After your cat gives birth, keep her and the kittens in a quiet, warm room with clean, dry bedding, and give the family space. Watch discreetly to make sure each kitten is breathing and begins nursing; most mother cats manage without help. Offer the mother water and a complete kitten or growth-and-development diet, weigh each kitten once dry and twice daily during the first week, and arrange a veterinary examination of the mother and litter within 24 hours.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if a kitten is cold, weak, persistently crying, or not nursing, or if the mother seems unwell or is neglecting the litter. During labor, urgent signs include straining for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, a kitten that remains stuck, sudden weakness, excessive bloody discharge, or a kitten arriving with no further kitten after an hour. Do not pull a stuck kitten or attempt invasive treatment at home.
First-day checklist
- Make the nest calm and clean. Keep the room quiet and warm, use clean, dry bedding, and keep other pets and visitors away. Watch from a distance and avoid unnecessary handling or interruptions.
- Check that each kitten is breathing and nursing. Nursing should begin soon after birth. If feeding has not started after half an hour, Cats Protection advises gently guiding the kitten toward a teat. If feeding remains poor, contact a veterinarian; do not wait if the kitten is weak, cold, or distressed.
- Support the mother. Keep fresh water available and offer a complete kitten or growth-and-development diet while she is nursing. Do not add calcium, vitamins, or other supplements unless her veterinarian recommends them.
- Record and weigh the kittens. Once dry, record each kitten’s weight using a digital scale that measures in grams. Weigh them twice daily during the first week and keep an individual record.
- Arrange a postpartum examination. Ask a veterinarian to examine the mother and litter within 24 hours. The visit can help assess whether delivery is complete and milk production is adequate.
When to call a veterinarian urgently
During labor, call a veterinarian for advice if the mother strains for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, a kitten remains stuck, she suddenly becomes weak, there is excessive bloody discharge, or a kitten is born and no further kitten appears after an hour. Greenish discharge can occur after a kitten or with the afterbirth, so consider the context and seek veterinary advice rather than trying to diagnose it at home.
After birth, seek prompt veterinary help for excessive bleeding, abnormal or foul-smelling discharge, fever or marked lethargy, a painful or swollen mammary gland, tremors or muscle spasms, seizures, or a prolapse. Treat a kitten that is cold, weak, persistently crying, or not nursing as a reason to contact a veterinarian promptly. These signs can have several causes; a veterinarian can assess the mother and litter.

Small amounts of spotting can continue after delivery. MSD Veterinary Manual describes normal lochia as dark red to black and odorless. Excessive bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, or discharge accompanied by an ill mother needs veterinary attention.
Nursing, warmth, and weight monitoring
Colostrum, the first milk, carries antibodies and is important soon after birth. Warm, dry kittens with a healthy, attentive mother usually need little human intervention. If the mother is avoiding the litter or kittens are not nursing well, contact a veterinarian. Any added heat must be monitored so kittens can move away from it and avoid overheating.

Use the same gram scale for each weighing and record each kitten separately. Merck Veterinary Manual recommends weighing kittens twice daily during the first week. MSD Veterinary Manual says weight loss or failure to gain about 10% of body weight per day beyond the first 24 hours can indicate a problem requiring immediate attention. Treat a concerning trend as a reason to contact the veterinarian, not as a home diagnosis.
