The right pet bird depends on the life you can provide: daily attention and cleaning, suitable space and enrichment, tolerance for noise and mess, veterinary access, and reliable care when you travel. Budgies and cockatiels may suit some households, while canaries and finches are often better for people who prefer song or observation to handling; no species is guaranteed to be quiet, tame, or talkative.
Before choosing, compare each candidate’s social needs, activity, handling preferences, likely lifespan, setup costs, and fit with your household. Consult a veterinarian experienced with birds before bringing one home.
What to compare before choosing a bird
- Social needs and handling: Some birds do best with compatible bird companions, while others may form close relationships with people. Some species and individuals dislike being handled.
- Activity and enrichment: Birds need opportunities for movement, play, foraging, and, for hook-billed birds, safe chewing.
- Noise and mess: A caged bird can still make noise and scatter feathers and food. Consider how often it may call, not just how loud it can be.
- Space and setup: Cage dimensions and layout should fit the bird’s size and movement patterns, with room for safe activity.
- Time and care coverage: Plan for daily care, cleaning, social contact, and a reliable bird sitter when you travel.
- Lifetime commitment and cost: Include food, housing, enrichment, routine veterinary visits, and unexpected care.
- Experience and support: Consider your experience and whether you can access a veterinarian who regularly treats birds.
Pet bird species at a glance
These are broad comparisons, not guarantees about an individual bird. Lifespan figures vary by source and measure; the examples below are attributed to their sources rather than presented as a definitive prediction.
| Bird | May suit someone who wants | Considerations | Sourced lifespan example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budgie (budgerigar or parakeet) | An active, social small bird that may learn words and enjoys play | Needs safe opportunities to fly, play, and chew. Talking is not assured; consider companionship and daily interaction. | AVMA: 6 years average, with reports up to 18 years. AAV: 5.5 years median captive life expectancy. |
| Cockatiel | A generally gentle, cheerful bird known for whistling | May be a better fit for someone who wants interaction without expecting extensive talking. Individual noise and handling preferences vary. | AVMA: 5 years average, with reports above 30 years. AAV: 9 years median captive life expectancy. |
| Canary | Song and observation rather than frequent handling | Some canaries may react negatively to handling; the AVMA notes they may do best singly. | No lifespan figure provided in the research sources. |
| Finch | Watching flock behavior, movement, and song | Finches are often happiest in small groups and may react negatively to handling. Provide suitable flight space. | No lifespan figure provided in the research sources. |
| Medium or large parrot | An experienced household prepared for substantial time and effort | Social and behavioral needs can be demanding. Plan for long-term care, backup care, noise, and enrichment; size does not make a parrot low-effort. | AVMA describes a broad range, including some estimates over decades; records are not typical life expectancy. |

Which bird might fit your household?
If you want an interactive small bird
Budgies are social, gentle, inquisitive, and active, according to VCA. They enjoy flying, playing, and chewing, and some may learn words with training. A budgie can be kept singly, in a pair, or in a small group, but companionship decisions should account for the individual bird, its environment, and the attention you can provide. Ask an avian veterinarian or qualified behavior professional about your setup.
Cockatiels are generally described by VCA as gentle and cheerful, with whistling and limited talking ability. They may suit someone looking for a social companion, but they are not a guaranteed quiet or cuddly choice. Meet the individual bird and consider its handling preferences and your household’s tolerance for calls and mess.
If you prefer song and observation
Canaries and finches may be a better match if you do not expect frequent handling. The AVMA notes that canaries may do best singly, while finches are often happiest in small groups. Some birds in both groups may react negatively to handling, so choose them for the companionship you can offer rather than assuming every bird will enjoy being held.
If you are considering a larger parrot
Medium and large parrots can have distinctive personalities and require more owner time and effort to meet their social and behavioral needs. Their care may involve substantial long-term planning, including reliable care during travel and changes in the household. Talk with an avian veterinarian and meet adult birds through a reputable rescue or other responsible source before making a commitment.

How long do pet birds live?
Lifespan estimates differ by source and by the measure used. For example, the AVMA’s Selecting a Bird gives an average of 6 years for parakeets and 5 years for cockatiels, alongside reports of longer lives. The AAV’s senior-parrot table gives median captive life expectancies of 5.5 years for budgerigars and 9 years for cockatiels. These figures should not be combined into a single definitive range or treated as a promise for an individual bird.
Ask about the likely commitment for the species and individual you are considering, and plan for aging, illness, travel, and changes in your housing or work situation.
Housing, diet, and enrichment
Choose suitable space
Cage size and layout depend on the bird’s body size and behavior. VCA says the enclosure should allow comfortable movement and advises that “bigger is better!” Its published starting guidance for small birds is:
| Birds | Example cage dimensions |
|---|---|
| Finches, canaries, and budgerigars | 1 × 1 × 2 feet |
| Cockatiels, lovebirds, and parrotlets | 2 × 2 × 3 feet |
| Conures, caiques, and Senegal parrots | 3 × 3 × 3 feet |
These are VCA recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular enclosure meets an individual bird’s needs. Check the dimensions and layout with a bird-experienced veterinarian or another qualified professional, and provide safe opportunities for movement outside the enclosure where appropriate.

Plan a species-conscious diet
An all-seed diet is not a balanced default for companion birds. Diet should reflect the species and the individual bird’s health, and changing an established diet can be difficult. Ask an avian veterinarian to help plan an appropriate diet and any transition; do not assume a single feeding plan suits every bird.

Provide safe activity and enrichment
Offer safe, species-appropriate opportunities for movement, play, foraging, and chewing. Budgies, like other hook-billed birds, need appropriate ways to chew. Choose toys for the bird’s size and behavior, and check them regularly for damage. Enrichment should match the individual rather than follow a one-size-fits-all list.

FAQ
What is the best pet bird for beginners?
There is no universal best bird. Budgies and cockatiels may suit some people seeking an interactive companion, while canaries or finches may suit people who prefer song and observation. Consider your time, experience, space, noise tolerance, and access to veterinary care before deciding.
Are budgies or cockatiels easier to care for?
Neither should be assumed to be easy or low-maintenance. Budgies are active and need opportunities to fly, play, and chew. Cockatiels have their own social, housing, diet, and veterinary needs. Choose based on the individual bird and the care you can reliably provide.
How long do pet birds live?
It depends on the species, individual bird, and source’s measure. The AVMA lists average examples of 6 years for parakeets and 5 years for cockatiels, while the AAV reports median captive life expectancies of 5.5 years for budgerigars and 9 years for cockatiels. These estimates are not guarantees.
Do pet birds need a lot of attention?
All birds need regular care and attention. Plan for daily feeding and cleaning, appropriate social contact and enrichment, veterinary care, and coverage when you travel. A caged bird can still make noise and scatter feathers and food.

Budgies are social, and guidance differs on whether they should live singly or with other birds. Consider the individual bird, its environment, and the time you can spend with it, and ask an avian veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for advice about a specific arrangement.
Can a pet bird be cuddly or talk?
Some individual birds may enjoy handling or learn words, but neither behavior is guaranteed. Species, individual temperament, experience, training, and environment all matter. Choose a bird for the relationship you can support, not for a hoped-for trick or behavior.
Bottom line
Choose a bird whose social needs, activity, noise, space, mess, and care requirements fit your household. Budgies and cockatiels may appeal to people seeking an interactive companion; canaries and finches may be better for song or observation. Before acquiring any bird, arrange suitable housing, a species-conscious diet, daily care, travel coverage, and access to a veterinarian experienced with birds.
