Covered vs. Uncovered Litter Boxes: Which Is Better for Cats?

A small study found no overall preference between covered and uncovered litter boxes, but individual cats favored both styles. Size, access and your cat’s behavior matter.

Neither covered nor uncovered litter boxes are better for every cat. In a direct comparison involving 28 cats, researchers found no overall preference, though some cats favored each style. Choose for usable space, easy entry, cleaning access and your cat’s response—not the cover alone.

Do cats prefer covered or uncovered litter boxes?

There is no evidence-based universal winner. In a study by Emma K. Grigg, Lindsay Pick and Belle Nibblett, 28 cats without a recent history of elimination disorders had exclusive access to one covered and one uncovered box for 14 days. The researchers found no significant overall difference in use. Four cats significantly favored the covered box, and four significantly favored the uncovered box; more cats showed no significant preference. Read the study.

The result describes the group, not a guarantee for an individual cat. The study used identical, large plastic storage tubs, the same fine-grained clumping litter and daily scooping. Its findings may not apply in the same way to boxes with different dimensions, different cleaning routines, cats with a history of house-soiling or homes where multiple cats share access.

How to choose a box your cat can use comfortably

Compare usable interior space

Merck Veterinary Manual guidance recommends a box at least 1.5 times the cat’s length, measured from nose to the base of the tail. Check the space inside rather than relying on outside measurements or a “large” label; a cover can reduce usable room. See Merck’s litter-box guidance.

Consider the entry and your cat’s mobility

A low entry can make a box easier for kittens and cats with mobility limitations. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Environment Guidelines describe low-sided boxes, or boxes with high clear walls and a low entry door, for unwell cats. Read the guidelines. A covered box is not a good fit if its doorway or step makes entry difficult.

Account for enclosure and airflow

Open boxes have more air circulation, and some cats dislike entering an enclosed space, according to Merck. That does not mean all cats reject covered boxes. If you are choosing between styles, observe whether your cat enters readily and uses the box consistently.

Make cleaning practical

With clumping litter, Cornell advises removing feces and urine clumps daily. A cover should not make routine scooping or checking the box harder. Daily scooping was also part of the covered-versus-uncovered study, so its comparison should be understood in that context. See Cornell’s house-soiling guidance.

How to find out which style suits your cat

  1. Offer a fair comparison. If practical, make both styles available while keeping litter, location and cleaning routine as similar as possible.
  2. Watch the cat, not just the box. Notice whether your cat enters without hesitation and uses the box. If one style is avoided, keep an acceptable alternative available rather than assuming the cat will adjust.
  3. When buying, compare dimensions and access. Look at usable interior space, entry height and how easily you can clean the box. The study does not establish that one commercial model is superior.

House-soiling may have causes beyond box style

A cat urinating or defecating outside the box is not proof that it dislikes a cover. Cornell lists medical problems, litter-box aversion and preference for another location among possible causes of house-soiling. A new elimination problem warrants attention to possible medical causes; consult a veterinarian rather than assuming a box-style change will resolve it.
