The Yangtze finless porpoise is critically endangered because it lives in a heavily used river system where multiple pressures overlap, including fishing impacts and reduced prey, ship traffic, habitat degradation, and pollution. China’s 2022 survey found 1,249 porpoises, up from 1,012 in 2017, but that is not a current 2026 count and does not mean the species is safe.

The evidence does not establish one dominant cause of the decline. Conservation responses include fishing restrictions, protected-area management, habitat reconnection, and support for alternative livelihoods for fishers.

What the Yangtze finless porpoise is

The Yangtze finless porpoise is a freshwater cetacean confined to the Yangtze River system in China. It is identified in conservation literature as Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis. WWF identifies it as Critically Endangered.

It is a small toothed cetacean with a low ridge along its back rather than a prominent dorsal fin. Its habitat is shared with extensive human activity, and the health of its river system affects its access to prey and suitable habitat.

The porpoise’s conservation needs include protecting prey, habitat, and the waters it uses. Its decline is therefore also a warning about pressures on the broader Yangtze ecosystem.

How many Yangtze finless porpoises are left?

China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported that its 2022 scientific investigation found 1,249 Yangtze finless porpoises. The ministry said this was 23.42 percent higher than the 2017 estimate. This is the latest population estimate established by the research for this article; it should not be described as a 2026 count.

Survey period Reported population Source and context
2017 1,012 Chinese Academy of Sciences, as cited in its reserve article
2022 1,249 China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; reported as 23.42 percent above the 2017 estimate

These are survey estimates from different years, not annual counts. The increase is encouraging, but the available sources do not establish which conservation measure caused it or how the population has changed since the 2022 survey.

Why is the Yangtze finless porpoise endangered?

Several human pressures affect the same river system. The IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group says the primary drivers were not clear given the multiple harmful factors affecting the Yangtze ecosystem. The threats below are documented or identified as likely contributors; their relative impacts have not been resolved.

1. Fishing impacts and reduced prey

Fishing can affect porpoises directly through bycatch and other dangerous gear, and indirectly by reducing fish prey. The IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group identifies bycatch in legal and illegal fishing gears and loss of fish prey among likely contributors. Illegal or electro-fishing is also a concern.

Fishing restrictions and enforcement can address some of these pressures, but the population increase reported between 2017 and 2022 should not be attributed to one policy alone.

2. Habitat degradation and river development

Habitat degradation is among the pressures identified by the IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group. WWF also names dredging and sand mining as threats. These activities can alter river habitat used by porpoises and their prey.

Protecting habitat means managing development and maintaining suitable river and lake areas, not only protecting individual animals.

3. Floodplain lakes and habitat connections

Connections between floodplain lakes and the Yangtze main stem can support seasonal flows and movement by aquatic species. WWF reports that it and partners have reconnected more than 40 floodplain lakes to the main stem since 2002.

Lake reconnection is one documented habitat measure. It should be considered alongside fishing restrictions, reserve management, and other actions addressing pressures on the river.

4. Ships, boat strikes, and collisions

Shipping and boat strikes are among the threats identified by WWF, and the IUCN specialist group lists ship collisions as a likely contributor. Heavy vessel use can expose porpoises to collision risks in a working river system.

The International Whaling Commission recommends identifying river and lake segments with high porpoise concentrations and maintaining year-round protection in those areas.

5. Pollution

The IUCN SSC Cetacean Specialist Group lists pollutants among the likely contributors to the porpoise’s decline. Pollution is one part of a broader threat profile; the available evidence does not establish a single pollutant as the dominant cause.

6. Accidental deaths and destructive fishing methods

Bycatch in fishing gear and illegal or electro-fishing can harm porpoises. The International Whaling Commission recommends vigorous enforcement against electro-fishing and other dangerous fishing activities.

Enforcement can reduce direct risks to porpoises while supporting protection of fish and the wider aquatic ecosystem.

What the recent population increase tells us

China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported 1,249 porpoises in its 2022 scientific investigation, compared with 1,012 in 2017. The Chinese Academy of Sciences also reported that the population in specified reaches and lakes had halted its decline and was slowly recovering.

China’s government attributed the increase in part to the ten-year fishing ban in key Yangtze waters. That is the government’s explanation, not proof that the ban alone caused the increase. The sources reviewed do not apportion the change among fishing restrictions, reserve management, habitat work, or other factors.

The careful conclusion is that the reported population estimate rose between 2017 and 2022, while the species remains Critically Endangered and its current population after 2022 is not established by this research.

What conservation programs are doing

Fishing restrictions and enforcement

China’s ten-year fishing ban in key Yangtze waters began in 2021. WWF also describes a full fishing ban in 332 Yangtze basin conservation areas beginning in January 2020. These are distinct policy descriptions and dates, not a single measure with one start date.

Fishing restrictions can reduce pressure on fish and limit dangerous fishing interactions. The International Whaling Commission recommends year-round protection and enforcement against electro-fishing in river and lake segments with high porpoise concentrations.

Protected-area management

The Chinese Academy of Sciences describes ten reserves established for the species across Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, and Jiangsu. Reserve establishment, management, and monitoring are part of the conservation response.

Reconnecting lakes and supporting fishing communities

WWF reports that it and partners have reconnected more than 40 floodplain lakes to the Yangtze main stem since 2002 to restore seasonal flows and enable species movement. WWF also describes helping fishers develop alternative livelihoods intended to reduce overfishing while involving communities in porpoise protection.

These measures address different parts of the problem. The available research does not provide comparable cost-effectiveness estimates, so it cannot support ranking them by return on investment.

What you can do to help

Readers can support documented habitat and species conservation work, while being careful not to assume that every wildlife product or donation funds a specific outcome.

1. Support conservation work with clear goals

Look for reputable organizations that explain how they protect Yangtze habitat, reconnect floodplain lakes, support wildlife protection, or work with fishing communities. WWF describes lake-reconnection and alternative-livelihood work. Before donating, check the current campaign page and what it says the contribution supports.

2. Encourage habitat protection and fishing enforcement

Support conservation measures that protect important river and lake areas and enforce restrictions on destructive fishing. The International Whaling Commission recommends year-round protection in high-concentration areas and enforcement against electro-fishing and other dangerous activities.

3. Treat products as products unless conservation funding is documented

WWF’s adoption page offers a porpoise plush as part of its adoption materials. This research did not verify a matching retail listing or establish that a generic plush purchase supports conservation. Only describe a purchase as a donation or conservation contribution when the organization or seller clearly documents that connection.

4. Share accurate, dated population information

When sharing a population figure, name its survey year and source: China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported 1,249 in 2022, compared with 1,012 in 2017 as cited by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Do not present the 2022 estimate as a live count for 2026.

Why saving the porpoise means caring for the Yangtze

The Yangtze finless porpoise faces overlapping pressures from fishing, prey loss, habitat degradation, shipping, collisions, and pollution. No single dominant cause is established in the available evidence, so lasting conservation requires a combination of habitat protection, fishing restrictions and enforcement, reserve management, and work with fishing communities.

The population estimate rose from 1,012 in 2017 to 1,249 in 2022, but that measured increase does not establish the species’ current population or resolve the threats it faces. Protecting the porpoise means continuing evidence-based work across the river system it depends on.
