Birding feels newly ubiquitous because several trends reinforce one another: many people enjoy watching birds, phone apps make unfamiliar sightings and calls easier to identify, and social platforms help newcomers find a community. The evidence supports substantial participation and growing digital tools, but it does not show that everyone is birding or prove how many people started because of social media.
For beginners, the good news is that you can start nearby with no special equipment. A free identification app can help you notice what is around you; binoculars and a printed field guide are optional ways to deepen the experience.
The “sudden” birding boom is partly a visibility effect
Birding was already a popular pastime before bird videos began appearing in social feeds. Audubon magazine reported in 2025 that more than one in three U.S. adults enjoy birding, summarizing the 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. That survey uses a defined measure of bird watching; it is not a count of bird-club members or people who identify as expert birders.
It is useful to separate broad participation from what appears on a feed. Someone can watch birds without posting about it, while an app user, a social-media viewer, and an eBird checklist each measure something different. The available sources do not quantify how many people became birders specifically because of social media.

Birding can be a quiet, everyday activity: noticing birds from a window, walking through a park, or listening on a neighborhood street. Today, a beginner can also identify a possible bird with a phone, share a sighting, and find other people interested in the same species.
When it feels as if everyone on your feed is suddenly birding, several things may be happening at once:
- People are finding birding through accessible outdoor activities and local walks.
- Identification apps make it easier to investigate a call or sighting.
- Social platforms make birders and their discoveries more visible.
- Online communities give beginners places to ask questions and share observations.
- Lists and local sightings offer reasons to return to the hobby.
That is a visibility shift as well as a reflection of genuine interest—not proof of a universal surge caused by one platform.
Merlin removed some of the expertise barrier
For many beginners, Merlin Bird ID is a useful starting point. The free app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology can suggest identifications using questions, photographs, or recorded sounds. Cornell describes how eBird observations help Merlin narrow likely identifications using factors such as time and location.
Before tools like Merlin, a beginner might have needed to compare a bird with a field guide or learn its identifying features before getting a useful lead. An app can help turn an unfamiliar song or a brief glimpse into a shortlist of possibilities.
Sound identification is especially helpful because birds may be hidden in leaves, flying overhead, or outside the camera frame. As Alli Smith, Merlin project coordinator, told the Associated Press in 2023, “Birding by sound opens up a whole new world.” The app can prompt a beginner to listen more closely, even when the bird is not visible.
Technology has helped make birding easier to enter, but it is not a replacement for observation. Treat an app result as a useful lead, especially when the identification is unusual or difficult. Compare visible features, behavior, habitat, and location; if accuracy matters, seek another observer’s confirmation.

- An ideal choice magnification: A 10x magnification strikes the balance between zooming in on your target and maintaining a steady image, making it an ideal choice for everyday use.
- Equipped with Bak-4 prisms: These prisms deliver images with 3D depth and rich detail. Even under low-light conditions, you’ll still enjoy bright, sharp views.
- Compact design: About the size of your palm and weighing only 0.6 pounds - makes it easy to carry around wherever you go. With these features, your binoculars become a reliable companion for everyday adventures rather than a tool reserved only for special occasions.
- Wide range IPD: With an adjustable interpupillary distance ranging from 60mm to 75mm, they comfortably fit both kids and most adults. This means everyone in the family can share the excitement of discovering new sights together.
- Your one-stop solution: these binoculars absolutely for bird watching, cruising, hiking, and traveling, but they’re not just for the outdoors—catch every thrilling moment at sporting events, concerts, plays, and more. What's more? Don’t forget the simple pleasures: Keep them handy in the car glove box, use them during a layover at the airport, or explore your own backyard. Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.
Merlin can create a simple learning loop:
- Notice a sound or bird you do not recognize.
- Use the app to explore possible identifications.
- Compare the suggestions with what you actually heard or saw.
- Look for the bird again on a later walk, or learn more about its call and behavior.
- Over time, build your own recognition skills alongside the app.
eBird gives observations a shared record
Merlin helps answer, “What might that be?” eBird offers a way to record bird observations in checklists. Those records can be used by researchers and conservation practitioners, so a careful observation may contribute to a larger shared resource.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In August 2025, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology reported that eBird had reached two billion bird sightings and three million sound recordings. Those are platform milestones, not a count of unique birders or proof that social media caused the hobby’s growth.
Some birders keep a life list, a year list, or a personal record of species they have seen. Others simply enjoy noticing birds without tracking them. Recording an observation is optional; when you do, accuracy matters more than making a list look impressive.
A list can give an outing a goal: look for a familiar species, learn one new call, or revisit a place at another time of day. The reward still comes from paying attention to a real place and the birds in it.
Social media changed what birding looks like
Recent reporting has highlighted young birders and creators on TikTok and Instagram. The Atlantic’s July 2026 feature describes young birders and influencers, while Associated Press reporting has described how bird-identification tools helped people notice and share birds. These are examples of a visible cultural shift, not representative evidence that every young person is birding or that social media alone caused participation to rise.
The hobby lends itself to sharing:
- Short videos: A bird’s movement, colors, or behavior can catch attention quickly.
- Audio: An unfamiliar call can make people curious even when the bird is hard to see.
- Questions: “What bird is this?” invites identification help and conversation.
- Local discoveries: A post about a nearby sighting can give others a reason to look more closely on their own walk.
- Ongoing learning: A new species or call can become part of a continuing personal story.
Online communities can also offer an entry point for people who do not already know an experienced birder. A beginner can watch someone explain an identification or ask for help with a sighting.
Visibility can bring responsibility, too. A viral sighting may draw a crowd. Give wildlife room, follow local rules, and avoid sharing sensitive locations when doing so could disturb birds or habitat.

