Yes. A broody domestic duck can brood orphaned ducklings, but she may not accept them. University of Missouri Extension recommends introducing ducklings that she did not hatch at night, then watching the group and separating the ducklings if she rejects or injures them. If no suitable foster is available, artificial brooding is the fallback. Wild ducklings are different: prioritize reuniting them with their family or contacting a permitted wildlife rehabilitator.
Can a duck adopt ducklings that are not hers?
It is possible, but acceptance is not guaranteed. University of Missouri Extension says ducklings and goslings can be brooded by most breeds of ducks and geese; broody chicken hens can also brood them. The guidance supports trying a foster, not assuming that every hen will accept unfamiliar young.
Before attempting an introduction, make sure the domestic duck is broody and has a dry, comfortable, protected place for herself and the ducklings. Missouri Extension also advises checking broody birds for lice and mites. Its recommendation for ducklings that were not hatched by the foster is to place them under her at night. How to introduce orphaned domestic ducklings
- Prepare a safe space. Provide dry, comfortable shelter protected from weather and predators, with room for the duck and ducklings.
- Introduce them at night. Place the ducklings under the broody female, following Missouri Extension’s recommendation for young she did not hatch.
- Observe their interactions. Watch for rejection or harm. The extension guidance does not set a universal monitoring period, so do not treat a brief check as proof of acceptance.
- Separate them if necessary. If the duck rejects or injures the ducklings, remove them and provide artificial brooding or seek expert help.
No reliable acceptance percentage or universal introduction protocol is established by this guidance. A nighttime introduction is an attempt, not a guarantee.

What to do if the duck will not accept them
Use an artificial brooder if no suitable foster accepts the ducklings. They need supplemental warmth, a dry, draft-free area, feed, and drinking water. Set up the heat so the ducklings can move away from it if they become too warm; use the heat source according to its instructions and ensure the setup is secure.
Temperature guidance
Cornell University’s Duck Research Laboratory lists approximate brooding temperatures of 86°F (30°C) at hatch, 81°F (27°C) at 7 days, and 73°F (23°C) at 14 days. Use duckling behavior as a check
Wisconsin Extension advises watching how ducklings respond to the heat: ducklings that are too hot move away from the heat source, while those that are too cold may pile up and become noisy. Wild ducklings need a different response
Do not apply domestic-poultry fostering instructions to a wild duckling. If you know where a separated wild duckling’s family is, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife advises placing it near its siblings and where the parent can hear it, then watching from a distance. The agency also suggests trying a brood of approximately the same age. If the duckling is rejected, sick, or injured, contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator.
