chihuahuas. Larger dogs can also be affected. Breed predisposition does not establish a single cause in an individual dog. See the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) overview.

Factors that can worsen signs

Excess weight, heart disease, chronic bronchitis or other airway disease, smoke and other airway irritants, heat, humidity, excitement, exercise, stress, and pressure on the neck can worsen signs or complicate management. These are aggravating factors, not proof that a particular exposure caused a dog’s condition.

Signs of tracheal collapse

  • A persistent, dry, harsh cough, often described as a goose-honking cough.
  • Coughing after excitement, exercise, eating or drinking, being picked up, or pressure from a collar.
  • Wheezing or increased effort when breathing.
  • Reduced exercise tolerance.
  • Fainting or blue gums or tongue, which require immediate veterinary care.

Record a video of a typical episode if it is safe to do so. It may help the veterinarian assess the cough and its triggers. Do not repeatedly press on your dog’s throat to try to trigger a cough.

What else can cause a dog to cough?

Tracheal collapse is only one possible explanation for coughing. Infection, chronic bronchitis, other airway disease, heart disease, and lung disease can also cause signs. A veterinarian should assess the dog and consider concurrent conditions rather than diagnosing from the sound of the cough alone.

How veterinarians diagnose collapsed trachea

History and physical examination

The veterinarian will ask about the dog’s breed, weight, cough, breathing, and possible triggers, then examine the dog and assess for other airway, heart, or lung problems. Bloodwork may help assess overall health. Cardiac evaluation may be appropriate when heart disease is a concern.

Comparing diagnostic tests

Test What it can show Limitations or considerations
Chest radiographs (X-rays) A still image that may show tracheal narrowing and help assess the heart, lungs, and surrounding structures. Captures a moment in time, so it may miss dynamic collapse.
Fluoroscopy Moving X-ray imaging that can show the airway during inhalation and exhalation and help locate dynamic collapse. Does not directly show the airway lining or collect samples.
Bronchoscopy Directly visualizes the airway; fluid sampling may also be possible. Requires anesthesia, and sedation can affect breathing.

A normal chest X-ray does not necessarily rule out tracheal collapse. No single test is universally required or sufficient: the veterinarian chooses tests based on the clinical question and the individual dog. For further information, see Merck Veterinary Manual’s dog-owner overview and the professional overview of respiratory diseases.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment is individualized. It may combine veterinarian-prescribed medication, weight management when needed, reduced exposure to triggers, and care for concurrent heart or lung disease. Medication may control coughing, inflammation, anxiety, or airway spasm, but it does not restore weakened cartilage.

Practical management at home

  1. Use a well-fitted body harness: It can reduce pressure on the neck compared with a collar, but it does not treat the collapsed airway or make forceful pulling safe.
  2. Manage weight: Ask your veterinarian for a safe weight and activity plan if your dog is overweight.
  3. Reduce triggers: Limit smoke and other airway irritants, overheating, excessive excitement, and strenuous activity as advised by your veterinarian.
  4. Follow medication instructions: Give only veterinarian-prescribed medicines. Do not give human cough products or leftover antibiotics without veterinary direction.
  5. Track changes: Note cough frequency, triggers, breathing difficulty, and response to treatment, and share the information with your veterinarian.

Medication and antibiotics

Veterinarians may prescribe medicines to control coughing or inflammation and may use bronchodilators in selected cases. The choice depends on the dog’s signs, test results, and other health conditions. Antibiotics are appropriate when infection is present; they are not automatic treatment for structural collapse.

When are a tracheal stent or surgery considered?

If signs remain poorly controlled or respiratory emergencies occur, a veterinary specialist may assess whether an intervention is appropriate. An intraluminal tracheal stent supports the airway from inside. Surgically placed external rings may be considered for selected cases of collapse in the neck portion of the trachea.

These procedures can improve airway support but do not eliminate the underlying disease or guarantee that coughing will stop. Continued medication and follow-up may be needed. ACVS describes potential complications including persistent cough, irritation or tissue growth around a stent, stent movement or breakage, and complications of external-ring surgery. See the ACVS guidance and the University of Illinois overview of tracheal stents.

Prognosis and quality of life

Many dogs, especially those with milder disease, can improve with ongoing medical management. Severity, response to treatment, and concurrent conditions affect prognosis. A veterinarian can assess the whole airway and help decide whether medical management is sufficient or referral is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a collapsed trachea cough sound like?

It is often a persistent, dry, harsh cough compared to a goose honk. The sound can suggest tracheal collapse but cannot confirm it; other conditions can also cause coughing.

Can a dog have tracheal collapse if the X-ray is normal?

Yes. A chest X-ray captures a still image and may miss dynamic narrowing. The veterinarian may recommend fluoroscopy or bronchoscopy when more information is needed.

Can a dog live with a collapsed trachea?

Many dogs improve with ongoing medical management, especially when disease is mild. The veterinarian’s assessment of severity, response to treatment, and concurrent conditions helps guide care.

Do antibiotics treat tracheal collapse?

Antibiotics treat infection when it is present; they do not treat the weakened cartilage itself and are not automatic treatment for uncomplicated collapse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a stent or surgery cure the condition?

No. A stent or external rings can support selected airway segments, but the underlying disease remains. Cough may persist, and continued medication and follow-up may be needed.
