Does a Cleaner Fish Benefit From Cleaning?

Cleaner fish benefit from cleaning by gaining food, especially ectoparasites. Clients can benefit too, but the relationship may be neutral or harmful when cleaners take mucus, scales, or tissue instead.

Yes. A cleaner fish benefits from cleaning because it gains food, usually ectoparasites and sometimes other material from client fish. Clients can benefit from parasite removal, but the relationship is conditional: it may be neutral or harmful when cleaners take mucus, scales, or tissue instead.

Cleaning is a feeding strategy, not unconditional altruism. The outcome depends on the cleaner and client species, local conditions, and the availability of parasites.

Key takeaways

  • The cleaner’s clearest benefit is food, including ectoparasites and sometimes mucus, scales, or tissue.
  • Clients can benefit through parasite removal and, in some cases, improved growth.
  • Cleaning is not always mutualistic: cleaners may take client material instead of parasites.
  • High parasite availability tends to benefit clients more and reduce cleaner cheating; low availability can make the interaction neutral or parasitic for clients.
  • Results vary by species, location, time, and study design.

Why do cleaner fish clean other fish?

Cleaner fish clean other fish as a way to feed. They visit cleaning stations, or let larger fish approach, and pick edible material from clients’ skin, gills, or mouths.

Ectoparasites—parasites living on the outside of a fish—are one food source. Cleaners may also consume dead tissue, scales, or mucus. That creates a conflict: clients benefit when parasites are removed, while cleaners may also seek other material.

The best-studied example is the bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus). Research reported in PLoS ONE in 2011 found that these wrasse inspected an average of 2,297 clients and consumed 1,218 ectoparasites per day.

What does the cleaner fish get out of the deal?

The cleaner gets a dependable feeding opportunity: a cleaning station brings potential meals to a predictable place. Its immediate reward is food, but that food is not always parasites. Cleaners may take mucus, scales, or tissue, which can cost the client.

The two fish therefore have partly aligned interests. The client wants parasites removed at little cost; the cleaner wants food. Clients can reject or switch away from poor-quality cleaners, giving cleaners an incentive to retain clients.

Does the client fish benefit from cleaning?

Clients can benefit, especially when cleaners remove many parasites without taking too much of the client’s own material.

Alexandra S. Grutter’s 1999 Nature study found that cleaner fish reduced parasite abundance, producing a 4.5-fold difference within 12 hours. See the 1999 Nature report.

Long-term evidence also links cleaner presence with client growth. In an eight-year field experiment, reefs where cleaner wrasse were repeatedly removed had client damselfish with reduced growth and more parasitic copepods than control reefs. Cleaned Pomacentrus moluccensis were 27% larger than nearby fish of the same species, according to the 2011 Proceedings of the Royal Society B study by Waldie, Blomberg, Cheney, Goldizen, and Grutter.

Parasite removal and improved growth are different outcomes. Evidence of parasite reduction alone does not establish improved overall fitness; researchers must measure outcomes such as growth, survival, or reproduction.

Is cleaner-fish cleaning always mutualism?

No. Cleaning is conditional mutualism: both fish can benefit, but the client’s outcome depends on what the cleaner eats and local conditions.

Cleaning pattern What the cleaner obtains Possible client outcome Interpretation
Parasite-rich cleaning Mainly ectoparasites Parasite burden falls Mutualistic
Low-parasite cleaning More mucus or scales Little parasite benefit and possible tissue cost Neutral or parasitic
Mixed cleaning Parasites and client material Depends on the balance of removal and damage Conditional

A study of Caribbean cleaning gobies and longfin damselfish found that outcomes changed with ectoparasite availability. At sites with more parasites, cleaning caused greater parasite reductions and cleaners consumed less non-parasitic material. Where parasites were less available, cleaners removed more scales and mucus, reducing or reversing the client’s net benefit. The 2006 Proceedings of the Royal Society B study concluded that cleaning could be mutualistic in one setting but neutral or parasitic in another.

Do cleaner wrasse really remove parasites?

Yes. Cleaner wrasse, including Labroides dimidiatus, remove ectoparasites from client fish. But they are not restricted to parasites and are not universally beneficial to every client.

“Cleaner fish” describes a role played by different taxa, including wrasse and gobies; cleaning systems can also involve shrimp and other cleaners. Findings about one cleaner-client pair should not automatically be generalized to every system. A 2006 Journal of Animal Ecology synthesis describes variation across taxa and environments.

Why do client fish seek cleaner fish?

Parasite infection can prompt clients to seek cleaners. In an experiment, parasitized fish spent more time near cleaner fish than unparasitized fish and preferred cleaners over control fish. The 2001 Proceedings of the Royal Society B study supports parasite infection as a reason for cleaning-seeking behavior.

How do cleaner fish and clients control cheating?

Clients can monitor cleaners and choose whether to continue an interaction. They may reject a cleaner or leave when it takes valuable mucus or tissue. Cleaners, in turn, benefit from attracting and retaining clients.

Research found that client fish can evaluate cleaner behavior and that cleaners alter their feeding when potential clients are watching. A 2006 Nature study examined partner choice, observation, and cleaner behavior. Its editorial summary described cleaners removing ectoparasites in a mutual relationship, while also noting that cleaners can cheat by feeding on client mucus.

Why do studies sometimes disagree about the benefits?

Studies measure different outcomes over different time scales and in different settings. A short-term parasite measurement, for example, does not answer the same question as a long-term growth experiment.

Study approach What it can show What it may miss
Short-term parasite measurement Whether cleaning quickly changes parasite abundance Long-term effects on growth, survival, or reproduction
Long-term cleaner-removal experiment Whether cleaner presence affects client growth or parasite levels Behavior during individual cleaning events
Community survey or removal study Changes in total fish abundance, species richness, or community structure Benefits or costs to individual fish
Cross-location comparison How parasite supply and local conditions alter outcomes Whether every species behaves the same way

A six-month cleaner-removal study found no detectable effect on total reef-fish abundance, species richness, or community structure. That study record in PubMed does not rule out individual parasite-removal or growth benefits: community-level and individual-health measurements answer different questions.

Can cleaner fish spread parasites?

Cleaner fish may potentially transmit parasites between clients because they interact with many fish. A 2022 Journal of Experimental Biology study described cleaners as potential “super-spreaders.” This identifies a possible transmission risk, not evidence that every cleaning interaction spreads disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do cleaner fish clean other fish?

They clean other fish primarily to obtain food, especially ectoparasites. They may also eat mucus, scales, dead tissue, or other material.

Do both fish benefit from cleaning?

Both can benefit when the cleaner removes parasites. The client may receive little benefit or suffer a net cost if the cleaner takes mucus, scales, or tissue instead.

Is cleaner-fish cleaning mutualism or parasitism?

It can be mutualistic, neutral, or parasitic from the client’s perspective. The outcome depends partly on parasite availability and what the cleaner consumes.

Can cleaner fish spread parasites?

They may provide opportunities for parasite transmission through repeated contact with clients, but the reported finding is a potential risk, not proof that every cleaning interaction spreads disease.

The Bottom Line

A cleaner fish benefits from cleaning because it gains food, most clearly in the form of ectoparasites. The client may also benefit, but cleaning is conditional mutualism rather than guaranteed altruism: clients benefit most when parasites are available and cleaners remove them instead of taking mucus, scales, or tissue.
