White foam after a coughing fit may be saliva or respiratory fluid brought up with gagging, but foam can also be vomit. Possible cough-related causes include kennel cough or another respiratory infection, tracheal collapse, heart disease, and pneumonia; foam color alone cannot identify the cause. Severe coughing with difficulty breathing is an emergency, while a recurring or persistent cough warrants prompt veterinary advice.
First, tell coughing from vomiting
A cough may end with gagging and a small amount of foamy material. Vomiting involves expulsion from the stomach and may include abdominal contractions. The difference is not always obvious, so do not treat your observation as a diagnosis. If practical and safe, record an episode and describe what happened first to your veterinarian.
| What you notice | What it may suggest | What to tell the veterinarian |
|---|---|---|
| Coughing followed by gagging and a little foam | A cough-related problem | The cough’s sound, timing, frequency, and whether anything came up |
| Expulsion with abdominal contractions | Vomiting rather than coughing | Whether the dog retched and what the material looked like |
| Unclear sequence or repeated episodes | The event may be difficult to classify at home | Share a video if safe, but do not delay urgent care to record one |
The American Kennel Club’s overview of white foam explains that coughing and vomiting can look similar and need different evaluation.
Possible causes of coughing up white foam
These are possibilities, not diagnoses. A veterinarian considers the history and examination, and may recommend tests to distinguish airway, lung, heart, infectious, or gastrointestinal causes.

When is coughing up white foam an emergency?
Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if your dog has severe coughing with difficulty breathing, collapses, or develops rapidly worsening distress. Repeated attempts to vomit without bringing anything up together with a swollen abdomen are also especially concerning. Do not wait to see whether emergency signs resolve.

When to contact your veterinarian
Call your veterinarian promptly if the cough recurs, persists, worsens, or comes with other signs of illness, even if your dog is breathing normally at the moment. Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital advises seeking an appointment if a dog coughs for several days without signs of subsiding.

What to do while arranging care
- Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately if your dog has difficulty breathing, collapses, or shows rapidly worsening distress. Do not delay care to gather information.
- For a recurring or persistent cough without emergency signs, call your veterinarian for case-specific advice and an examination plan.
- If it is safe and practical, record a short video. Note the timing, frequency, triggers, and whether anything came up; share it with the veterinarian.
- Do not give human medicine or an unprescribed cough remedy. Treatment depends on the cause, and medication should be given only when a veterinarian specifically directs it for your dog and this episode.
What may happen at the veterinary visit
Your veterinarian will ask about the cough and examine your dog, including listening to the heart and lungs. Depending on the findings, additional testing may be needed to distinguish airway, lung, cardiac, infectious, or gastrointestinal problems. The appropriate tests vary by case; Washington State University notes that a workup for suspected heart-related cough may include chest X-rays, an electrocardiogram, or heart ultrasound.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is white foam after coughing always kennel cough?
No. Kennel cough or another respiratory infection is one possibility, but tracheal collapse, heart disease, pneumonia, other airway or lung problems, and vomiting can also be involved. Foam color alone cannot diagnose the cause.
Can heart disease cause a dog to cough up foam?
Heart disease can be associated with coughing, but a cough by itself does not prove a cardiac cause. Lung and airway disease can also cause coughing. A veterinarian can assess the dog and decide whether further testing is needed.
