Look at each dog’s posture, movement, facial expression, and willingness to disengage. Loose, wiggly behavior is more reassuring than a dog who becomes stiff, still, or hard-staring; when signals are mixed, calmly stop the interaction and give the dogs space.
What “bossy” behavior can—and can’t—tell you
“Bossy” is an informal label, not a diagnosis or proof that a dog is trying to establish dominance. Dogs may behave aggressively for different reasons, including fear, anxiety, or other motivations; pain and medical conditions can also affect behavior. UC Davis cautions that dominance is often mistakenly blamed for aggression, while the Merck Veterinary Manual describes multiple possible motivations. Neither source sets a special behavioral threshold for small dogs.
Merck describes play-associated aggression that can include play bows, chases, and charges. Those actions are useful context, not a guarantee that the other dog is comfortable. Read the whole interaction rather than assigning a meaning to one movement.
Compare the dogs’ whole-body signals
Assess both dogs, not just the one initiating contact. Notice whether their bodies look loose or tense, whether they can shift attention or move away, and whether either dog is trying to avoid the interaction. A dog may change from relaxed to uncomfortable as play continues.

| More reassuring signs | Signs to pause and assess |
|---|---|
| Loose, wiggly movement and relaxed social behavior | Stiffness, stillness, or a hard stare |
| The dog can disengage and the interaction remains comfortable | Freezing, persistent focus, turning away, hiding, or trying to escape |
| Play-associated actions such as play bows, chases, or charges, considered alongside both dogs’ responses | Snapping, growling, or showing teeth—especially early in an encounter or alongside tense posture |
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior contrasts loose, wiggly greeting behavior with stiff posture and a hard stare. A stiff dog may snap, growl, or bite if another dog continues to engage. A wagging tail, bark, growl, play bow, or apparent “role” in the interaction is not decisive by itself; context and the rest of the dog’s body matter.

- Panting, faster breathing, trembling, or muscle rigidity
- Lip or nose licking, yawning, or turning the head or body away
- Lowered posture, crouching, or slow movement
- Freezing, hiding, or trying to escape
- Increased reactivity or aggressiveness
AAHA lists these among signs of nonspecific anxiety or distress in a veterinary-clinic context. They are cues to interpret carefully, not a diagnosis that a dog is stressed during play. UC Davis also identifies avoiding eye contact, a lowered head and tail, ears held to the side, back, or down, and sustained eye contact or forward-leaning posture as cues to consider when assessing a dog’s motivation. A single cue can have different meanings depending on context.

- Interrupt calmly. If either dog freezes, stiffens, looks uncomfortable, avoids contact, or tries to escape, end the interaction rather than encouraging continued engagement.
- Create space. Give the dogs room to settle and reassess from a safer distance. Do not force a dog to stay near another dog.
- Avoid punishment or physical force. Merck cautions that physical punishment can worsen aggression.
- Seek veterinary guidance when aggression appears. Merck advises seeking veterinary help as soon as signs of aggression occur because of injury risk and the possibility that aggression may worsen. A veterinarian can also assess whether pain or a medical condition may be contributing.
For recurring, escalating, or dangerous interactions, consult a veterinarian rather than relying on the label “bossy.” A general guide cannot determine what is driving an individual dog’s behavior.
