Cows have a specialized digestive system that lets them use grass, and their rumen microbes do much of the work of breaking down plant material. They also gather grass with their tongues, chew cud, live in social herds, and may have horns—or be naturally hornless.
Strictly speaking, a cow is an adult female; “cattle” refers to the broader group. These ten facts focus on what the available evidence supports, without turning uncertain trivia into fact.
10 things you didn’t know about cows
1. Cows gather grass with their tongues
A cow’s upper lip is relatively immobile, so she uses her tongue to grasp a clump of grass and bite it off. Cows have incisors on the lower jaw and a tough dental pad in the corresponding upper-front area. Molars grind plant material.
2. A cow has four stomach compartments, not four separate stomachs
Cattle have one digestive system with four interconnected compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. The rumen is the largest; the abomasum is often called the true stomach. The FDA’s explanation of how cows eat grass describes this system.

3. Rumen microbes help cows digest plants
Microbes, mainly bacteria, live in the rumen and break down parts of plants that cows could not digest on their own. This lets cattle use fibrous feed and some plant by-products that people do not eat.
4. Chewing cud is a second round of chewing
Cows initially swallow feed after limited chewing. Later, they regurgitate it, chew it again, and swallow it. This process, called rumination, makes plant material more thoroughly chewed as part of digestion.

5. The rumen’s size depends on the animal
The rumen is a large fermentation chamber, but its size is not the same in every cow. A technical chapter from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations gives about 100 litres as an example for adult cattle weighing 500–600 kg. That is a context-specific estimate, not a measurement for every animal.
6. Methane is a by-product of digestion
Microbes ferment plant material in the rumen, producing methane that cattle release mainly by burping. The FAO’s enteric methane explainer says cattle account for around 75 percent of global enteric methane emissions. That figure is specifically about enteric methane—not all methane or all greenhouse-gas emissions.

9. Dairy-production years are not the same as lifespan
The Smithsonian National Zoo notes that dairy cows typically produce milk for five or six years, while some continue until age 20 or older. This describes a production period and exceptions noted by the source; it should not be presented as a universal lifespan for cows.
10. Grass is a very different diet from ours
As Adam I. Orr, Ph.D., PAS, explains in an FDA educational article, “Cows, for example, have a very different digestive system than our own, and this allows them to thrive on a menu predominantly made up of grass.” Their rumen microbes and four interconnected compartments help make that diet possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do cows have upper teeth?
Cows have a tough dental pad at the front of the upper jaw rather than upper-front incisors. Their incisors are on the lower jaw, and molars grind plant material.
Do all cows have horns?
No. Some cattle are horned, while others are polled, or genetically hornless. Those are different conditions.
Why do cows chew cud?
Cows regurgitate partially digested feed and chew it again. This rumination makes plant material more thoroughly chewed as part of digestion.
Do cows burp methane?
Yes. Methane is produced during rumen fermentation and released mainly through burping. The FAO’s estimate of around 75 percent refers to global enteric methane emissions, not all greenhouse-gas emissions.
