Hyperthyroidism is uncommon in dogs and differs from the familiar feline condition: spontaneous cases are most often associated with thyroid carcinoma. Excess levothyroxine or eating food containing too much thyroid tissue can also cause excess thyroid hormone, so a high result does not by itself mean cancer.
Ask a veterinarian to assess unexplained weight loss despite appetite, unusual excitability, increased thirst or urination, vomiting, diarrhea, a fast heart rate, or a neck mass. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose hyperthyroidism, and suspected thyroid disease should not be treated with supplements or other products at home.
What is hyperthyroidism in dogs?
Hyperthyroidism means that there is too much thyroid hormone in the body. The thyroid glands are in the neck, and their hormones help regulate the body’s metabolism. In dogs, spontaneous clinical hyperthyroidism is uncommon and is most often associated with a thyroid tumor.
Veterinarians also consider thyrotoxicosis caused by an outside source of thyroid hormone. The main causes described in dogs are:

- Thyroid carcinoma: a tumor producing excess thyroid hormone.
- Excess levothyroxine: too much thyroid-replacement medication prescribed for hypothyroidism.
- Thyroid-containing food: eating a raw diet or other food containing excessive thyroid gland tissue.
These causes need different responses. Tell your veterinarian about medications, supplements, diets, treats, and possible access to another pet’s medication.
What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism in dogs?
Possible signs include:
- weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite;
- increased appetite;
- excitability or unusual restlessness;
- increased thirst and urination;
- vomiting or diarrhea; and
- an increased heart rate.
These signs can also occur with other illnesses. They are reasons to seek veterinary assessment, not a home diagnostic checklist. A palpable neck mass is also important to have examined, particularly if it is growing or affecting swallowing or breathing.
What causes hyperthyroidism in dogs?
Thyroid carcinoma
Thyroid carcinoma is the primary cause of spontaneous canine hyperthyroidism described in the veterinary references. Merck Veterinary Manual advises that a thyroid tumor causing hyperthyroidism in a dog should be presumed to be carcinoma until proven otherwise. A veterinarian must assess the mass and the dog’s overall findings; a lump alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Excess levothyroxine
Levothyroxine is used to treat canine hypothyroidism. Too much can cause excess thyroid hormone. If your dog takes levothyroxine, do not change or stop the dose on your own; contact the prescribing veterinarian and describe the dose and timing.

Raw diets containing excessive thyroid gland tissue have also been described as a cause. Tell the veterinarian what your dog eats, including raw or fresh food, treats, and supplements, and bring packaging or ingredient information if available.
How is hyperthyroidism diagnosed in dogs?
Diagnosis relies on veterinary examination and clinical assessment together with evidence of elevated thyroid hormone concentrations. There is no symptom or single result that owners can use to distinguish a tumor from medication or food exposure.

Tell the veterinarian about your dog’s signs, weight and appetite changes, medication and supplement use, diet, and any neck swelling. The veterinarian will interpret examination and laboratory findings in that context and decide whether further assessment of a suspected mass is appropriate. Ask what the results do—and do not—show before making treatment decisions.
What is the treatment for hyperthyroidism in dogs?
Treatment depends on the cause. When a tumor is suspected, choices depend on its size, local invasion, detectable metastasis, and which treatments are available. The goal may be to control hormone-related signs, treat the tumor, or both.

| Option | Role and considerations |
|---|---|
| Correct an external exposure | If excess levothyroxine or thyroid-containing food is responsible, the veterinarian can guide changes to the medication plan or diet and assess the dog’s response. |
| Surgery | A possible tumor-directed treatment. Suitability depends on the tumor and the individual dog’s case. |
| Radiation or radioiodine | Possible tumor-directed options; availability and suitability depend on the case. |
| Chemotherapy | Another possible option for selected cases, depending on the tumor and the available treatment plan. |
| Antithyroid medication | May control the hyperthyroid state and related signs, but does not prevent tumor growth or metastasis. |
These options may be used alone or in combination, depending on the tumor’s extent and available care. A veterinarian can discuss whether referral to a specialist is appropriate. Do not give supplements or change prescribed medication without veterinary direction.

Prognosis
The outlook depends on the cause and, when carcinoma is involved, factors such as tumor size, local invasion, detectable metastasis, and treatment options. Merck Veterinary Manual describes the long-term prognosis for canine hyperthyroidism associated with thyroid carcinoma as poor to grave. This is a general reference statement, not a prediction for an individual dog; ask your veterinarian to explain what the findings mean for your pet.
When should I contact a veterinarian?
Arrange an assessment for the signs described above, especially a new or growing neck mass or signs of systemic illness. Seek urgent veterinary help if your dog has serious breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. If you suspect your dog has taken too much thyroid medication, contact a veterinarian promptly and provide the product and dose information.

Can dogs get hyperthyroidism?
Yes, but it is uncommon. Spontaneous cases are most often associated with thyroid carcinoma; excess levothyroxine and thyroid tissue in food are other described causes.

Does a high thyroid hormone result mean my dog has cancer?
No. Excess levothyroxine and eating food containing excessive thyroid tissue can also cause excess thyroid hormone. A veterinarian must interpret the result alongside the dog’s history and examination.
Can I treat my dog with a thyroid supplement?
No. Do not use an over-the-counter product to treat suspected hyperthyroidism. Have a veterinarian assess the cause and recommend care.
Can antithyroid medication cure thyroid cancer?
Antithyroid medication may control hormone-related signs, but it does not prevent tumor growth or metastasis. Ask your veterinarian about tumor-directed options for your dog’s case.
What is the treatment for hyperthyroidism in dogs?
Treatment depends on the cause. Options for thyroid tumors can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and radioiodine; antithyroid medication may control the hyperthyroid state but does not treat tumor growth. A veterinarian can explain which approaches are suitable based on tumor size, invasion, metastasis, and availability.
