Why are great white sharks washing up dead with swollen brains? The cause is not established: secondary reporting describes North Atlantic cases of meningoencephalitis, while a separate South Australian investigation found signs consistent with Karenia exposure in some sharks. The evidence does not show that these events share a cause or that shark deaths have suddenly increased above normal levels.
What does the evidence show?
The reports describe distinct events in different regions, with different affected body systems and different levels of evidence. Meningoencephalitis means inflammation involving the brain and its protective membranes; it describes a finding, not what caused it.
| Event | What was reported | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| North Atlantic brain-inflammation reports | A 2025 secondary e-paper article reported nine white shark cases with brain swelling since July 2022 and described meningoencephalitis in examined sharks. | The underlying primary case series and current verified count were not located in this research pass. The cause and whether cases represent increased mortality are unknown. |
| Prince Edward Island examination | The Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI reported that a juvenile male found on Greenwich Beach on August 7, 2023, was well fed, had a healthy liver, and showed no significant injuries, trauma, or fishing entanglement. | The account said tissue analysis was needed to investigate other causes. It did not report brain swelling or a final diagnosis. |
| South Australia strandings | Government records cover white sharks found from April through July 2025. Some had gill findings consistent with exposure to high Karenia levels. | The findings did not establish that Karenia caused the deaths or that this event is connected to North Atlantic brain inflammation. |
Why are great white sharks washing up dead with swollen brains?
The cause of the brain inflammation reported in North Atlantic sharks is not established. The available account is secondary reporting, and the primary case-by-case records were not located in this research pass. The reported count should therefore not be treated as a confirmed outbreak measure or proof of a trend.
Brain inflammation can be associated with different processes, but the evidence reviewed does not identify an infectious agent or another cause. Meningoencephalitis is a description of inflammation involving the brain and its membranes, not a diagnosis of what triggered it or proof that it caused death.

What happened in South Australia?
South Australia’s 2025 strandings were investigated separately from the North Atlantic brain-inflammation reports. ABC News reported that nine white shark deaths were investigated between April and July 2025; three had physical symptoms, including gill damage, consistent with exposure to high Karenia levels.
That consistency finding is not proof that Karenia caused the deaths. Low brevetoxin concentrations were found, but their contribution was unknown, and decomposition prevented reliable gill assessment in several other carcasses. Professor Mike Steer, SARDI executive director, said of the nine sharks, “Out of the nine, three of them were clearly impacted by the Karenia,” as quoted by ABC. The official examination findings did not conclude that Karenia caused those deaths.

How should the two reports be compared?
These reports concern different regions and findings. The North Atlantic account describes brain and membrane inflammation; South Australia’s records describe gill findings consistent with algal exposure in some sharks. The evidence reviewed does not demonstrate a shared mechanism.
| Comparison | North Atlantic reports | South Australia investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Region and period | Cases reported since July 2022; the detailed count comes from secondary reporting. | White shark deaths investigated from April through July 2025. |
| Finding | Secondary reporting describes meningoencephalitis in examined sharks. | Some sharks had gill findings consistent with high Karenia exposure. |
| Evidence source | A secondary e-paper account; underlying primary case records were not located in this research pass. | South Australian government examination records, with details reported by ABC News. |
| Causal certainty | The cause of the brain inflammation and deaths is unknown. | Exposure-consistent findings were reported, but Karenia was not established as the cause of death. |
Does “suddenly” mean shark deaths are increasing?
That trend is not verified by the sources reviewed. A reliable baseline comparison was not available, so the reported cases do not establish mortality above normal levels or a sudden population-wide increase.

Likewise, the North Atlantic brain-inflammation reports and South Australian algal-exposure findings should not be combined into one outbreak. They describe separate events, and no shared cause has been demonstrated.
What remains unknown?
- The primary case-by-case records and current verified count for North Atlantic white sharks with meningoencephalitis.
- Whether an infectious agent or another factor caused the reported brain inflammation.
- Whether the reports represent mortality above the normal baseline or a newly emerging disease pattern.
- Whether Karenia contributed to the South Australian deaths; the reported findings do not establish causation.
- Whether the North Atlantic and South Australian events are connected; the reviewed sources provide no evidence of a shared cause.
FAQ
What is causing the brain inflammation in dead great white sharks?
The cause is not established in the sources reviewed. The North Atlantic case count and summary come from secondary reporting, and the underlying primary case series was not located in this research pass.

Did Karenia kill the great white sharks in South Australia?
The evidence cited does not establish that. Some sharks had gill findings consistent with exposure to high Karenia levels, but the official examination summaries did not conclude that the bloom caused the deaths.
Are the South Australian deaths linked to the North Atlantic brain-inflammation reports?
No link is demonstrated by the reviewed sources. The reports describe separate events, in different regions, with different findings.

- South Australian Department for Environment and Water wildlife records.
- Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI account of the 2023 Prince Edward Island examination.
- The Point e-paper’s 2025 secondary report on North Atlantic white shark brain-inflammation cases.
Bottom line: Secondary reporting describes North Atlantic white sharks with brain inflammation, but its scale and cause remain unverified in the primary records reviewed. A separate South Australian investigation found Karenia-consistent gill damage in some sharks without establishing that the bloom caused their deaths; neither a shared cause nor a sudden rise in mortality has been demonstrated.
