Alba was an albino rabbit associated with artist Eduardo Kac’s GFP Bunny project. The reported green fluorescence depended on suitable external illumination, so “glow-in-the-dark rabbit” is shorthand: Alba did not glow on her own in ordinary darkness.

What does “glow-in-the-dark rabbit” mean?

The phrase usually refers to a rabbit associated with green fluorescent protein (GFP), a protein Kac describes as originating from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. GFP absorbs light at one wavelength and emits light at a longer wavelength. Kac’s account gives maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of 488 nm and 509 nm, respectively; these are figures from his account of the project.

That process is fluorescence, not the persistent glow of a phosphorescent toy. Alba was reported to appear white in daylight and green under ultraviolet light by contemporary reporting from Duke. Kac’s own account describes blue-light excitation. The accounts differ in how they describe the illumination, but both describe fluorescence under external light—not a rabbit shining in darkness.

Alba and Eduardo Kac’s GFP Bunny

The rabbit most people mean when they search for a “glowing rabbit” is Alba, associated with artist Eduardo Kac’s GFP Bunny. Kac described the artwork as encompassing the rabbit’s creation, public dialogue, and social integration. In his project account, he wrote: “My transgenic artwork ‘GFP Bunny’ comprises the creation of a green fluorescent rabbit, the public dialogue generated by the project, and the social integration of the rabbit.”

Kac named Louis Bec as producer and coordinator in France and Louis-Marie Houdebine as lead scientist. Contemporary Duke reporting described the laboratory’s refusal to release Alba to Kac, who had intended to take her home. An archived interview record also discusses the collaboration and release dispute. These sources document the public controversy, but do not settle every question about ownership or motive.

Kac’s chronology says the project’s first phase was completed in February 2000 and that the work was first presented publicly in Avignon. This is the artist’s project chronology; the available sources do not independently establish an exact birth date for Alba.

What did Alba look like under the light?

Contemporary Duke reporting described Alba as white in daylight and green under ultraviolet light. Kac’s account describes blue-light excitation. Those descriptions support the basic point that external illumination was involved, but the available sources do not establish every detail of how much of Alba’s body visibly fluoresced.

It is therefore best not to treat a widely circulated image as conclusive evidence of uniform fluorescence across Alba’s entire coat. The careful takeaway is that Alba was associated with a fluorescent-rabbit project and reported to fluoresce under suitable illumination; the project’s public representation and the dispute over Alba’s future were also central to its story.

What happened to Alba?

The sources in this research do not resolve Alba’s later history, age, or cause of death. Avoid stating a precise death date, medical cause, or age as established fact without a reliable source that settles those details.

Why was Alba controversial?

GFP Bunny raised questions about using a living, genetically modified animal in an artwork and about what should happen to that animal afterward. Kac’s account framed social integration as part of the project. Contemporary Duke reporting documented that the laboratory declined to release Alba to Kac, who had intended to take her home.

The dispute made the relationship between an artist, a research laboratory, and a living animal part of the public discussion. Kac’s project account and the contemporaneous reporting are useful records of how the work was described, but they do not independently settle every contested historical detail.

What can fluorescent rabbits tell us?

Fluorescent proteins can serve as visible labels in biological research, but the Alba story should not be mistaken for a guide to making or using a research animal. The sources reviewed here focus on the history and public discussion of GFP Bunny; they do not establish a comprehensive account of current research uses or protocols.

Can a pet rabbit glow in the dark?

No ordinary pet rabbit glows in darkness, and Alba’s reported fluorescence required suitable external illumination. The sources reviewed here describe a research and art project, not a commercially available glowing pet or a do-it-yourself procedure.

For more context on the project, Kac’s book Telepresence and Bio Art: Networking Humans, Rabbits, and Robots includes a chapter on GFP Bunny. It is further reading about bioart, not a scientific protocol or animal-care guide.

Glow-in-the-dark rabbit myths, corrected

Why the story still matters

GFP Bunny brought questions about biotechnology, art, and animal welfare into public discussion. Its story is not simply about a rabbit’s appearance under a light: Kac described public dialogue and social integration as parts of the work, and the dispute over Alba’s release became a prominent part of its reception.

The project invites questions about how living animals are represented, who makes decisions about their futures, and how institutions communicate about biotechnology. The historical sources document the project and controversy, while leaving some details unresolved.
