Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo feed birds across the year, plant a mix of locally suitable fruiting trees and shrubs whose crops ripen in different seasons. Serviceberry, mulberry, elderberry, and blueberry are summer examples; dogwoods and viburnums provide fall fruit; and winterberry, bayberry, crabapple, and sumac can offer fruit that persists into colder months.
There is no single best berry plant for every yard: fruiting times, growing needs, and native ranges vary by species and region. Gardeners also use “berries” broadly for several kinds of bird-eaten fruit, not as a strict botanical description.
How to choose berries for birds
Plan for a sequence of fruit rather than relying on a single large crop. Summer fruit can feed birds during breeding season, fall fruit can serve migrating and resident birds, and persistent fruit can help winter residents and early-returning migrants. Exact timing varies with species and location, so treat seasons as broad patterns.
Before buying, check the plant’s scientific name, regional native range, mature size, soil and moisture needs, sunlight, and whether it needs a pollinator. A local native-plant nursery can help match a species to your yard. Trees and shrubs can also provide cover or nesting sites, while native vegetation may support insects birds eat.

| Plant | Broad fruiting season | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) | Late spring or summer | Cornell Lab lists robins, waxwings, cardinals, vireos, tanagers, and grosbeaks among birds attracted to serviceberries. It can also provide nesting sites. |
| Mulberry (Morus spp.) | Summer | Cornell Lab lists robins, waxwings, and cardinals among visitors. Mulberries can be large, and fallen fruit can be messy, so consider placement. |
| Elderberry (Sambucus spp.) | Summer | A summer fruit option; choose a locally appropriate species. |
| Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) | Summer | Birds use blueberries, but regional species and growing conditions matter. |
| Red-osier or gray dogwood (Cornus spp.) | Fall | Dogwood fruit is useful to migrating songbirds; choose a species suited to your region. |
| Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) | Fall | Produces scarlet fruit and spring flowers. Cornell Lab lists robins, bluebirds, thrushes, catbirds, and cardinals among birds that use it. |

| Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) | Fall into winter | Only female plants bear fruit. For berries, plant female shrubs with at least one compatible male pollinator, following nursery guidance. It tolerates wet conditions. |
| Northern bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica) | Fall; fruit persists | Its waxy fruit can remain on the plant year-round. Cornell Lab lists Tree Swallows, catbirds, and bluebirds among visitors. |
| Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) | Fall; fruit persists into winter | Its red fruit clusters can persist into winter and are used by many bird species. |
Which plants provide food in each season?
Use the seasons as a planning guide, not a nationwide calendar. Species, weather, and region affect when fruit ripens and how long it remains.

How to plan a bird-friendly berry planting
- Start with your region: Check the scientific name and native range, and ask a local native-plant nursery for regionally suitable choices.
- Choose a seasonal sequence: Combine suitable summer plants with fall-fruiting and winter-persistent options.
- Match the site: Check mature height and spread, sunlight, soil, and moisture. Do not assume all ten plants fit a small garden.
- Check pollination needs: For winterberry fruit, include female plants and at least one compatible male pollinator as advised by the nursery.
- Plan for more than fruit: Include plants that provide cover or nesting sites, and native vegetation that can support insects birds eat.
For example, Cornell Lab describes serviceberries as food for several fruit-eating songbirds and as potential nesting sites. Its native-plant guidance also emphasizes selecting plants suited to local conditions. Regional advice matters: a plant that is native or appropriate in one area may not be the right choice elsewhere.
