Ice-cream sales and shark-incident counts may rise during warm seasons, but that pattern does not show that eating or selling ice cream causes shark attacks. Temperature or season can increase both ice-cream buying and the number of people entering the ocean; greater water exposure creates more opportunities for encounters. The familiar example is an illustration of confounding, not evidence of a measured causal effect.
Why the two trends can move together
Correlation means two measured variables vary together. It does not, by itself, establish that one causes the other. In this example, warm weather or seasonality is a proposed common cause: people may buy more ice cream, while more people also visit beaches and enter the water.
Imperial College London’s educational document sums up the proposed link: “Temperature is what links ice cream sales and shark attacks.” The pathway to a possible encounter is human activity in the water, not eating ice cream. The educational sources explain this reasoning but do not quantify how much beach attendance or water exposure changes incident counts.
What the famous example does—and does not—show
Educational materials use the ice-cream-and-shark example to explain spurious association and confounding. A fifth-edition textbook, Analysing Data Using Linear Models, presents imagined South African data as a possible association and explains that temperature could account for the pattern. It discusses examining the relationship within temperature conditions rather than relying only on the overall trend.

Do not treat this teaching example as a verified numerical finding. The sources reviewed for this article do not supply a matched dataset or a measured correlation coefficient linking ice-cream sales with shark incidents. A number should not be presented as an observed real-world result unless its dataset, geography, time period, definitions, and method are identified.
Association, adjustment, and causation

Even adjustment for temperature is not universal proof of causation. The variables measured, data quality, other possible confounders, and study design still matter.

Counts are not individual risk
A count of incidents is not the same as the chance of an incident for an individual swimmer. A higher count could reflect more people entering the water as well as changes in shark behavior or environmental conditions. To interpret actual data, researchers need to define what counts as a shark incident and consider exposure, such as the number of people or hours spent in the water.
The Florida Museum of Natural History describes the International Shark Attack File as a scientifically documented database of known shark attacks and distinguishes incident categories. It is a source for incident information, not evidence of a matched relationship between ice-cream sales and shark incidents.

How to evaluate a claim using real data
- Match the place and period. Sales, incidents, and weather should refer to the same geography and time intervals.
- Define the measures. Specify whether the exposure is sales or consumption, and how incidents are classified, including provoked or unprovoked categories where relevant.
- Consider water exposure. Incident counts alone do not show how many people or how many hours were spent in the water.
- Account for season or temperature. Compare the overall pattern with the relationship under comparable seasonal or temperature conditions.
- Describe the conclusion carefully. State whether the result is an association or whether the study design supports a causal claim.
FAQ
Does eating ice cream make a shark attack more likely?
The cited educational sources do not show that eating ice cream increases shark-incident risk. They use the example to explain how a shared factor such as temperature can make two trends move together.
Why might ice-cream sales and shark incidents rise at the same time?
Warm weather or seasonality may increase ice-cream buying and bring more people to beaches and into the water. Those trends can coincide without one causing the other.

Is there a real measured correlation between ice-cream sales and shark attacks?
The sources reviewed here do not provide a matched real-world dataset or a verified numerical correlation coefficient. Treat the familiar example as an educational illustration unless a specific dataset and method are cited.
Do shark-incident counts show an individual swimmer’s risk?
No. Counts do not account on their own for how many people entered the water or how long they stayed there. Incident definitions and exposure matter when interpreting risk.
