How to Stop a Cat From Pooping Outside the Litter Box

A cat pooping outside the litter box may have a health problem, pain, mobility difficulty, or a box preference. Start with a veterinary exam, then make careful changes to access, litter, location, and cleanup.

Start by booking a veterinary exam, especially if the behavior is new or persistent. Pain, digestive urgency, illness, or trouble getting into the box can all disrupt normal litter-box use. If your veterinarian has assessed health causes, make focused changes to the box and its surroundings; do not punish your cat.

Why a cat may poop outside the litter box

Soiling outside the box is a sign to investigate, not proof that a cat is misbehaving. Cornell’s Feline Health Center identifies possible medical causes, aversion to the box, litter, or location, and preference for another surface or spot. Digestive problems can make defecation painful or urgent; age-related mobility or cognitive changes may also interfere with box use. The Merck Veterinary Manual likewise advises veterinary attention when a cat stops using the box.

Because these causes can look alike at home, arrange a veterinary assessment for a new or continuing pattern rather than assuming it is behavioral. Your veterinarian can decide whether examination or diagnostic tests are needed. Do not start medication without veterinary guidance. Cornell notes that medication is not a standalone fix for house-soiling.

Make the litter box comfortable and accessible

After health concerns have been assessed, watch how your cat approaches and uses the box. A cat that approaches and retreats, struggles to climb in, or seems unable to turn around may be responding to access, size, or placement. Change one factor at a time where practical so you can tell what your cat prefers.

Check the box size, sides, and design

  • Choose a box with enough room to enter, turn around, dig, and leave comfortably. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that larger boxes are better because cats need room to dig and turn.
  • For kittens, older cats, or cats with mobility problems, try a lower entry. Larger cats may need a larger box.
  • If the box is covered, offer an uncovered option to test whether your cat dislikes confinement or trapped odors. This is a preference to assess, not a rule for every cat.

Test litter and location

Cornell reports that many cats prefer unscented, finer-textured litter at about one to two inches deep. Merck also notes a common preference for small, clumping particles and unscented litter. These are tendencies, not guarantees: offer a suitable alternative if needed, and change litter gradually rather than abruptly.

Place boxes in quiet, accessible locations away from food and water. Avoid spots where a cat could feel trapped or be surprised by another animal or person. Cornell and the ASPCA recommend one box per cat plus one extra; distribute them around the home instead of lining several up together.

If your cat repeatedly chooses one alternate spot, Cornell suggests trying a box there first. Once your cat is using it reliably, move it gradually if you need it elsewhere. If the cat seems to prefer the feel of the accident surface, test a litter texture closer to it.

Keep boxes clean and remove accident odors

Scoop at least once a day and clean the box regularly. The ASPCA recommends mild, unscented soap for box cleaning. For soiled floors or furnishings, use an enzymatic pet-odor cleaner labeled as suitable for that surface. The goal is to neutralize odor rather than cover it with fragrance. Cornell advises against ammonia- or vinegar-containing cleaners for house-soiling cleanup. Cleaning can help discourage a return to the same spot, but it does not reveal or treat the underlying cause.

When multiple cats share the home

First identify which cat is soiling before changing the setup. Then consider whether another animal blocks access, intimidates the cat, or can ambush it near the box. Provide separate box options in different locations, with a clear way to approach and leave. A household change or conflict may be relevant, but observation and veterinary assessment are more useful than guessing at a cause.

Do not punish; get help if the problem continues

Do not hit, yell at, or rub your cat’s face in feces. Cornell says punishment is ineffective and may increase anxiety, which can worsen house-soiling. Keep changes calm and use what you observe to guide the next step.

If the behavior continues after health concerns have been assessed and box conditions have been adjusted, ask your veterinarian about further help. Cornell notes that a veterinary behaviorist may offer insight into persistent house-soiling.
