Wetlands support mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, but the animals present depend on region, water conditions, and season. Beavers can change streams and create wetland habitat, while American alligators dig refuge ponds in the Okefenokee; frogs and migratory birds also rely on wetlands for important life stages.
There is no single animal list that fits every marsh, swamp, bog, floodplain, or coastal wetland. Some wildlife lives there year-round, while other animals visit to feed, breed, migrate, or find refuge.
What animals live in wetlands?
Wetland communities include many kinds of animals. The U.S. Geological Survey-hosted 2025 overview describes wetlands as supporting invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, and mammals. Which species occur depends on location, wetland type, salinity, water depth, and seasonal conditions.
Wetlands can flood, dry out, or have low-oxygen, acidic, or salty water. Those conditions affect which animals can use a site and when. A seasonal wetland that appears dry at one point in the year may still provide important breeding or feeding habitat.

How beavers change wetland habitat
Beavers are herbivores. Their diet includes grasses, leaves, and aquatic plants, as well as bark and cambium at some times of year. They build dams, lodges, and canals that can change water depth and the surrounding habitat.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife describes beaver-created habitat as potentially benefiting frogs and other species. The agency also identifies possible effects such as improved water quality, downstream water control, repaired eroded channels, and reconnection of streams with floodplains. These are potential benefits, not guaranteed outcomes at every site.
What alligators do in wetlands
American alligators are associated with wetlands in the southeastern United States. Their habitat effects are especially clear in the Okefenokee, where the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes alligators digging ponds.

In that regional example, the ponds help organisms and nutrients move and provide refuge for other animals when water levels are low. The refuge animals named by the agency include gopher frogs and owls. This example should not be taken to mean alligators live in wetlands throughout North America.
Frogs, birds, and other wetland wildlife
Wetlands are primary breeding habitats for most amphibians, according to the USGS-hosted overview. Shallow water and wetland cover can support amphibians during breeding and development, though the species and conditions vary by place.
Nearly all migratory birds rely on wetlands during some part of their annual cycle, the same overview reports. Birds may use a wetland for feeding, resting, or other seasonal needs without living there year-round. Wetlands also support fish, reptiles, mammals, and invertebrates, each with different relationships to water, vegetation, prey, and shelter.

Why wetlands matter to animals and people
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes wetlands as providing essential wildlife habitat, water filtration, and water storage that can lessen and prevent storm and flood damage. Wetlands therefore support wildlife while also providing benefits to surrounding communities.
Wetlands cover just over 5 percent of the contiguous United States, or 110 million acres, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (2026). Alaska wetlands continue to be mapped, so this figure should not be read as a nationwide total. The agency also reports that more than 50 percent of threatened and endangered species rely on wetlands and associated aquatic habitat.

Habitat loss and degradation can harm wetland animals by reducing the places they use to feed, breed, shelter, and find refuge. Protecting wetland habitat helps maintain these ecological relationships.

How to observe wetland animals safely
- Observe from a distance; use binoculars or a zoom camera rather than approaching wildlife.
- Stay on marked paths where available and avoid trampling shallow pools or vegetation.
- Do not feed, touch, handle, corner, or imitate wild animals.
- Give potentially dangerous wildlife, including alligators, plenty of space and follow posted site guidance.
FAQ
What animals live in wetlands?
Wetlands support mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. The particular animals depend on location, water conditions, wetland type, and season.
Are beavers wetland animals?
Beavers use waterways and can create or expand wetland habitat by building dams, lodges, and canals. Their effects on water and habitat vary by site.
What do alligators do in wetlands?
In the Okefenokee, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service describes American alligators digging ponds that help organisms and nutrients move and give other animals refuge when water levels are low.

Are wetlands wet all year?
Not necessarily. Wetland water conditions can change, and some sites flood or dry seasonally. A wetland can remain important wildlife habitat even when it is not visibly covered with water.
Do all wetlands have the same wildlife?
No. Wildlife varies with region, water type, and seasonal conditions. A regional example such as alligators in the Okefenokee should not be generalized to every wetland.
