Do not assume that a pesticide is harmless around pets. Keep pets away from the treatment area as directed by the label, and do not apply a wasp-control product to a pet.
Check the label before using a spray
EPA advises reading pesticide labels before purchase, storage, and use. Use a product only for purposes listed on its label, and do not apply more than directed. The label on the exact product you choose controls its permitted use, application directions, precautions, and re-entry requirements.
For example, the EPA-accepted label for one wasp-and-hornet spray says to treat in early morning or late evening when insect activity is minimal, stand at a safe distance rather than directly beneath the nest, and wait at least 24 hours before removing the nest. Those are directions for that specific product, not universal rules. Read and follow the complete label on your product.

Protect pets and people during treatment
- Assess the nest from a safe distance. Do not stand directly beneath it.
- Before application, remove pets from the area and keep them away from the treatment zone.
- Follow the product label for the permitted application site, method, weather conditions, protective precautions, and nest-removal timing.
- Keep pets and people out for the label-specified period. Do not rely on a drying or re-entry interval taken from a different product.
- Store pesticide products where pets cannot reach them, and follow the label for storage and disposal.
EPA’s pet guidance says to keep pets out of treated areas as directed by the label. The reviewed wasp-and-hornet spray label states, “Do not apply to pets.”
Avoid drift and runoff
EPA advises against outdoor pesticide spraying on windy or rainy days. Follow the product’s environmental precautions, including restrictions intended to prevent pesticide from reaching drains or aquatic areas. The reviewed wasp-and-hornet spray label also warns about toxicity to bees and aquatic organisms.

Consider contacting a local professional if the nest is difficult to reach or if you cannot keep pets and people clear during treatment. EPA advises asking commercial applicators about potential risks and safety precautions. Do not assume a particular method or outcome: ask what work is proposed and what precautions apply to your household.

- Ask when pets may safely return to the area.
- Ask whether outdoor conditions or nearby drains and water require additional precautions.

Can I use wasp spray around my pets?

How long should pets stay away after wasp spray?
There is no single interval that applies to every product. Follow the exact label’s re-entry directions; do not generalize a drying or waiting time from another spray.
Can I remove a nest 24 hours after spraying?
Only if the label for the product you used says to wait that long and its other directions permit removal. The reviewed EPA-accepted label gives a 24-hour wait, but that is a product-specific instruction, not a universal rule.
