Any such audio would be recordings of Colossal’s living, genetically edited wolves—not recovered sound from the extinct species.
Colossal calls Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi dire wolves. Independent accounts describe them as gray wolves with targeted edits intended to produce selected dire-wolf-associated traits, and scientists have disputed whether that constitutes de-extinction. The key distinction is between the company’s label and what the evidence establishes.
Key takeaways
- TechCrunch reported that Lamm announced a planned bioacoustics project at SXSW London in June 2025, with release anticipated “later this year.”
- The reported plan depended on tracking the animals longer and assessing whether acoustic features remained consistent; it was not a firm release date.
- The dossier’s reviewed sources do not verify whether the planned audio was ultimately published or where it can be accessed. This does not prove no release exists.
- Any proposed recordings would be of living Colossal animals, not a recovered recording or a fossil-derived reconstruction of an extinct dire wolf’s sound.
- Colossal uses the “dire wolf” label, while independent scientific descriptions characterize the animals as genetically edited gray wolves.
What did Colossal announce about dire-wolf howls?
At a SXSW London panel, Colossal co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm described a bioacoustics project to map different types of dire-wolf howls. TechCrunch reported on June 3, 2025 that Lamm said, “We’re going to release that later this year.” The phrase referred to 2025, not to a current release forecast.
The report described a conditional plan: Lamm wanted to track the animals for a few more months and release the project if their reverberations or other acoustic features stayed consistent. He also reportedly described their pitch and inflection as distinctive. That claim should be attributed to Lamm; the report did not provide measured acoustic comparisons or peer-reviewed evidence establishing that the howls are uniquely identifiable as those of the extinct species.

Did Colossal release the dire-wolf howls?
The October 7, 2026 research review did not verify publication of the planned audio, a current release page, or where listeners can access it. Colossal’s current dire-wolf page and its 2025 retrospective describe the animals and project updates, but the reviewed retrospective does not confirm that the promised howl project was released. This limited review is not proof that no later release exists.
For a reliable answer, look for a direct Colossal announcement or an official page that identifies the audio as the bioacoustics project Lamm discussed. Do not treat a video of the animals vocalizing as confirmation that the planned project was published unless the source identifies it as such.
What would the audio represent?
The proposed audio would be recordings and analysis of living animals produced by Colossal. TechCrunch reported that the first two began howling at three weeks and that Colossal was using AI to help monitor behavior and study what it called “wolf linguistics.” The plan was not to recover a sound from fossils or reconstruct a recording of an extinct dire wolf.

A recording could document how these animals vocalize and how their sounds develop. Without acoustic data and appropriate comparisons, it would not establish that their howls match those of extinct dire wolves. The reviewed sources report no statistic validating how accurately the animals’ howls differ acoustically from gray wolves or other canids.

Colossal presents Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi as dire wolves. However, Live Science reported chief science officer Beth Shapiro saying, “Our animals are grey wolves with 20 edits that are cloned.” The Associated Press described gray wolf cells modified at 20 sites, and the University of California said the pups are not exact replicas but have many distinctive traits. The evidence supports describing them as genetically edited gray wolves intended to express selected dire-wolf traits, while making clear that Colossal uses a different label.
| Question | What the sources say | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| What did Lamm announce? | A planned bioacoustics project to map different howls, with a hoped-for release “later” in 2025 | A historical, conditional plan—not confirmation of publication |
| What animals would be recorded? | Living Colossal animals presented by the company as dire wolves | Recordings would be of those animals, not the extinct species itself |
| How were the animals described? | Gray wolves with 20 edits, according to Shapiro as reported by Live Science | Selected genetic edits do not establish an exact extinct-species replica |
| Is the audio available? | The reviewed research did not verify publication or current access | Availability remains unresolved, not disproven |
For background on the naming dispute, the Associated Press and University of California accounts provide independent context on the genetic method and the distinction between trait resemblance and an exact replica. Colossal’s own page reflects the company’s framing, which should be attributed as such.

What should readers check before sharing a recording?
- Confirm that the source is an official Colossal announcement or a page directly identified by the company.
- Check whether the recording is identified as the bioacoustics project Lamm discussed, rather than simply a video of the animals vocalizing.
- Look for the recording date and sample context so listeners can understand which animals and stage of development it documents.
- Distinguish claims about the animals’ sound from evidence that the sound matches an extinct dire wolf; the reviewed sources do not establish such a match.
- Check any stated access or redistribution terms before reposting audio. The reviewed sources do not establish licensing terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Colossal release dire-wolf howls later this year?
Lamm said in June 2025 that Colossal planned to release its bioacoustics project “later this year,” meaning 2025. The plan was conditional, and the October 2026 research review did not verify that the audio was published.
Did Colossal release the dire-wolf howls?
The reviewed sources do not confirm publication or current access. That leaves availability unresolved; it does not prove no release exists. Look for a direct company announcement identifying the project.
Would the recording be an authentic sound of an extinct dire wolf?
No. The proposed recordings concern living animals produced by Colossal, not a recovered recording or fossil-derived sound reconstruction of the extinct species.

Are Colossal’s animals really dire wolves?
Colossal uses that label, but Live Science, the Associated Press, and the University of California describe the animals as genetically edited gray wolves with selected traits. Whether that amounts to de-extinction is disputed.
Did scientists verify that the howls match extinct dire wolves?
The reviewed sources provide no measured acoustic comparison or peer-reviewed evidence that the animals’ howls match those of the extinct species. Lamm’s reported description of distinctive pitch and inflection should be attributed to him.
The bottom line
Lamm’s June 2025 statement verifies that Colossal planned a bioacoustics project and hoped to release it later that year; it does not verify publication. As of the October 7, 2026 research review, the planned audio’s publication and access remain unresolved. Any recording would be of living, genetically edited gray wolves that Colossal calls dire wolves—not the sound of the extinct species itself.
