There is no evidence-backed universal top ten for farm dogs: the right choice depends on whether you need a dog to move livestock, guard it, or simply work alongside your family. Herding dogs work with a handler to move stock; livestock guardian dogs protect stock through independent presence and behavior. A breed label alone cannot show whether an individual dog is ready for farm life.
Choose the job before the breed
Start by identifying the animals, terrain, predator pressure, housing, and daily handling you can provide. Then look for an individual dog whose temperament and training fit those conditions.
- Herding and movement: These dogs work with a person to gather, drive, or control livestock. They need structured work and handler direction.
- Livestock guarding: Guardian breeds live with livestock and use independent behavior to deter threats. They need appropriate socialization, training, and farm-specific management.
- General farm companionship: A dog may accompany its owner around the property or take part in suitable activities without being a trained herder or livestock guardian.
Guardians are not simply large herding dogs. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes livestock guardian breeds as distinct from herding dogs and notes that guardians can protect livestock and the people tending them.
Breeds to consider by farm job
The evidence supports considering several breeds for particular roles, but does not establish a comparable, ranked top ten. These examples are starting points for assessing an individual dog, not guarantees of performance.

Herding and moving livestock
Border Collie: AKC describes the breed as a work-focused dog that needs a job, such as herding or obedience work. Consider one when you can provide structured activity and training; the breed name alone does not guarantee that a dog will work safely with your stock.
Australian Shepherd: AKC describes Australian Shepherds as smart, work-oriented, and exuberant, and includes the breed in its herding-event information. That supports considering the breed for a herding-oriented home, but event eligibility is not proof that every dog is suitable for every farm.
Pyrenean Shepherd: AKC describes this breed as an indefatigable herder and emphasizes that activity and a job are vital. Its energy needs should be part of your decision.

Other breeds appear on AKC’s list of herding-event participants, including Australian Cattle Dogs, Corgis, and Collies. Eligibility to enter an event is not a universal farm recommendation or a guarantee of an individual’s working ability.

Great Pyrenees: AKC says the breed was developed as a livestock guardian and is accustomed to working without constant direction. That independence means owners should not assume easy obedience; AKC recommends early socialization and puppy training. Coat care is another practical consideration: AKC recommends weekly brushing with a pin or slicker brush.
Anatolian Shepherd Dog: AKC describes this large breed as still being used to guard sheep and other livestock. Its breed-standard description is “loyal, independent, and reserved.” AKC cautions that insufficient socialization can contribute to excessive protectiveness or aggression toward other dogs, so plan socialization and management from the start.

AKC also lists the Komondor and Kuvasz among livestock guardian breeds. The available evidence here is not detailed enough to compare their farm tasks or management requirements, so seek breed-specific guidance before choosing either.
General farm environment and companionship
A dog does not have to be a working herder or guardian to live around a farm, but it still needs suitable training and supervision. AKC’s Farm Dog Certified test is open to all breeds and evaluates behavior in farm-like situations; it does not test herding or certify that a dog can guard livestock.

Compare the roles
| Role | Examples supported by the sources | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Move livestock with a handler | Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Pyrenean Shepherd | Work needs, handler direction, training, and the individual dog’s behavior around your stock. |
| Guard livestock independently | Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd Dog | Socialization, protective behavior, containment, livestock introduction, and your ability to manage an independent dog. |
| General farm environment | Any breed may be assessed individually | Confidence, self-control, and trust with the handler; farm-environment testing does not establish herding or guarding skill. |
How to assess a farm dog’s fit
- Write down the actual job. Decide whether you need livestock moved, protected, or simply a companion around the property.
- Match the job to the farm. Consider livestock species, terrain, predator pressure, housing, and the time you can give to training and supervision.
- Assess the individual dog. Ask about its temperament, experience, socialization, and behavior around the livestock and people it will encounter.
- Plan training and introductions. Do not assume that breed history or instinct makes a dog safe to leave with livestock. Arrange suitable, supervised introductions and seek experienced guidance.
- Consider a farm-environment assessment appropriately. AKC’s Farm Dog Certified test has 12 exercises, including proximity to penned livestock, unusual terrain, and farm objects. Its stated aim is to assess self-control, confidence, and trust with the handler; it does not test herding.
- Plan containment and everyday management. Make sure the dog’s housing and boundaries fit the property, and plan how it will be managed around livestock, visitors, and other dogs.
Care considerations
Farm suitability includes everyday care, not just work aptitude. For a Great Pyrenees, AKC recommends weekly brushing with a pin or slicker brush to help manage shedding. A slicker brush is an optional grooming tool; choose one appropriate for the individual dog’s coat.

For a guardian breed, consider how its independence and protective behavior will fit your socialization, training, and containment plan. For a herding candidate, confirm that you can provide the activity and job the dog needs. Consult a veterinarian and experienced local working-dog handlers about the needs of your dog, livestock, and area.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a herding dog and a livestock guardian dog?
A herding dog works with a handler to move livestock. A livestock guardian dog lives with stock and uses independent behavior to deter threats. The roles require different traits and management.
Does a herding breed make a good farm dog automatically?
No. Breed history and event eligibility do not guarantee that an individual dog is suitable for your farm or safe around your livestock. Assess the dog’s temperament, training, and experience in the specific setting.

No. The test assesses behavior in farm-like conditions, including self-control, confidence, and trust with the handler. It explicitly does not test herding.
What should I consider before choosing a Great Pyrenees or Anatolian Shepherd Dog?
Consider whether you can provide appropriate socialization, training, containment, and management for an independent, protective guardian. AKC specifically recommends early socialization and puppy training for the Great Pyrenees and cautions about insufficient socialization in the Anatolian Shepherd Dog.
