For a healthy dog that welcomes touch, begin with slow, gentle strokes along the back and sides, following the direction of the coat. Let your dog’s body language determine whether you continue or try another area, and stop if they move away or seem uncomfortable. Avoid massaging wounds, infected skin, tumors, unstable fractures, or recent surgical incisions. If your dog is ill, injured, in pain, or recovering from surgery, ask a veterinarian before massaging them.
Where do dogs like to be massaged the most?
Many dogs are comfortable with gentle touch along the back and sides, but there is no body map that suits every dog. Some welcome contact on their neck, head, or legs; others dislike it, especially around the face or feet. Start where your dog already enjoys being petted rather than assuming a particular spot will feel good.
Start with gentle strokes
Choose a calm setting and a surface where your dog will not slip, such as carpet, a yoga mat, or a dog bed. Use a relaxed, open hand to make slow, light-to-medium strokes along the back and sides, following the coat. Keep the touch comfortable and unhurried.
If your dog remains relaxed, you can try another area they seem comfortable with. Keep the session simple: deeper kneading, skin rolling, and tapping are distinct techniques, not necessary steps in an ordinary comfort massage. Ask your veterinary team before trying a specific therapeutic technique.

Let your dog leave
Your dog should be free to change position or walk away. Moving off, becoming restless, or showing other signs of stress are reasons to ease off or stop—not to hold the dog in place or press harder. As canine massage and rehabilitation therapist Dr. Sarah Blotevogel puts it, “While massage can work to calm and relax a dog, if they are clearly showing signs of stress, and I’m going to make that worse, then I’m not going to force it.”
Which areas should I avoid when massaging my dog?
Do not apply massage pressure directly over an open wound, infected area, tumor, unstable fracture, or recent surgical incision. A painful reaction is not a reason to work more firmly on the spot. Stop and ask your veterinarian what, if any, touch is appropriate.

Veterinary guidance is also important before massage when a dog has acute inflammation, a burn, a suspected blood clot, a blood-clotting problem, uncontrolled pain, significant illness, or another condition that could make touch unsafe. Fragile or ill patients may need shorter, gentler treatment with less pressure; whether massage is suitable should be decided with the veterinary team.
Is it OK to give my dog a massage?
A gentle, dog-led session can be a way to offer calming contact to a healthy dog that enjoys it. It is not a way to diagnose a sore area or treat an unexplained lump, injury, or illness. If your dog has a new painful area, swelling, wound, recent injury or surgery, suspected clotting issue, cancer, or significant illness, pause and contact a veterinarian before proceeding.

Massage is sometimes used as a supportive soft-tissue approach, but evidence of benefit is limited. AKC and PetMD report a 2021 study involving 527 dogs with chronic musculoskeletal pain; the reported improvement came from observations and owner reports, and the study lacked a non-treatment comparison group. Those findings do not establish that massage works for every dog or replace examination, prescribed medication, or rehabilitation.

Begin with your veterinarian if you are considering massage for a diagnosed condition, pain, injury, or recovery from surgery. The veterinary team can advise whether it is appropriate and whether a trained practitioner should be involved. Practitioner credentials and regulation requirements vary by location, so check local requirements and ask how the practitioner coordinates with your dog’s veterinary team.
