If your cat brings up food, note whether it happened with retching and abdominal effort or came up passively soon after a meal. Vomiting and regurgitation are different patterns, and a video can help your veterinarian tell them apart. Fast eating is one possible explanation for promptly returning undigested food, but recurring episodes or other signs of illness deserve veterinary attention.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if vomiting recurs, happens more than once a week, or occurs with lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, changes in thirst or urination, or diarrhea. Suspected toxin or foreign-object ingestion warrants immediate veterinary advice. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to.
Vomiting or regurgitation?
Vomiting is an active process that may involve nausea, retching, and abdominal contractions. Regurgitation is generally more passive, often happens soon after eating or drinking, and may bring up undigested food. Coughing can also be mistaken for either. These clues help describe what happened; they do not diagnose the cause.
| Clue | More consistent with | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Retching, nausea signs, or abdominal contractions | Vomiting | Timing, frequency, appearance, and any other signs of illness |
| Passive return of undigested food soon after eating or drinking | Regurgitation | Whether it happens repeatedly and how soon after a meal |
| Coughing or hacking, sometimes followed by swallowing | A possible respiratory event | A video may help your veterinarian distinguish it from vomiting |
As VCA Animal Hospitals explains, regurgitation is a more passive process often associated with esophageal problems. A video of an episode can help the veterinary team assess the behavior.

Why might my cat bring up undigested food?
Eating too quickly can be one explanation when a cat promptly and passively brings up undigested food. If your cat otherwise seems well and has no concerning signs, a slow-feeder bowl or food puzzle may be worth trying to slow the meal. This is an optional measure for a plausible fast-eating pattern, not a treatment for unexplained or recurring episodes.
Repeated regurgitation may be associated with an esophageal problem. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes disorders affecting the esophagus in cats. Arrange veterinary evaluation if the problem recurs or your cat seems unwell.

Possible causes of vomiting
The appearance of food alone cannot establish the cause. Potential causes include hairballs, dietary indiscretion or spoiled food, parasites, toxins, swallowed foreign objects, gastrointestinal disorders, and metabolic disease. Cornell and VCA describe a broad range of possible causes, including kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, obstruction, and other illness.
Do not assume recurring vomiting is just a hairball or that one episode proves a food intolerance. The cat’s overall condition, how often episodes occur, and changes in appetite, thirst, urination, stool, or energy all matter. See Cornell Feline Health Center’s vomiting guidance.

When should I call the veterinarian?
Contact your veterinarian promptly if vomiting recurs, occurs more often than once a week, or is accompanied by lethargy, weakness, decreased appetite, blood, increased thirst, urination changes, or diarrhea. VCA also identifies fever, abdominal pain, dehydration, and suspected ingestion of a foreign object or toxic substance as reasons for immediate veterinary care. Follow veterinary advice for your individual cat and local emergency options.
If your cat may have eaten a toxin or foreign object, contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic promptly. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you; vomiting can make some exposures more harmful. Cornell’s common cat hazards guide discusses household risks.

What to do while arranging veterinary advice
- Record what happened. Note whether there was retching or abdominal effort, what the material looked like, and how soon it followed food or water.
- Track the pattern. Write down how often it happens and any changes in appetite, energy, thirst, urination, stool, or weight.
- Take a video if possible. It may help the veterinarian distinguish vomiting, regurgitation, and coughing.
- Save relevant packaging. If a toxin, medication, or unusual food may be involved, keep its label or packaging to share with the veterinary team.
- Do not self-treat. Do not give human medication or induce vomiting based on online advice. Ask your veterinarian what to do about food and water for your cat’s situation.
Advice about temporarily withholding food depends on the circumstances. VCA says to follow the veterinarian’s specific instructions; do not treat fasting as universal advice. Water should remain freely available during a veterinarian-recommended bland-diet plan. See VCA’s vomiting guidance.

Why does my cat throw up right after eating?
Food returning soon after a meal, passively and undigested, may be regurgitation. Fast eating is one possible explanation, but repeated episodes can be associated with an esophageal problem and deserve veterinary attention.

How can I tell vomiting from regurgitation?
Vomiting generally involves active retching, nausea, or abdominal contractions. Regurgitation is usually more passive and often occurs soon after eating or drinking. A video can help your veterinarian assess the episode.
When should I call a vet about my cat vomiting?
Call promptly if episodes recur, happen more often than once a week, or come with lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, thirst or urination changes, or diarrhea. Suspected toxin or foreign-object ingestion warrants immediate veterinary advice.
Can I make my cat vomit after it eats something dangerous?
No—not unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you. Some substances can cause more damage when vomited. Contact a veterinary professional promptly.
Can a slow feeder help?
A slow feeder or food puzzle may help slow eating when a cat otherwise seems well and promptly brings up undigested food after eating quickly. It does not address other causes and should not delay veterinary care for recurring episodes or additional symptoms.

Retching and abdominal effort are more consistent with vomiting, while passive return of undigested food soon after eating may be regurgitation. Neither appearance nor timing establishes the cause. Record what happened and contact a veterinarian promptly for recurring episodes, other signs of illness, or possible toxin or foreign-object ingestion.