The phone can be a route out of the feed
Birding can offer a reason to put the phone down without rejecting technology altogether. The phone may help you identify a sound, but the activity still asks you to look up, listen, and notice what is happening around you.
Associated Press coverage has described Merlin as a prompt to notice bird sounds that users might otherwise ignore. Some people find birding calming or restorative, but those descriptions are personal experiences, not evidence that birding treats a medical condition.
The appeal can be practical: a nearby walk becomes more interesting, and a phone can help a beginner explore what they see and hear without requiring a distant trip or expensive setup.
It is unusually easy to start
You can begin at a window, on a sidewalk, in a city park, from a balcony, or in a backyard. As Audubon’s beginner guide puts it, “Watching birds is free.” A phone app is optional; so are binoculars, a camera, a membership, and a specialized destination.
If you decide you want a closer view, binoculars are one possible addition. Compare price, carrying comfort, and the kind of viewing you expect to do. The sources reviewed for this article do not provide model-level testing, so no particular pair can be called best here. Borrowing or trying binoculars before buying may help you decide whether they suit you.
A printed field guide can complement an app or serve as an offline reference. Choose one that covers the birds of your region; a field guide is useful, but it is not a requirement for getting started.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a first outing, your eyes and ears are enough. If you later want to attract birds at home, feeding is optional; follow local guidance and keep any equipment clean. You do not need a feeder to enjoy birds.

Why younger audiences may be responding
The available evidence points to several possible influences, rather than one proven explanation for why younger people are interested. Reporting describes young birders and social-media creators, while Associated Press coverage discusses the role of newer identification tools and the pandemic period. These sources provide context and examples, not a representative causal survey.
| Possible influence | What it can offer |
|---|---|
| Accessible technology | Apps can help beginners investigate calls and sightings. |
| Outdoor appeal | A nearby walk or place to listen can make birding easy to try. |
| Sharing and community | Social posts and online groups can make other birders easier to find. |
| Personal goals | Lists and learning challenges can give an outing a focus, if that is enjoyable to the birder. |
| Learning about nature | Identifying local species can spark interest in birds and their habitats. |
These influences can reinforce one another: someone sees a post, tries an app, notices a bird nearby, and shares what they learned. That sequence helps explain the hobby’s visibility, but it does not establish a single cause or measure how many new birders followed it.
Birding can connect observation with conservation
Learning to identify birds can make people more curious about the places those birds live. eBird is one way to record observations in a shared resource used by researchers and conservation practitioners. Other community-science projects include FeederWatch, NestWatch, and the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Not every observation should be submitted as certain. Record what you genuinely observed, follow the project’s instructions, and leave an identification uncertain when the evidence is weak. Careful reporting is more useful than guessing.
For a beginner, the simple approach is to enjoy noticing birds first. If you want to contribute observations, learn the reporting rules of the project you choose and submit only what you can support.
A practical first birding outing
- Choose a familiar place. Try a yard, street, balcony, park, or pond where you can pause and listen.
- Listen before searching. Notice repeated calls, movement, and the direction of a sound.
- Use an app as a guide. If you try Merlin, compare its suggestions with what you actually heard or saw rather than forcing a match.
- Take notes if useful. A description, photograph, or short recording may help you check an identification later.
- Record sightings only if you want to. eBird is optional; if you submit a checklist, be accurate and follow its instructions.
- Return at another time. The same place can offer different birds and sounds on another visit.
- Share responsibly. Give birds room, follow site rules, and avoid directing a crowd toward sensitive wildlife.
Birding ethics matter when a sighting goes viral
A short responsible-birding checklist
- Do not chase, handle, or provoke birds for a photograph or video.
- Keep a respectful distance from nesting birds and follow posted rules.
- Avoid disturbing wildlife to get a better view or recording.
- Be cautious about sharing exact locations if doing so could put a bird or habitat at risk.
- When an identification is unusual, treat an app result as provisional and seek confirmation.
Sharing birding can help others discover the hobby. Patience and respect for wildlife help make that sharing responsible.
The simplest explanation
Birding can feel sudden because tools have made it easier to investigate what is nearby, while social platforms make people’s discoveries more visible. A beginner can hear a call, look for a possible identification, and find others who share the interest—all during an ordinary walk.

FAQ
Is birding actually a new trend?
No. Audubon magazine reported in 2025 that more than one in three U.S. adults enjoy birding, based on the 2022 federal recreation survey. Recent social-media visibility is not the same thing as a new or universal trend.
Do I need binoculars to start birding?
No. You can start by looking and listening in a nearby place. Binoculars are optional if you want a closer view, and you can compare options or try borrowing a pair before buying.
Can Merlin Bird ID be wrong?
Yes. Treat an app result as a useful suggestion, not a guaranteed identification. Compare it with what you observed and seek confirmation when a bird is unusual or difficult to identify.
Recommended Free Tools
Does recording birds on eBird help science?
eBird records are used by researchers and conservation practitioners, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. If you submit observations, follow the platform’s instructions and record only what you can support.
Did social media cause the birding boom?
The sources reviewed show that social platforms make birding more visible and that people share sightings online. They do not establish how many people started because of social media or prove it was the sole cause of increased interest.
Is birding good for mental health?
Some people describe birding as calming or restorative, but those are personal experiences, not evidence that birding treats a health condition.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Birding is easy to try, and apps and social sharing help explain why it appears more often in people’s feeds. Start with a local walk, use identification tools as aids rather than authorities, and add equipment only if it improves the experience.
