How large are tuna fish? It depends on the species: NOAA Fisheries says Atlantic skipjack reach around 3 feet and 40 pounds, while western Atlantic bluefin can reach 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. These are reported upper-end figures, not typical sizes, and the available figures do not form a uniformly measured global comparison.
Tuna size comparison
| Species and region | Reported upper-end size | Common size or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Skipjack, Atlantic | Around 3 feet and 40 pounds | NOAA’s Western Atlantic guide lists a 40-inch maximum and a common length of 16–28 inches. |
| Albacore, North Atlantic | More than 4 feet and 88 pounds | NOAA’s Western Atlantic guide lists a 50-inch maximum and a common length of 16–43 inches. |

| Yellowfin, Atlantic | Up to 400 pounds | NOAA’s Western Atlantic guide lists an 80-inch maximum and a common length of 16–67 inches. |
| Bluefin, western Atlantic | Up to 13 feet and 2,000 pounds | The largest tuna in this comparison; this is a reported maximum, not a typical size. |
NOAA Fisheries’ species profiles and identification guide provide these figures. Regional profiles and guide figures use different contexts and measurement conventions, so treat the table as an accessible comparison, not a standardized biological dataset. The guide’s common-size ranges are lengths, not weights.

Yellowfin tuna
NOAA Fisheries’ Atlantic yellowfin profile gives an upper weight of 400 pounds. Its Western Atlantic guide lists a maximum length of 80 inches and a common length range of 16–67 inches. Why do reported tuna sizes vary?
Size figures can describe different things: a species profile’s reported upper size, a guide’s maximum length, a common length range, or a fishing record. These are not interchangeable. The reviewed NOAA material does not provide one standardized typical length and weight for every species in the comparison.
Region and measurement method matter, too. Several of the figures above are explicitly for Atlantic, western Atlantic, or North Atlantic populations. Do not treat them as global maximums or combine them as if they came from one survey.

How is a tuna’s length measured?
NOAA’s Western Atlantic fish identification guide describes curved fork length, measured along the body contour from the upper jaw to the fork of the tail. It also uses total curved fork length for size classes of whole Atlantic tunas. Curved fork length should not automatically be equated with a straight-line measurement.
