A sudden change is more concerning when it comes with abnormal color or swelling, cold injury, or changes in energy, appetite, breathing, movement, droppings, or egg production. Comb posture alone cannot diagnose illness.
Why a chicken’s comb may lean or flop
A comb may naturally lean or hang to one side; a hen’s comb can even hang over one eye. Compare the bird with its own usual appearance rather than assuming a particular angle is abnormal. A longstanding lean in a bird that otherwise seems well is different from a new or worsening change.
A changed comb may also occur alongside injury or illness, but the posture itself does not identify the cause. Check the comb and the whole bird, and consider the flock and its environment.
Does a floppy comb mean a hen is laying?
Not by itself. Comb posture is not a stand-alone way to determine whether a hen is laying or healthy. Consider the bird’s usual appearance and look for other changes in behavior, appetite, breathing, movement, droppings, and egg production.

When a fallen-over comb is probably normal
A leaning comb is less concerning when it is longstanding and the bird has normal energy and appetite, breathes and moves normally, and has no unusual color, swelling, or damaged tissue. Note the bird’s baseline appearance so you can recognize a meaningful change.
Take a photograph when the bird appears well and compare future changes with that image. Also observe flock-mates for similar signs.
When a drooping comb may signal a problem
Pay closer attention if the comb change is sudden or worsening, especially if it is accompanied by blackened tissue after cold exposure, purple discoloration, swelling, low energy, reduced appetite or egg production, breathing difficulty, stumbling, diarrhea, or unexpected deaths. These signs are warnings, not a diagnosis of a particular disease.

Combs, wattles, and toes are vulnerable to frostbite in cold, damp conditions. Affected tissue may look discolored and can become blackened; dead tissue may dry and fall away. Check for cold exposure as well as the bird’s overall condition.
If you suspect frostbite, consult a veterinarian, especially if infection may be present or the injury is significant. Warm affected tissue slowly; do not rub it or apply direct heat. Leave blackened areas in place unless infection develops, and monitor for signs of infection.

Keep the coop dry and ventilated
Managing moisture helps reduce frostbite risk. Keep bedding dry, address water spillage, and provide appropriate ventilation. Condensation on windows or uninsulated walls is a sign to increase ventilation.
A coop thermometer-hygrometer can help you observe temperature and humidity, but it cannot diagnose or treat a bird. Petroleum jelly is sometimes used to help insulate combs and wattles against frostbite; it does not treat an already frostbitten comb.
