This Golden Retriever’s towel habit is a preference, not a diagnosis—and it does not show that Golden Retrievers generally prefer towels. Puppies commonly explore by chewing, and teething can make chewing more intense. Fabric can attract a dog for different reasons, but the details here do not establish what this puppy does with towels or why he chooses them.
Why might a puppy choose towels over toys?
Chewing is one way puppies explore their surroundings, and teething may intensify the urge. Interest in fabric can have more than one explanation; without knowing whether this dog carries, mouths, shreds, or swallows towels, it is not possible to identify his reason.
Fabric sucking and chewing are behaviors discussed by the ASPCA. For comparison, behavior experts cited by PetMD describe possible reasons dogs shred paper products, including odor, enjoyment, boredom, or anxiety. Those possibilities are not a diagnosis of this dog, and paper-shredding explanations should not be assumed to explain towel interest.
How to redirect him safely
- Put towels and laundry out of reach. Keep the items he is not allowed to chew inaccessible while he learns. If towels are meant to be off limits, avoid offering an old towel as a permitted chew item: a puppy may not reliably distinguish it from other towels. Cornell University’s guidance recommends keeping forbidden items away and appropriate toys available.
- Swap calmly. If he takes a towel, remove it and offer an appropriate toy instead. Cornell veterinarian Brian Collins, DVM, advises: “Just take the object away, replace it with a toy, and reward the good behavior.”
- Reward the choice you want. Praise or otherwise reward him when he engages with the toy. Collins describes positive reinforcement as “the most effective and humane approach to addressing behavior issues.”
- Supervise new toys. Watch how he uses a toy, especially at first. Stop offering it if he chews pieces off; VCA Animal Hospitals says a toy is not recommended for a pet that removes pieces from it.
These steps follow guidance from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Choose enrichment to match his play style
A toy is not automatically safe or interesting for every dog, and no particular toy is established as a fix for this habit. VCA describes several kinds of enrichment to consider:
- Chewing or licking: Food-stuffable toys such as KONG or Toppl are examples. Use only an option he can handle safely.
- Puzzle-solving: Nina Ottosson puzzle toys are an example of toys that offer a problem-solving activity.
- Food seeking: Hunting-style toys such as Bob-A-Lot encourage a dog to work to find food.
Consider his size and chewing style, whether food is involved, and whether he tries to tear off or swallow pieces. VCA advises monitoring pets with toys, at least initially. Its examples are categories to consider, not evidence that one will work better than another for this Golden Retriever. See VCA’s guidance on enrichment and activity toys.

When towel chewing needs extra help
Chewing becomes more concerning if it is prolonged and difficult to interrupt, or if it occurs alongside signs of distress. In those circumstances, consult a veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional rather than assuming it is ordinary puppy mischief. The ASPCA discusses signs that may warrant behavior help in its guidance on destructive chewing.
Swallowed fabric or pieces of a toy can be dangerous. The ASPCA warns that rapidly consuming chew material can cause intestinal obstruction or perforation. If he has swallowed a towel fragment or toy chunk, contact a veterinarian for advice; consult the ASPCA’s position statement on dog chews and treats.
