What is a Maine Coon like?
The Maine Coon is a large, longhaired breed with a substantial, muscular, rectangular body. TICA’s standard describes substantial bone, a broad chest, large tufted paws, and a long, flowing tail. Breed standards describe a target appearance, not a guarantee that every pet will have the same size or features.
CFA describes Maine Coons as friendly, sweet-tempered, easygoing, and active, and notes that they can get along with children and other animals. These are general breed descriptions, not promises about an individual cat. Personality, socialization, health, and household circumstances all matter. Their size may initially intimidate small children or other animals, so supervise interactions and give the cat a safe place to retreat.
Origin and breed characteristics
The Maine Coon is associated with the state of Maine and is considered a natural breed. Its exact ancestry is uncertain; avoid treating popular origin stories as established fact.

CFA describes the Maine Coon as a large, rugged, longhaired breed. TICA’s breed standard describes a substantial, muscular, rectangular cat and emphasizes balance and proportion. A cat should not be considered a better example of the breed simply because it is heavier or longer.
Size and maturity
Maine Coons are large cats, but the research reviewed for this article did not establish a reliable adult weight range. A breed standard’s description of a large frame does not define an individual cat’s healthy weight. Ask your veterinarian to assess your cat’s body condition rather than using a fixed number as a goal.
TICA’s standard describes the breed as reaching full maturity at four to five years. This is a general breed reference, not a deadline that applies identically to every cat. Discuss growth and nutrition with your veterinarian, and do not try to accelerate growth through overfeeding.

Coat care
The Maine Coon’s long, heavy or flowing coat is a defining feature. CFA and TICA describe the coat, but the sources reviewed do not set a universal grooming frequency or bathing routine. Coat texture and the individual cat’s needs vary, so ask a veterinarian or breeder for care guidance suited to your cat.

Health concerns and screening
Breed-related health information can help owners and breeders know what to discuss, but it cannot diagnose an individual cat or guarantee future health. Ask a veterinarian about symptoms or screening, and ask a responsible breeder which tests are performed and how results are interpreted.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
HCM is an important cardiac health topic in Maine Coons. Cornell describes HCM as a commonly diagnosed heart disease in cats and notes evidence for a heritable component in Maine Coon lines. CFA references saliva tests and echocardiograms in its discussion of breeding-health work.
Ask a breeder what HCM screening has been performed, whether records are available, and how results were interpreted with veterinary guidance. A test or screening result does not guarantee that a cat will remain healthy.
Hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint and is a relevant health concern in Maine Coons. Cornell says it appears more prevalent in certain breeds, including Maine Coons, and explains that X-rays can confirm a diagnosis.

Signs that merit veterinary assessment can include limping or difficulty walking, avoiding activity, pain when the hip is touched, or persistent licking or chewing at the hip. These signs do not establish a diagnosis on their own. GCCF also lists hip dysplasia as a hereditary issue and notes that there is no simple gene test for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a breeder or rescue
When speaking with a breeder, ask what health screening is done for HCM and hip dysplasia, which methods or professionals are involved, and whether you can review the records. CFA references HCM saliva tests and echocardiograms, as well as hip X-rays, in its discussion of breeding-health work. Screening can inform decisions, but it does not eliminate all health risks.
If adopting or rehoming, ask what is known about the cat’s health, temperament, and history. Records may be incomplete, so treat missing information as uncertainty rather than proof of either health or illness.
