Dogs may show behavior changes after a close companion dog dies, including changes in eating, sleeping, playing, fearfulness, or social behavior. These changes are consistent with a grief-like response, but current evidence does not establish what dogs understand about death or prove that they experience grief as humans do.
Reactions vary, and routine changes, people’s emotions, or an unrelated health problem may also affect a dog’s behavior. Keep familiar routines where practical, offer calm reassurance and familiar activities, and seek veterinary advice if changes persist or your dog stops eating.
What does “grief” mean in dogs?
When people ask whether dogs grieve, they are often asking whether a dog can respond to the loss of a companion. Owners have reported changes in surviving dogs after another dog died, but those observations cannot reveal exactly what a dog is thinking or feeling.
It is more precise to describe these as reported changes or grief-like behavior than to claim dogs mourn exactly as humans do. Several explanations may overlap:

A dog can be affected by a companion’s absence while also having a health problem. Do not assume that a new behavior or physical symptom is grief.
What the research shows
A 2022 study in Scientific Reports surveyed 426 Italian adults who had owned at least two dogs, one of which died while another survived. Owners reported changes in the surviving dogs’ activities, including playing, sleeping, and eating, as well as changes in fearfulness. Friendly or parental relationships and food sharing were associated with negative behavioral changes; time spent living together was not. The study relied on retrospective owner reports and does not establish dogs’ subjective experience or understanding of death. Read the 2022 study.
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists possible changes such as seeking more attention, reactivity, anxiety or withdrawal, and shifts in eating, playing, or sleeping. Cornell also notes that changed human emotions and household routines may be relevant, and recommends a physical examination for persistent changes. See Cornell’s veterinary guidance.

How to support your dog
- Keep familiar routines steady. Keep meals, walks, rest, and other regular activities as consistent as practical.
- Offer calm reassurance. Be available when your dog seeks contact, without forcing interaction.
- Continue familiar activities. Offer walks, play, or other activities your dog usually enjoys, following the dog’s comfort and health.
- Try optional enrichment. A food puzzle or foraging toy may provide an engaging activity if your dog is interested in it. It is not a treatment for grief.
- Watch for persistent or concerning changes. Note changes in eating, sleeping, playing, anxiety, or social behavior and discuss them with your veterinarian when they persist or concern you.
The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center advises seeking veterinary guidance if a dog stops eating. Cornell likewise recommends an examination for persistent changes.
When to contact a veterinarian
Do not wait for a presumed grieving period to pass if your dog stops eating or has persistent, worsening, or otherwise concerning changes. A veterinarian can assess health and behavior rather than assuming the cause is emotional. Cornell recommends a physical examination when changes persist.

- A MEMORIAL, NOT JUST AN URN: Behind the glass front is a 5x7 photo of your dog. Inside are the ashes, a 20 photo album, and room for their collar and a favorite toy. All of it together, in one box.
- SIZED FOR BIG DOGS, UP TO 95 LB: At 9.5 by 7.8 by 5.7 inches it takes the ashes of a labrador, german shepherd or golden, where most pet urns for ashes are built for cats and small breeds.
- CLAY PAW PRINT KIT INCLUDED: Cast your dog or cat paw print and hang it on the front of the box, with a hook above it for their collar tag. Nothing else to order and nothing else to buy.
- PHOTO ALBUM ON AN INSIDE RACK: The 20 photo album sits on its own rack inside, so the pictures stay with the ashes instead of in a drawer in another room.
- WALL MOUNT OR SHELF, MAGNETIC LID: Hang it or stand it on a mantel. The lid seals flush and holds firm so the box is safe to keep out, and still opens when you want to add something.
What changes might I notice?
Reported changes include differences in eating, sleeping, playing, fearfulness, anxiety, withdrawal, reactivity, or seeking attention. A change may also relate to household routines, people’s emotions, or a medical issue.
Do dogs understand that death is permanent?
The evidence described here does not establish whether dogs understand death’s permanence. Owner-reported behavior changes cannot answer that question.
