How Much Fish Food Do Tilapia Need? Feeding Rates by Size

Estimate total tilapia biomass, then apply a daily rate matched to fish size and culture system. FAO’s intensive-culture reference ranges decline from 30–10% for early fry to 2–1.5% for fish over 250 g; semi-intensive ponds use different rates.

Tilapia feed should be calculated from the estimated total biomass of the stock, then adjusted for fish size and culture system. As an intensive-culture reference, FAO rates decline from 30–10% of biomass per day for 0–1 g fry to 2–1.5% for fish over 250 g; semi-intensive ponds use a different schedule.

These are starting guides, not universal prescriptions. Estimate biomass, choose a schedule that fits the fish and system, and observe feeding response and conditions before adjusting the ration.

Key takeaways

  • Calculate the daily ration from total live fish biomass, not fish count or tank size alone.
  • FAO intensive-culture rates generally decline as fish grow, from 30–10% for 0–1 g fry to 2–1.5% for fish over 250 g.
  • Semi-intensive ponds have different rates because natural food and production conditions differ.
  • Feed particles should grow with the fish, from powder and fine crumble to larger pellets.
  • Temperature, oxygen, stress, natural food, and fish response can require changing the planned ration.

How much fish food do tilapia need by size?

There is no single daily feed amount for every tilapia stock. The following FAO intensive-culture schedule is a reference for formulated feed; actual rates depend on system, fish size, and conditions.

Fish size Daily ration as % of biomass Feed form and approximate particle size Typical frequency in the intensive table
Early fry, 0–1 g 30–10% Powder, 0.2–1 mm 8 times daily in tanks and ponds
Fry, 1–5 g 10–6% Crumble, 1–1.5 mm 4 times daily
Fingerling, 5–20 g 6–4% Floating or sinking pellet, 1.5–2 mm Often 2–4 times daily; varies by system
Juvenile, 20–100 g 4–3% Floating or sinking pellet, about 2 mm 2 times daily
Grower, 100–250 g 3–2% Floating or sinking pellet, about 3 mm 2 times daily in tanks and ponds
Larger grower, over 250 g 2–1.5% Floating or sinking pellet, about 4 mm 2 times daily in tanks

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) publishes this intensive-culture schedule as a guide, not a fixed rule. Its table distinguishes cages, tanks, and ponds, and some details vary by system.

Semi-intensive pond rates differ

For semi-intensive ponds, FAO gives different reference rates: 15–10% for 0–1 g fry, 10–5% for 1–5 g fry, 5–3% for 5–20 g fingerlings, 3–2% for 20–100 g juveniles, and 2% for growers above 100 g. These figures reflect a different production context and should not be substituted for an intensive-system schedule without considering natural food and local conditions.

How do you calculate the daily tilapia feed amount?

Multiply the stock’s estimated total biomass by the selected daily ration percentage.

Daily feed = total fish biomass × feeding rate

  1. Weigh a representative sample of fish and estimate the average weight.
  2. Multiply the estimated average weight by the number of fish to estimate total biomass.
  3. Convert the biomass to the same weight unit you will use for feed.
  4. Multiply biomass by the daily percentage expressed as a decimal.
  5. Divide the daily total among the planned feedings.
  6. Re-estimate biomass as the fish grow and observe how much feed they consume.

For example, if the estimated stock biomass is 10 kg and the selected ration is 3%, the daily amount is 10 kg × 0.03 = 0.30 kg, or 300 g of feed for the day. Divide that total among the day’s meals.

Pro Pack 4000 Tilapia Food - 4 Pounds
  • New fresh product - All of our pro packs contain newly manufactured tilapia feed.
  • Perfect for aquaponics fish - Products do not contain ingredients that will cloud system water or make it smell foul if properly used.
  • Professional tilapia farming feed - Produces higher filet yield during the final 142 days of accelerated growth before harvesting.
  • Complete feeding instructions - Contains day-by-day feeding instructions with the exact amounts to feed your tilapia in grams as well as how to solve common tilapia feeding problems.

FAO’s small-farmer manual recommends estimating total pond fish weight to calculate the daily ration, including by randomly catching and weighing a few fish. Weighing feed is more reliable than relying on an uncalibrated scoop.

How often should you feed tilapia?

Feeding frequency depends on size and system. FAO’s intensive table lists eight daily feedings for early fry and four for 1–5 g fry; larger fish are commonly fed twice daily in tanks and ponds. Its general warmwater-culture guidance also describes reducing fry feedings from around six daily in intensive culture to three daily for grow-out fish.

Use the frequency in the schedule that best matches your system, and split the daily ration into measured meals. Watch the fish during feeding; if pellets remain uneaten, do not add more to that meal.

What is the best food for tilapia?

Use a formulated feed suitable for tilapia and the fish’s life stage, with particles small enough for the fish to eat. FAO’s intensive schedule moves from powder and crumble for fry to progressively larger pellets for growers.

For example, the schedule lists powder around 0.2–1 mm for early fry, crumble around 1–1.5 mm for 1–5 g fry, and pellets around 1.5–2 mm for 5–20 g fingerlings. Larger fish move to roughly 2, 3, and 4 mm pellets across the larger size bands. The right particle size and feed form depend on fish size and system; the research does not establish a universally best brand.

Why do temperature, oxygen, and stress change the feeding rate?

Tilapia consumption can decrease when water temperature or oxygen falls and during stress, including disease or transport. FAO advises reducing the ration under such conditions and cautions that feeding rates also depend on fish size, stocking density, pond productivity, water quality, temperature, and feed quality.

Check fish behavior and system conditions before increasing feed. In ponds, natural food availability can affect how much formulated feed is appropriate; in intensive systems, monitor fish response and avoid leaving uneaten feed.

How can you tell whether the ration needs adjusting?

Observe feed consumption and fish condition. Uneaten feed indicates the amount offered may exceed current consumption; poor growth or condition may signal a problem, but check system conditions and natural food as well as the ration before changing it.

Adjust cautiously rather than making a large one-time change. FAO notes that food intake as a percentage of body weight is inversely related to fish size, and that no hard-and-fast feeding rate applies to every stock and system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I feed tilapia per day?

Estimate the stock’s total biomass, select a daily rate appropriate to fish size and culture system, and multiply the two. For example, at 3% of a 10 kg stock’s biomass, the reference amount is 300 g for the day.

Do tilapia feeding rates change as fish grow?

Yes. FAO’s intensive-culture table shows the percentage of biomass fed per day generally declining as fish grow, from 30–10% for 0–1 g fry to 2–1.5% above 250 g.

Are the same feeding rates right for ponds and tanks?

No. Intensive tanks, cages, and ponds have different contexts, and semi-intensive ponds use a different schedule. Choose a reference that matches the production system and account for natural food and conditions.

How often should I feed tilapia?

In FAO’s intensive table, early fry are fed eight times daily and 1–5 g fry four times daily. Larger fish are commonly fed twice daily in tanks and ponds; frequency can vary by system and stage.

What size pellets should tilapia eat?

Use powder or fine crumble for fry, then progressively larger pellets as fish grow. FAO’s intensive table lists about 1.5–2 mm pellets for 5–20 g fingerlings, around 2 mm for 20–100 g fish, about 3 mm for 100–250 g growers, and about 4 mm above 250 g.
