Dog seizures can cause whole-body convulsions or subtler signs such as facial twitching, staring, or repetitive chewing movements. If your dog is seizing, clear nearby hazards, start a timer, keep your hands away from its mouth, and do not restrain it. A seizure lasting more than five minutes or multiple seizures within 24 hours is an emergency; arrange veterinary assessment after a first suspected seizure even if it stops quickly.

When a dog seizure is an emergency

Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately if the active seizure lasts more than five minutes or your dog has multiple seizures within 24 hours. Ongoing seizure activity requires urgent veterinary care.

Do not wait for a seizure to stop if your dog is deteriorating or you are concerned about its safety. The five-minute threshold applies to active seizure activity, not the recovery period afterward.

What a seizure means—and what it does not mean

A seizure is an episode of abnormal brain activity. It is a sign, not automatically a diagnosis of epilepsy. Seizure-like events can have different causes, including epilepsy, metabolic illness, toxins, trauma, or structural brain disease. Balance or cardiac events can also be mistaken for seizures.

What dog seizure signs look like

Some dogs show behavior changes before a seizure, such as restlessness, nervousness, hiding, or seeking their owner. Signs during the event vary, and these descriptions alone cannot diagnose a seizure.

Pattern Possible signs
Generalized Sudden collapse, reduced awareness or loss of consciousness, stiffening followed by involuntary limb movements or paddling, salivation, vocalization, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
Focal Repeated twitching of a facial or limb area, unusual chewing or snapping movements, staring, or repetitive behavior. Awareness may be partly preserved.

A dog may also have a post-seizure recovery period. It can be confused, disoriented, restless, pace, salivate, or be temporarily blind. Signs and recovery vary between dogs.

What to do while your dog is having a seizure

  1. Start timing the event. Note when the abnormal activity begins and ends.
  2. Clear nearby hazards. Move breakable, sharp, or unstable objects away if you can do so safely.
  3. Do not restrain your dog. Let the involuntary movements happen without holding the dog down.
  4. Keep your hands and objects away from the mouth. A dog is not swallowing its tongue, and you could be bitten or injure the dog.
  5. Record video if safe. Do not risk injury or delay urgent veterinary care to get footage.

After the seizure

Allow your dog to recover in a quiet, safe space. Confusion or disorientation can persist, and behavior may be unpredictable, so give the dog room and remain cautious.

  • NOTE: 1.The soft tip must be completely sleeved on the top, ensure that it will not fall off during normal use. 2.Ensure that the tip and injection tube are in the same straight line, so that the push rod can smoothly impact on pill and push it out. 3.Do not stick the soft tips into pet's throat to prevent the tips from getting stuck in the throat. The correct use is to put the soft tip to the posterior position of tongue, then use the push rod to push out the pill and let the pet swallow it by himself. 4.Do not stuff the pill tightly into the soft tip, avoiding the pill not being able to be pushed out or the soft tip falling off with the pill. Gently clamping it is correct.
