Tim Walz did not secretly replace Scout, according to the reviewed reporting. The viral comparison showed Walz petting a brown-and-white dog at a dog park, but the October 22, 2022 video from that outing showed Scout and the other dog together. The reporting says Walz did not claim the other dog was Scout.
What happened to Tim Walz’s dog Scout?
The claim spread on August 26, 2024, when social-media users compared images of Walz with dogs that looked different and suggested he had secretly replaced Scout. The images came from posts made months apart in 2022. The apparent contradiction left out the dog-park context: Scout was there with another dog that Walz petted.
The Minnesota governor’s office announced in 2019 that the Walz family had adopted Scout from Midwest Animal Rescue & Services over Labor Day weekend. In October 2022, Walz posted about a day at the dog park. Lead Stories’ fact-check reports that the video showed Scout and the brown-and-white dog at the same outing.
Still image versus full video
| Evidence | What it shows | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Still image of Walz with a brown-and-white dog | Walz was petting that dog. | That the dog belonged to Walz or that he identified it as Scout. |
| October 22, 2022 dog-park video | Scout and the other dog were at the same outing. | A secret replacement of Scout. |
The still image could be misread when separated from its setting. The longer video supplies the context that the comparison omitted. Lead Stories concluded that Walz was petting another dog at the park, not presenting it as Scout.

How to assess the claim
- Look for the original context. A still image may omit what was happening around it.
- Check for longer footage. In this case, the dog-park video showed both dogs at the same outing.
- Separate observation from inference. Seeing Walz pet a dog does not establish that it was his dog or that he called it Scout.
