What to Do When Your Dog Freezes or Hides Around Other Dogs

When your dog freezes or hides around other dogs, calmly create space, avoid forced greetings, and use gradual, reward-based training to build comfort.

If your dog freezes or hides when another dog appears, calmly create distance and let them feel safe. Don’t force a greeting, pull them closer, or allow another dog to approach and corner them. Freezing can be a sign of fear or discomfort, but it isn’t a diagnosis on its own; look at your dog’s whole body and the situation.

What freezing or hiding may mean

Freezing, retreating, or hiding can signal fear or discomfort. Other possible signs include a tucked tail, lip licking, panting, or growling. Read these cues together and consider what is happening around your dog rather than assuming one behavior always has the same cause. The Humane Society of Utah’s guide to dog body language describes several signs to watch for.

What to do during an encounter

  1. Stay calm and give your dog room. Let them retreat; don’t chase or corner them.
  2. Increase distance. Step off the path, turn around, or move behind a tree, parked car, or other visual barrier. Guidance from the American Kennel Club and VCA supports managing the encounter rather than insisting on a close approach.
  3. Skip the greeting if your dog is struggling. For now, avoid close, uncontrolled greetings and settings such as dog parks if they overwhelm your dog. Choose predictable situations where you can control distance.
  4. Offer a reward only if your dog is comfortable enough to take it. Keep a preferred reward accessible; it could be food, a toy, or play. A treat pouch is one optional way to carry small rewards, not a treatment for fear.

How to build comfort over time

Use gradual desensitization and counterconditioning: let your dog notice another dog at a manageable distance, then pair that sight with something they value. A controlled setup lets you adjust distance and avoid unexpected approaches. Cornell’s guidance on fearful dogs suggests using a calm, non-reactive dog controlled by a leash or crate while the fearful dog is free to move about. The helper dog should not frighten or crowd them.

  1. Start far enough away that your dog can notice the other dog and remain relaxed.
  2. Pair noticing the dog with a valued reward. Pause or increase distance if your dog becomes uncomfortable.
  3. Across repeated sessions, make one part of the setup more challenging at a time, such as gradually reducing distance or later adding movement or sound.
  4. Continue only while your dog remains comfortable; let their behavior, not a preset distance, guide the pace.

The AKC’s illustrative training example begins 20 feet from a quiet, still dog and decreases distance one foot at a time while the dog stays below threshold, adding movement and sound separately. That is an example, not a universal starting distance. The AKC notes that this process can take months.

Approaches to avoid

  • Don’t force exposure. Keeping a distressed dog close to the trigger or making them “face” their fear can intensify distress. The AAHA behavior guidelines describe this as flooding and say it is never recommended.
  • Don’t punish fear or use aversive corrections. Avoid leash corrections, prong collars, shock collars, and similar methods. AAHA’s task force opposes aversive training methods, and the Humane Society of Utah warns that punishment can increase fear and anxiety.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional

Ask your veterinarian about a sudden change in behavior or serious anxiety. If aggression is present or you are concerned about safety, seek veterinary evaluation before starting a behavior program. VCA recommends a thorough physical examination in these cases because pain or another medical condition may contribute to behavior.

A qualified reward-based trainer can help structure gradual practice. For severe, persistent fear or aggression, ask your veterinarian about a veterinary behaviorist. When choosing help, look for relevant experience with fearful or reactive dogs, reward-based methods, and a plan that accounts for whether medical assessment is needed.
