What Freshwater Fish Are Compatible With a 37-Gallon Tank?

A 37-gallon tank can support a peaceful community, but its capacity depends on the fish’s adult size, social needs, temperament, water preferences, and the aquarium’s footprint and care routine. Use species-specific guidance and stock gradually rather than relying on a universal fish-count formula.

A 37-gallon freshwater tank can support a peaceful community, but gallons alone cannot determine which fish or how many will fit. Choose fish only after comparing their adult size, social needs, temperament, water preferences, swimming space, and care requirements.

Celestial pearl danios are one possible small schooling fish: Aquarium Co-Op recommends a group of 10–15 and at least a 20-gallon aquarium for that group. That species-specific guidance does not establish a complete stocking plan for every 37-gallon tank.

How to choose compatible fish

Compatibility is about more than whether fish seem peaceful at the store. A suitable community requires overlapping environmental needs and enough space for each species’ adult form and behavior. The exact aquarium footprint, filtration, maintenance routine, and source-water chemistry also affect what can be kept safely.

What to compare Why it matters
Adult size and activity Fish sold as juveniles may grow substantially, so plan for their adult size and swimming needs. Aquarium Co-Op notes that some fish may double or triple in size by maturity.
Social group Some species need a group or shoal. Group size also affects the tank’s total waste load.
Temperament Aggression, territorial behavior, and fin-nipping can make otherwise similar-sized fish incompatible.
Water and flow Tankmates need compatible temperature, water type, and current preferences.
Space and swimming zone The gallon rating does not describe the tank’s length, width, or the space available to fish with different swimming habits.
Care routine and waste load Filtration, feeding, plants, and water changes affect how much stock the system can support.

A documented schooling-fish option

Celestial pearl danios

Aquarium Co-Op describes celestial pearl danios as peaceful community fish and recommends keeping 10–15 in an aquarium of at least 20 gallons. This makes them a possible candidate for consideration in a 37-gallon tank, not a guarantee that they will suit every tankmate or setup.

Before adding them, compare their care requirements with the other fish, confirm that the tank has suitable space and water conditions, and account for the group’s contribution to the total waste load. Do not infer that the minimum tank size for this species establishes the capacity of the entire aquarium.

Are gouramis or bottom-dwelling fish suitable?

These can be conditional possibilities rather than automatic additions. OATA says honey and dwarf gouramis can mix with community fish, while noting that some delicate gourami types may not suit standard communities and that larger gouramis have different space needs. Check the exact species’ adult size, temperament, social needs, and water preferences before planning a pairing.

For any proposed bottom-dweller or centerpiece fish, verify its adult form, behavior, and environmental requirements from species-specific care guidance. The dossier does not establish a universal combination of a particular schooling fish, bottom-dweller, and gourami for every 37-gallon aquarium.

How many fish can go in a 37-gallon tank?

There is no reliable universal fish count for a 37-gallon aquarium. OATA says it is not possible to state exactly how many fish an aquarium can hold because body size, species needs, water parameters, and compatibility vary.

Aquarium Co-Op says many schooling species prefer groups of at least 6–10, but that is general guidance, not a minimum for every species. Its discussion of the “one inch per gallon” rule also cautions that a simple formula leaves out differences in space and social behavior. Use species-specific group recommendations and assess the complete aquarium rather than adding up fish lengths.

Prepare the aquarium before adding fish

Cycle the aquarium and monitor water quality before stocking. OATA gives zero mg/L ammonia and zero mg/L nitrite as freshwater aquarium benchmarks. It describes the filter as mature when ammonia and nitrite have dropped to zero and remain there continually, and recommends adding fish gradually so beneficial bacteria can adjust to increased waste.

Use a freshwater aquarium test kit to check relevant water parameters, including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and hardness. OATA recommends regular testing; test especially carefully during setup and after adding fish. Water-change needs depend on the species, tank, stocking, and other conditions.

How to stock a 37-gallon tank gradually

  1. Check the aquarium and equipment. Confirm the actual footprint, filtration, and care routine you can maintain.
  2. Test the source water. Compare its parameters with the needs of the species you are considering.
  3. Cycle the aquarium. Do not add fish until ammonia and nitrite are zero and remain stable.
  4. Choose one suitable schooling group. Follow that species’ group-size guidance and account for adult size and waste load.
  5. Observe and test after the addition. Check fish behavior and water quality before deciding whether the tank is ready for any further stock.
  6. Reassess every proposed addition. Compare temperament, social needs, adult size, water preferences, and available swimming space.

Aquarium Co-Op suggests checking nitrate weekly for 2–3 weeks after adding a group and keeping it below 40 ppm in its example method. Treat that as Aquarium Co-Op’s example guidance, not a universal regulatory limit or a substitute for species-specific care.

FAQ

How many fish can I put in a 37-gallon aquarium?

There is no universal number. The safe population depends on adult size, group needs, compatibility, water conditions, swimming space, filtration, and maintenance.

Can celestial pearl danios live in a 37-gallon tank?

They are one possible candidate. Aquarium Co-Op recommends 10–15 celestial pearl danios and at least a 20-gallon aquarium for that group, but compatibility with other fish still needs to be assessed.

Is the one-inch-per-gallon rule reliable?

No single fish-length formula can account for adult size, behavior, social-group needs, swimming space, or waste load. Use species-specific care guidance and assess the whole aquarium.

When is an aquarium ready for fish?

OATA gives zero ammonia and zero nitrite as benchmarks and says the filter is mature when those values remain at zero continually. Continue testing and add fish gradually.

Can I add more fish if nitrate is below 40 ppm?

Not on that figure alone. Aquarium Co-Op uses below 40 ppm nitrate in an example stocking method, but the safe population also depends on species needs, compatibility, and other water-quality and care factors.
