Identify the fish and where it was caught before applying fishing advice or regulations; Pacific and Atlantic hakes are not routine shore-fishing targets, while southern kingfish commonly inhabit surf zones and shallow coastal water.
For a reader asking “what fish is whiting?” the location and context matter. The sections below distinguish the main fish called whiting and explain what the available evidence supports about their identification, habitat, and recreational fishing.
Whiting fish types: what fish is whiting?
Whiting can refer to fish from different families and fisheries. NOAA uses whiting for Atlantic silver hake and, in management terminology, a grouping that includes offshore hake; Pacific whiting is Pacific hake. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) lists southern kingfish as also known as whiting.
| Name used | Scientific name and family | Region and context | Identification and habitat | Recreational fishing context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pacific whiting or Pacific hake | Merluccius productus, hake | U.S. and Canadian West Coast | Silvery body, black speckles on the back, and black inside the mouth; schools in midwater offshore | NOAA says recreational fishers do not target it, though they sometimes catch it incidentally |
| Atlantic whiting or silver hake | Merluccius bilinearis, hake | Northwest Atlantic; NOAA’s fishery extends from Maine to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina | A hake; a NOAA legacy guide describes a long body, flat-topped head, large eyes and mouth, and no lower-jaw barbels | NOAA says recreational fishers do not typically target it and may catch it incidentally |
| Southern kingfish, also called whiting in Florida | Menticirrhus americanus, croaker family | Florida coastal and recreational usage | Grayish-brown back, silvery sides and belly, diagonal dark blotches, and a lower-jaw barbel; common in beach surf and shallow coastal water | Its surf-zone habitat makes it relevant to shore anglers; the inspected sources do not establish a specific bait or rig recipe |
The name alone does not establish species, habitat, or rules. Use the scientific name and an official regional identification source when possible. NOAA’s silver hake page also explains that “southern whiting” in its management terminology combines southern silver hake and offshore hake.

Is whiting a saltwater fish?
The fish commonly called whiting in this guide are marine or coastal fish, but the name covers different species and habitats. Southern kingfish occurs in surf zones and shallow coastal water; Pacific whiting schools offshore in midwater; and Atlantic silver hake belongs to a Northwest Atlantic fishery. Do not assume that advice for one applies to the others.
How can you identify Florida’s southern kingfish?
FWC identifies southern kingfish by its grayish-brown back, silvery sides and belly, seven to eight indistinct diagonal dark blotches, and a barbel on the lower jaw. It grows up to 19 inches and is common in beach surf zones; it also occurs in shallow coastal water with muddy-sand bottoms, high-salinity bays, and estuaries.
FWC distinguishes similar kingfish by additional marks: Gulf kingfish has a blackish tip on the caudal fin, while northern kingfish has a distinct V-shaped mark above the pectoral fins. Markings can be indistinct, so compare the whole fish with the official state profile rather than relying on a common name or one feature.

Where do the different whiting fish live?
Pacific whiting ranges from southern Baja California and the Gulf of California to the Gulf of Alaska. NOAA describes it as a semi-pelagic schooling fish usually found in midwater, commonly at depths of 164–1,640 feet; adults can occur deeper than 3,000 feet and far offshore. Its coastal stock is distinct from stocks in central-south Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia.

Atlantic silver hake occurs in the Northwest Atlantic fishery described by NOAA, from Maine to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. A legacy NOAA guide gives a historical range along the continental shelf from Newfoundland Banks to Cape Hatteras; that older source is useful for historical identification context, not current regulations or abundance.
Southern kingfish is the whiting most directly relevant to surf anglers in Florida. FWC describes it in beach surf zones and shallow coastal habitats, including muddy-sand bottoms, bays, and estuaries.

How do you catch whiting?
First identify which fish and region the word “whiting” refers to. The available official sources support describing southern kingfish’s surf habitat, but they do not establish a tested or authoritative bait, hook, rod, or rig recipe. NOAA says recreational fishers do not target Pacific whiting or silver hake as a rule; they may catch them incidentally while fishing for other species.
- Identify the fish and location: Check whether the fish is Pacific whiting, Atlantic silver hake, or a regional name for southern kingfish.
- Consult a regional fish guide: Compare the fish’s marks and anatomy with an official source before deciding what it is.
- Use advice for that fishery: Do not transfer commercial midwater-trawl practices or hake guidance to shore fishing for kingfish.
- Check current local rules: Verify the applicable species, waterbody, license, season, size, bag, and gear rules before fishing or retaining a fish.
NOAA reports that Pacific whiting is harvested commercially primarily with midwater trawls. That is commercial-fishery context, not a recreational shore-fishing setup. The inspected sources do not support recommending a particular kingfish bait or rig as an authoritative method.
What regulations apply to whiting?
There is no single rule for every fish called whiting. Regulations depend on the exact species, jurisdiction, and water. NOAA says there are currently no recreational possession, size, or gear restrictions for silver hake caught recreationally in federal waters, but that federal statement does not establish rules for state waters, southern kingfish, or Pacific whiting.

Check the current official rules for the species and location you are fishing; consult Florida regulations separately for Florida kingfish.

Eating and market descriptions also depend on which fish is meant. The name “whiting” on a label does not by itself identify the species, so check the product’s species information rather than assuming fish sold under this name all have the same source or characteristics.

No. Pacific whiting is Pacific hake, Merluccius productus; Atlantic whiting commonly means silver hake, Merluccius bilinearis. They have different ranges and fishing contexts.
Can you catch whiting from shore?
Southern kingfish, called whiting in Florida, commonly inhabits beach surf zones and shallow coastal water. NOAA says recreational fishers do not target Pacific whiting or silver hake, though incidental catches can occur.
How do I know which whiting I caught?
